Abstract

We study the nonlinear dynamics of two-component Bose–Einstein condensates in one-dimensional periodic optical lattice potentials. The stationary state perturbation solutions of the coupled two-component nonlinear Schrödinger/Gross–Pitaevskii equations are constructed by using the direct perturbation method. Theoretical analysis revels that the perturbation solution is the chaotic one, which indicates the existence of chaos and chaotic region in parameter space. The corresponding numerical calculation results agree well with the analytical results. By applying the chaotic perturbation solution, we demonstrate the atomic spatial population and the energy distribution of the system are chaotic generally.

Using the direct perturbation technique,a general unstable chaotic solution was obtained of the Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in one-dimensional tilted optical lattice potential. The dynamical phase dia-gram of this system was studied.Theoretical analysis results and the corresponding numerical results showed the chaotic behavior of the system. It was found that Bose-Einstein condensate chaos could be controlled by chang-ing the wave length of the incident laser light or adjusting the system parameters.

Two-species Bose–Einstein condensate in an optical lattice: analytical approximate formulae

R. Cipolatti, Leonardo Villegas-Lelovsky, Ming-Chiang Chung +1 more

Abstract Employing a general variational method and perturbation theory, we derived explicit solutions for the description of one-dimensional two species Bose–Einstein condensates confined by a harmonic trap potential in an optical lattice. We consider the system of two coupled Gross–Pitaevskii equations (GPE) and derive explicit expressions for the chemical potentials and wavefunctions in terms of the atom–atom interaction parameters and laser intensity. We have compared our results with the numerical solutions of the GPE and performed a quantitative analysis for the both considered methods. We underline the importance of the obtained explicit solutions to characterize the density profile or degree of miscibility of the two components.

Spatial chaos of trapped Bose–Einstein condensate in one-dimensional weak optical lattice potential

Guishu Chong, Wenhua Hai, Qiongtao Xie

The spatially chaotic attractor in an elongated cloud of Bose-Einstein condensed atoms perturbed by a weak optical lattice potential is studied. The analytical insolvability and numerical incomputability of the atomic number density are revealed by a perturbed solution that illustrates the unpredictability of the deterministic chaos. Although this could lead the nonphysical explosion and unboundedness to the numerical solution, the theoretical analysis offers a criterion to avoid them. Moreover, the velocity field is investigated that exhibits the superfluid property of the chaotic system.

Chaotic Ratchet Effect for Bose–Einstein Condensed Atoms in 1D Optical Lattices

Jianshu Fang, Zhang Xiang-Ping

The chaotic ratchet effect for Bose–Einstein condensed atoms in an optical lattice is investigated. By using the direct perturbation method we obtain the chaotic solution of the condensed system. Theoretical analysis reveals that the transport of the condensed atoms in the ratchet potential is a chaotic one, and corresponding numerical results agree well with the theoretical results.

Coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations (CNLS) with an external elliptic function potential model a quasi one--dimensional interacting two-component Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a standing light wave. New families of stationary solutions of the CNLS with a periodic potential are presented and their stability studied by direct numerical simulations. Some of these solutions allow reduction to Manakov system. From a physical point of view these solutions can be interpreted as exact Bloch states at the edge of the Brillouin zone. Some of them are stable while others are found to be unstable against modulations of long wavelength. The solutions which are modulationally unstable are shown to lead to the formation of localized ground states of the coupled BEC system.
