A note on higher moments and spectral shape for a classical Heisenberg chain

Abstract

The relaxation function and the spectral shape are investigated theoretically for a classical Heisenberg magnetic chain. In order to reproduce the spectrum, moments of the spin correlation function are calculated rigorously up to the eighth order for the magnetic chain. Proper continuations are introduced in the continued fraction expansion of spin-pair correlation function.

Correlation functions in the XXO Heisenberg chain and their relations with spectral shapes

Filippo Colomo, Anatoli G. Izergin, V. Tognetti

The spectral shape of one-dimensional systems (describing for instance the behaviour of Frenkel excitons) is approached through the exactly solvable model of the XXO Heisenberg quantum spin chain in a transverse magnetic field. Some results for finite size chains concerning 2N-point correlators are presented in detail. In particular, the finite lattice, finite temperature 2-point correlators are explicitly worked out. Moreover, results in closed form are given for 2N-point correlators in the most general situation (finite lattice and thermodynamic limit, finite temperature, finite space and/or time separations). Their relations with frequency moments of the spectral shape are pointed out and the connection with moment expansion through continued fraction representation is given.

Energy fluctuations in a classical Heisenberg chain

Hans A. De Raedt, Jan Fivez, Bart De Raedt

The dynamic structure factor of the energy density fluctuations in the classical Heisenberg chain is studied theoretically. Using exact expressions for the first six frequency moments and the knowledge of the exact $T=0$ result, simple approximations are used to calculate the spectrum. We show rigorously that the time-dependent correlation function is different for ferro-and antiferromagnetic coupling if $T\ensuremath{\ne}0$.

Correlation functions in Heisenberg magnetic chains: Quantum effects at low temperatures

H.-J. Mikeska

A theoretical approach to the one-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg model at low temperatures is presented which uses rotationally invariant combinations of spin operators only and is thus adapted to treat correctly effects resulting from the absence of long-range order in these systems. Analytic expressions for space- and time-dependent spin correlation functions are given for small values of $\frac{T}{J{S}^{2}}$ and $\frac{1}{S}$. The results include an expression for the spin correlation function in the antiferromagnetic ground state and a discussion of changes in line shape, due to quantum effects, for short-wavelength magnons as observed in neutron scattering experiments.

Spin chains in a field: Crossover from quantum to classical behavior

John B. Parkinson, J. C. Bonner

Extensive numerical studies have been performed on Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains of spin (1/2) (up to N=20), spin 1 (N=14), spin (3/2) (N=10), and spin 2 (N=8). With use of the Lancz\"os technique, primarily, the two lowest-lying eigenvalues have been calculated for all values of wave vector q and all values of magnetization (${S}_{T}^{z}$) up to saturation for each chain. From a knowledge of the eigenvector corresponding to the lowest eigenstate for each ${S}_{T}^{z}$, the T=0 spin-pair correlation functions have also been calculated as a function of field. We find a most unusual quantum-classical crossover phenomenon. It shows up in greatest detail in the field-dependent dispersion spectra, but the consequences are consistently manifested in the behavior of the T=0 magnetization isotherms and in the correlations both in real space and the Fourier transforms in q space. The additional data relevant to behavior in a field have allowed us to extend previous numerical studies of Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains with higher spin whose purpose was to examine the validity of the Haldane conjecture. The Haldane conjecture implies that Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains with integer spin have a gap in their excitation spectrum whereas chains with half-integer spin do not. While no feature of our extended investigations is in conflict with the conjecture, unusual features associated apparently with very slow convergence make the outcome less than conclusive. It appears that calculations on significantly longer chains are required to observe with confidence the large-N asymptotic limiting behavior.
