CPT resonances in two frequency pumping and probe beam configuration

Abstract

We have detected and analyzed narrow, high contrast coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances, which appear in transmission of the probe monochromatic light beam under action of the counter propagating two frequency laser radiation, on example of the nonclosed three level A-system formed by spectral components of the Doppler broadened D2line of cesium atoms. Given resonances may be used in atomic frequency standards, sensitive magnetometers and in ultrahigh resolution laser spectroscopy of atoms and molecules.

Thus CPT resonances, detected by the elaborated method, may be used in atomic frequency standards and sensitive magnetometers (based on the CPT phenomenon) and also in ultahigh resolution spectroscopy of atoms and molecules.

High contrast resonances of the coherent population trapping on sublevels of the ground atomic term

We have detected and analyzed narrow, high contrast coherent population trapping resonances, which appear in transmission of the probe monochromatic light beam under action of the counterpropagating two-frequency laser radiation, on example of the nonclosed three level Λ-system formed by spectral components of the Doppler broadened D2 line of cesium atoms (in the cell with the rarefied Cs vapor). These nontrivial resonances are determined directly by the trapped atomic population on the definite lower level of the Λ-system and may be used in atomic frequency standards, sensitive magnetometers and in ultrahigh resolution laser spectroscopy of atoms and molecules.

Effect of the coherent population trapping on saturated absorption resonances in Cs vapor

We have detected and analysed interesting features of sub-Doppler resonances, which are induced in absorption of the weak monochromatic probe light beam (with the scanned frequency) by the counterpropagating two-frequency pumping radiation implementing the phenomenon of the coherent population trapping (CPT) on resonant Λ-systems of atomic levels. Our experimental investigations have been carried out on example of spectral components of the Doppler broadened D2line of cesium atoms. Obtained results may be used for optimization of laser frequencies stabilization on atomic transitions.

The pecularities of coherent population trapping resonances on fine structure levels for different light polarization

At the conditions of two-photon resonance the effect of coherent population trapping (CPT) can take place. The CPT may be observed as in absorption so in resonance fluorescence. The CPT is widely applied in high resolution spectroscopy, laser cooling, atomic optics and so on. Earlier the peculiarities of CPT resonances on fine structure levels of an atom have been considered on example of thallium atoms. It was shown that the form and number of resonances are influenced by geometry of experiment and initial conditions (initial level populations). As the investigations of CPT on fine structure levels are the object of interest last years, we have considered the numerical analysis of dependence the form of CPT resonances on fine structure levels of T1 atoms as lower levels of Λ-system on polarization of radiation fields. The cases of elliptical, linear and circular polarization have been considered.

Tunable dual-frequency laser source for coherent population trapping cesium atomic clocks

Coherent population trapping (CPT) has been demonstrated as an interesting technique for miniature atomic frequency references [1,2] and quantum information. It is based on the coupling of the two hyperfine ground states of an alkali atom – namely cesium (133Cs) for atomic clocks – through excitation to a common atomic level by two phase-coherent laser fields nearly resonant with the atomic transitions. The frequency difference between the two laser fields is tuned at the atomic frequency splitting in the microwave range, equal to 9.192 GHz for 133Cs atoms. Outputs powers in the mW range and narrow-linewidth emission (<500 kHz) are required for the two laser beams.
