Abstract

We investigate the quantum squeezing of slow-light solitons generated in a $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$-shaped three-level atomic system working under condition of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Starting from the Heisenberg-Langevin and Maxwell equations governing the quantum dynamics of atoms and probe laser field, we derive a quantum nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation controlling the evolution of the probe-field envelope. By using a direct perturbation approach to diagonalize the effective Hamiltonian (where the atomic variables have been eliminated), we carry out a detailed calculation on the quantum fluctuations of a slow-light soliton, expanded as a superposition of the complete and orthonormalized set of eigenfunctions obtained by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations describing the quantum fluctuations. We show that due to the giant Kerr nonlinearity contributed from the EIT effect, significant quantum squeezing of the slow-light soliton can be realized within a short propagation distance. The results reported here are helpful for understanding the quantum property of slow-light solitons and for realizing light squeezing via EIT in cold atomic gases experimentally.

Quantum squeezing of slow-light dark solitons via electromagnetically induced transparency

Jinzhong Zhu, Guoxiang Huang

We consider the quantum effect of slow-light dark soliton (SLDS) in a cold atomic gas with defocusing Kerr nonlinearity via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We calculate the quantum fluctuations of the SLDS by solving the relevant non-Hermitian eigenvalue problem describing the quantum fluctuations and find that only one zero mode is allowed. This is different from the quantum fluctuations of bright solitons, where two independent zero modes occur. We rigorously prove that the eigenmodes, which consist of continuous modes and the zero mode, are biorthogonal and constitute a complete biorthonormalized basis, useful for the calculation on the quantum fluctuations of the SLDS. We demonstrate that, due to the large Kerr nonlinearity contributed from the EIT effect, a significant quantum squeezing of the SLDS can be realized; the squeezing efficiency can be manipulated by the Kerr nonlinearity and the soliton's amplitude, which can be much higher than that of bright solitons. Our work contributes to efforts for developing quantum nonlinear optics and non-Hermitian physics and for possible applications in quantum information processing and precision measurements.

Phase-controlled optical switching and slow- and weak-light solitons in a coherent molecular system with permanent dipole moments

Qiong Du, Chao Hang, Guoxiang Huang

We investigate the linear and nonlinear light pulse propagations in a three-level Λ-type molecular system with permanent dipole moments via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We find that EIT characters in such a system depend strongly on the phase of control field, based on which a phase-controlled optical switch can be designed. We show that the Kerr nonlinearity of the system can be largely enhanced due to the control-field-induced quantum interference effect. We derive a nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the evolution of the probe-field envelope and demonstrate that it is possible to generate stable slow- and weak-light solitons in the system.

Quantum Squeezing of Matter-Wave Solitons in Bose-Einstein Condensates

Jinzhong 锦忠 Zhu 朱, Guoxiang Huang

We investigate the quantum squeezing of matter-wave solitons in atomic Bose–Einstein condensates. By calculating quantum fluctuations of the solitons via solving the Bogoliubov–de Gennes equations, we show that significant quantum squeezing can be realized for both bright and dark solitons. We also show that the squeezing efficiency of the solitons can be enhanced and manipulated by atom–atom interaction and soliton blackness. The results reported here are beneficial not only for understanding quantum property of matter-wave solitons, but also for promising applications of Bose-condensed quantum gases.

Stable weak-light ultraslow spatiotemporal solitons via atomic coherence

Hui‐jun Li, Yuan-po Wu, Guoxiang Huang

We propose a scheme to generate stable ultraslow three-dimensional spatiotemporal optical solitons, or ultraslow optical bullets, at very low light levels via atomic coherence. The system we consider is an ensemble of resonant, lifetime-broadened $N$-type four-level atoms, working in a regime of electromagnetically induced transparency. Due to the quantum interference effect induced by a control field, the absorption of a probe field is largely suppressed. Moreover, the Kerr nonlinearity is greatly enhanced, and the dispersion property of the probe field is drastically changed. Using a method of multiple scales, we derive two coupled nonlinear envelope equations controlling the evolution of the envelopes of the probe field and an assisted field. We show that under certain conditions the envelope of the probe field satisfies a three-dimensional nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation and the envelope of the assisted field obeys a linear Helmholtz equation. We obtain various optical bullet solutions for the probe-field envelope and demonstrate that such optical bullets have many novel features, including very slow propagating velocity and very low generation power. In addition, they can be actively controlled and manipulated by adjusting system parameters. The stabilization of the optical bullets obtained can be easily realized by the trapping potential contributed by the assisted field, which is also investigated in detail.

Electromagnetically induced transparency and nonlinear pulse propagation in a combined tripod and Λ atom-light coupling scheme

Hamid Reza Hamedi, J Ruseckas, Gediminas Juzeliūnas

Abstract We consider propagation of a probe pulse in an atomic medium characterized by a combined tripod and Lambda (Λ) atom-light coupling scheme. The scheme involves three atomic ground states coupled to two excited states by five light fields. It is demonstrated that dark states can be formed for such an atom-light coupling. This is essential for formation of the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and slow light. In the limiting cases the scheme reduces to conventional Λ- or N -type atom-light couplings providing the EIT or absorption, respectively. Thus, the atomic system can experience a transition from the EIT to the absorption by changing the amplitudes or phases of control lasers. Subsequently the scheme is employed to analyze the nonlinear pulse propagation using the coupled Maxwell–Bloch equations. It is shown that a generation of stable slow light optical solitons is possible in such a five-level combined tripod and Λ atomic system.

Ultraslow optical solitons and their storage and retrieval in an ultracold ladder-type atomic system

Yang Chen, Zhengyang Bai, Guoxiang Huang

We propose a scheme to obtain stable nonlinear optical pulses and realize their storage and retrieval in an ultracold ladder-type three-level atomic gas via electromagnetically induced transparency. Based on Maxwell-Bloch equations we derive a nonlinear equation governing the evolution of probe field envelope, and show that optical solitons with ultraslow propagating velocity and extremely low generation power can be created in the system. Furthermore, we demonstrate that such ultraslow optical solitons can be stored and retrieved by switching off and on a control field. Due to the balance between dispersion and nonlinearity, the ultraslow optical solitons are robust during propagation, and hence their storage and retrieval are more desirable than that of linear optical pulses. This raises the possibility of realizing the storage and retrieval of light and quantum information by using solitonic pulses.
