All-optical bistable logic control based on coupled Tamm plasmons

Abstract

A method for realizing low-threshold all-optical bistable logic control is proposed based on Tamm plasmons (TPs), which are formed in an asymmetric dielectric Bragg reflector (DBR)-metal-DBR (ADMD) structure with a layer of Kerr medium embedded. The ADMD structure supports two TPs due to coupling of trapped modes at each metal-DBR interface, generating two dips in the structure's reflection spectrum. Thus, control (i.e., pump) and controlled (i.e., probe) light with wavelengths close to the two dips, respectively, can be imported. It is verified theoretically that, thanks to the enhanced Kerr nonlinearity related to excitation of high-quality TP, bistable switching at very low injection intensity can be initiated by strength or direction variation of the pump. Meanwhile, the probe changes correspondingly with the pump. Thus, all-optical bistable logic operation of the probe can be controlled by the pump.

Optical bistability in reflection from multilayer metal-dielectric structure with Kerr nonlinearity

Svitlana G. Ilchenko, Ruslan A. Lymarenko, V. B. Taranenko

Both static and dynamic characteristics of light reflected from a specially designed multilayer metal-dielectric structure with Kerr nonlinearity have been studied in this work. Various regimes of nonlinear reflection from the structure have been demonstrated, including bistable switching between low and high reflection states, which occurs at low intensity of the incident light due to a significant enhancement in the optical field in the nonlinear layer under conditions of total internal reflection. This nonlinear structure has been proposed to use as an optically controlled intracavity laser modulator.

Analytical model for optical bistability in nonlinear metal nano-antennae involving Kerr materials

Fei Zhou, Ye Liu, Zhi-Yuan Li +1 more

Optical bistability at nanoscale is a promising way to realize optical switching, a key component of integrated nanophotonic devices. In this work we present an analytical model for optical bistability in a metal nano-antenna involving Kerr nonlinear medium based on detailed analysis of the correlation between the incident and extinction light intensity under surface plasmon resonance (SPR). The model allows one to construct a clear picture on how the threshold, contrast, and other characteristics of optical bistability are influenced by the nonlinear coefficient, incident light intensity, local field enhancement factor, SPR peak width, and other physical parameters of the nano-antenna. It shows that the key towards low threshold power and high contrast optical bistability in the nanosystem is to reduce the SPR peak width. This can be achieved by reducing the absorption of metal materials or introducing gain media into nanosystems.

Low threshold optical bistability based on MoS2 in asymmetric Fabry-Perot cavity structure in visible light band

Songqing Tang, Mengjiao Ren, Zhiheng Li +2 more

This article theoretically proposes a multi-layer Fabry-Perot cavity structure based on nonlinear MoS2, whose cavity is composed of asymmetric photonic crystals. In this structure, we observed a low threshold optical bistability phenomenon on the order of a in the visible light band, which is caused by the large third-order nonlinear conductivity of the bilayer MoS2 and the Fabry-Perot cavity resonance. Research has found that when light is incident from two different directions in an asymmetric Fabry-Perot cavity, the optical bistability exhibits not exactly the same behavior. In addition, we further investigated and found that the optical bistability behavior in this simple multi-layer structure is closely related to parameters such as incident wavelength, Fabry-Perot cavity length, and refractive index of the photonic crystal dielectric. This work provides a new approach for the implementation of low threshold optical bistable devices in the visible light band, which is expected to be applied in nonlinear optical fields such as all optical switches and all optical logic devices.

Low-threshold bistable reflection assisted by oscillating wave interaction with Kerr nonlinear medium*

Yingcong Zhang, Wenjuan Cai, Xianping Wang +5 more

Owing to the enormously enhanced oscillating wave, a minute variation of the incident light intensity will give rise to a change in the dielectric constant of the Kerr nonlinear medium and lead to a bistable reflection with an ultra-low threshold intensity, which is closely related to the angle of incidence and the thickness of the Kerr nonlinear medium. The criterion for the existence of optical bistability is derived. Our bistability scheme is simple and not limited to the TM-polarization.

Enhanced optical bistability with film-coupled plasmonic nanocubes

Christos Argyropoulos, Cristian Ciracì, David R. Smith

Colloidally synthesized nanocubes strongly coupled to conducting films hold great promise for enhancing different nonlinear optical processes. They exhibit a robust and sensitive scattering response that can be easily controlled by their geometrical and material parameters. Strong local field enhancement is generated at the gap regions between the nanocubes and the metallic film. We show that strong optical bistability and all-optical switching behavior can be obtained by loading these nanogaps with Kerr nonlinear materials. Relatively low input intensities are required to obtain these nonlinear effects. The proposed design can lead to efficient, low-power, and ultrafast all-optical memories and scattering nanoswitches.

Ultrafast all-optical switching in nanoplasmonic waveguide with Kerr nonlinear resonator

Hua Lü, Xueming Liu, Leiran Wang +2 more

A novel ultrafast all-optical switching based on metal-insulator-metal nanoplasmonic waveguide with a Kerr nonlinear resonator is proposed and investigated numerically. With the finite-difference time-domain simulations, it is demonstrated that an obvious optical bistability of the signal light appears by varying the control-light intensity, and an excellent switching effect is achieved. This bistability originates from the intensity-dependent change induced in the dielectric constant of Kerr nonlinear material filled in the nanodisk resonator. It is found that the proposed all-optical switching exhibits femtosecond-scale feedback time.
