Abstract

We report on the detection of picosecond pulsed squeezed light generated by an optical parametric amplification in a periodically poled MgO:LiNbO(3) waveguide. By using a temporally shaped local oscillator in a balanced homodyne detection, we obverved the squeezing of -5.0 dB below the shot noise level. The squeezing level at the exit of the waveguide was estimated to be -9.7±0.8 dB.

Temporal Characteristics of Pulsed Squeezing in a Nonlinear Optical Waveguide

We experimentally investigate the temporal characteristics of picosecond squeezed pulses generated via an optical parametric amplification in a periodically poled MgO:LiNbO3 waveguide. The noise variances for the various time delays between the squeezed pulse and a local oscillator are measured using a balanced homodyne detector. The measured delay dependence is asymmetric, and this asymmetry indicates that the phase chirping of the squeezed pulse is different from that of the local oscillator pulse. We show that the observed squeezing can be improved by using the pulse shaping of the local oscillator.

Observation of quadrature squeezing in a ?^(2) nonlinear waveguide using a temporally shaped local oscillator pulse

We report on the generation of quadrature squeezed light at 1.535 microm via single-pass optical parametric amplification in a periodically poled MgO:LiNbO(3) waveguide, and detection with a temporally shaped local oscillator. Squeezing of -4.1 dB was directly measured using the shaped local oscillator. Classical parametric gain of the shaped pulse was also investigated; a deamplification gain of -12.1 dB was observed with the amplification gain of only +13.8 dB. We experimentally show that the use of shaped pulse as local oscillator in homodyne detection allows us efficient squeezing detection with near-unit mode-matching efficiency.

Observation of squeezed light at 1535 μm using a pulsed homodyne detector

Squeezed light was generated at a telecommunication wavelength via single-pass optical parametric amplification in a periodically poled MgO-doped LiNbO(3) waveguide. Classical parametric deamplification of -8.9 dB was achieved. This large magnitude of deamplification indicates that the problem of gain-induced diffraction was avoided by employing the waveguide. Squeezing of 3.2 dB was directly observed using a time-domain pulsed homodyne detector.

Pulsed Homodyne Detection of Squeezed Light at Telecommunication Wavelength

We present the generation of pulsed squeezed light at telecommunication wavelength of 1.535 µm via single-pass parametric amplification in a periodically poled MgO-doped lithium niobate waveguide using a novel collinear configuration. The quadrature-amplitude of squeezed light is measured in time domain. The classical parametric deamplification of -3.2 dB and quadrature squeezing of -1.5 dB are observed. The maximum classical parametric amplification of 19.3 dB is obtained at pump average power of 0.47 mW, taking advantage of the tight confinement in a waveguide and high peak power of the pulsed light.

Parametric amplification and squeezing of a mode-locked pulse train: A comparison of MgO:LiNbO3 with bulk periodically poled LiNbO3

E. M. Daly, A. I. Ferguson

We report on an initial squeezing of 3.3 dB below the shot noise level, generated in bulk, quasi-phase-matched lithium niobate. This squeezing was generated by degenerate parametric amplification, at 1047 nm, of a mode-locked pulse train. We present a detailed comparison of the process performed in both the quasi-phase-matched material and in ${\mathrm{M}\mathrm{g}\mathrm{O}:\mathrm{L}\mathrm{i}\mathrm{N}\mathrm{b}\mathrm{O}}_{3},$ which was phase matched using conventional birefringent methods. The single-pass gain measured was 2.5 from ${\mathrm{M}\mathrm{g}\mathrm{O}:\mathrm{L}\mathrm{i}\mathrm{N}\mathrm{b}\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ and 3.9 from periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN), although the former was affected by photorefractive damage. We directly recorded $11%$ of noise reduction in the vacuum using the PPLN parametric amplifier, purely because the detection efficiency was so low in our experiment. The experimental data was fitted to a model which includes the initial squeezing level and the homodyne detector efficiency as free parameters. The observed squeezing agrees well with the a total detection efficiency of just $16%$ and an initial squeezing level of 3.3 dB (53%) in PPLN.
