Quantum squeezing of slow-light solitons

Jinzhong Zhu, Qi Zhang, Guoxiang Huang

We investigate the quantum squeezing of slow-light solitons generated in a $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$-shaped three-level atomic system working under condition of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Starting from the Heisenberg-Langevin and Maxwell equations governing the quantum dynamics of atoms and probe laser field, we derive a quantum nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation controlling the evolution of the probe-field envelope. By using a direct perturbation approach to diagonalize the effective Hamiltonian (where the atomic variables have been eliminated), we carry out a detailed calculation on the quantum fluctuations of a slow-light soliton, expanded as a superposition of the complete and orthonormalized set of eigenfunctions obtained by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations describing the quantum fluctuations. We show that due to the giant Kerr nonlinearity contributed from the EIT effect, significant quantum squeezing of the slow-light soliton can be realized within a short propagation distance. The results reported here are helpful for understanding the quantum property of slow-light solitons and for realizing light squeezing via EIT in cold atomic gases experimentally.

Role of nonlinear refraction in the generation of terahertz field pulses by light fields

Alexander A. Zabolotskii

The generation of microwave (terahertz) pulses without any envelope in a four-level quasi-resonant medium is considered. Two intense quasi-monochromatic laser fields lead to a partial upper-level population. Microwave field pulses cause the transition between these levels. For appropriately chosen scales, the evolution of the fields is shown to be described by the pseudo-spin evolution equations in a microwave field with the inclusion of nonlinear refraction caused by an adiabatic upper-level population. The evolution of terahertz field pulses is described outside the scope of the slow-envelope approximation. When a number of standard approximations are taken into account, this system of equations is shown to be equivalent to an integrable version of the generalized reduced Maxwell-Bloch equations or to the generalized three-wave mixing equations. The soliton solution found by the inverse scattering transform method is used as an example to show that nonlinear refraction leads to a strong compression of the microwave (terahertz) field soliton.

Slow vector optical solitons in a cold five-level hyper V-type atomic system

Liu-Gang Si, Wen‐Xing Yang, Ji-Bing Liu +2 more

A new scheme of five-level hyper V-type atomic system is proposed with the aim of generating slow temporal vector optical solitons. Two transitions in the five-level atomic medium independently interact with the two orthogonally polarized components of a low intensity linear-polarized pulsed probe field, while two other transitions are driven by control laser fields. We demonstrate that various distortion-free slow temporal vector optical solitons, such as bright-bright, bright-dark, dark-bright and dark-dark vector solitons, can be evolved from the probe field. Besides, we also show that the modified Hubbard model that includes the Manakov system may be realized by adjusting the corresponding self- (cross-) phase modulation and dispersion effects of this system.
