All-optical power-controlled switching in four-wave mixing

Abstract

The use of four-wave mixing as an all-optical switching device is described. The switching process involves strong pump depletion and results from large-signal interactions. Interesting relationships among the input, the optical control, and the output signals and the parameters of the nonlinear medium are identified.

All-optical switching via four-wave mixing Bragg scattering in a silicon platform

Yun Zhao, David Lombardo, Jay Mathews +1 more

We employ the process of non-degenerate four-wave mixing Bragg scattering to demonstrate all-optical control in a silicon platform. In our configuration, a strong, non-information-carrying pump is mixed with a weak control pump and an input signal in a silicon-on-insulator waveguide. Through the optical nonlinearity of this highly confining waveguide, the weak pump controls the wavelength conversion process from the signal to an idler, leading to a controlled depletion of the signal. The strong pump, on the other hand, plays the role of a constant bias. In this work, we show experimentally that it is possible to implement this low-power switching technique as a first step towards universal optical logic gates, and test the performance with random binary data. Even at very low powers, where the signal and control pump levels are almost equal, the eye-diagrams remain open, indicating a successful operation of the logic gates.

LARGE-SIGNAL RESULTS FOR DEGENERATE FOUR-WAVE MIXING AND PHASE CONJUGATE RESONATORS

Prc Zheu, Usa Visiting

A calculation procedure and various large-signal and numerical solutions are presented for degenerate four-wave mixing in optical Kerr media, and for phase conjugate resonators using degenerate four-wave mixing. The solutions presented take full account of nonlinear refractive index changes, pump depletion, signal saturation, distributed losses, and possible external mirrors with laser gain. We find that including the nonlinear index change generally causes little change in the reflectivity or power output of degenerate four-wave mixing devices, at least with symmetric pumping. The optimum power output from a phase conjugate resonator with and without a laser gain medium is calculated. The results provide some theoretical guidance for designing phase conjugate resonators. Novel all-optical switching mechanisms in media with quadratic nonlinearity

Vladislav A. Dubikovskiy, Andrey E. Kobyakov, David J. Hagan

A study is carried out to demonstrate that even a weak nonlinear coupling into additional waves can substantially change the system's behavior. A generic analytical approach toward multiple wave mixing in quadratic media is developed and novel mechanisms of all-optical modulation are identified.

Analysis Of Degenerate Four-Wave Mixing At Large Pump Signals

Michel Piché, Claude Paré, Pierre‐André Bélanger

The exact theory of degenerate four-wave mixing in a Kerr-like medium in the Bragg scattering regime is used to study the reflectivity of phase-conjugate mirrors pumped by intense laser beams. The analysis takes into account pump depletion, nonlinear phase modulation and the relaxation time of the nonlinearity. The steady-state response exhibits multivalued reflectivity, hysteresis and potential bistability; however, the transient response shows that at most one value of the phase-conjugate reflectivity is stable. Periodic or chaotic pulsations are predicted beyond threshold values of pump intensity. The onset of a natural oscillation in the Kerr-like medium is also predicted in the absence of a continuous probe beam; the resulting field amplitude is stable and weakly sensitive upon the presence of external noise.
