An inducing construction of quantum codes from classical error correcting codes

Abstract

The aim of the present paper is to construct error correcting quantum codes from classical error correcting group codes by using the Schur orthogonality relations for characters of a finite abelian group and the Knill–Laflamme criterion for a quantum code to correct a pre-assigned family of errors. This is an abstraction and generalization of Shor's example of a nine qubit single error correcting quantum code.

Clifford Code Constructions of Operator Quantum Error-Correcting Codes

Andreas Klappenecker, Pradeep Kiran Sarvepalli

Recently, operator quantum error-correcting codes have been proposed to unify and generalize decoherence free subspaces, noiseless subsystems, and quantum error-correcting codes. This correspondence introduces a natural construction of such codes in terms of Clifford codes, an elegant generalization of stabilizer codes due to Knill. Character-theoretic methods are used to derive a simple method to construct operator quantum error-correcting codes from any classical additive code over a finite field, which obviates the need for self-orthogonal codes.

Constructing Quantum Error-Correcting Codes for pm-State System from Classical Error-Correcting Codes

Ryutaroh Matsumoto, Tomohiko Uyematsu

Quantum error-correcting codes have attracted much attention. Among many research articles, the most general and systematic construction is the so called stabilizer code construction [6] or additive code construction [2], which constructs a quantum error-correcting code as an eigenspace of an Abelian subgroup S of the error group. Thereafter Calderbank et al. [3] proposed a construction of S from an additive code over the finite field F4 with 4 elements. These constructions work for tensor products of 2-state quantum systems. However Knill [8], [9] and Rains [13] observed that the construction [2], [6] can be generalized to n-state systems by an appropriate choice of the error basis. Rains [13] also generalized the construction [3] using additive codes over F4 to p-state quantum systems, but his generalization does not relate the problem of quantum code construction to classical error-correcting codes. We propose a construction of quantum error-correcting codes for p-state systems from classical error-correcting codes which is a generalization of [3]. Throughout this paper, p denotes a prime number andm a positive integer. This paper is organized as follows. In Sect. 2, we review the construction of quantum codes for nonbinary systems. In Sect. 3, we propose a construction of quantum codes for p-state systems from classical codes over Fp2 . In Sect. 4, we propose a construction of quantum codes for p-state systems from classical linear codes over Fp2m . In Sect. 5, we discuss a

Quantum Error Transmutation

Daniel Zhang, Toby S. Cubitt

We introduce a generalisation of quantum error correction, relaxing the requirement that a code should identify and correct a set of physical errors on the Hilbert space of a quantum computer exactly, instead allowing recovery up to a pre-specified admissible set of errors on the code space. We call these quantum error transmuting codes. They are of particular interest for the simulation of noisy quantum systems, and for use in algorithms inherently robust to errors of a particular character. Necessary and sufficient algebraic conditions on the set of physical and admissible errors for error transmutation are derived, generalising the Knill-Laflamme quantum error correction conditions. We demonstrate how some existing codes, including fermionic encodings, have error transmuting properties to interesting classes of admissible errors. Additionally, we report on the existence of some new codes, including low-qubit and translation invariant examples.

Imprimitivity Systems and Quantum Codes

Kalyanapuram Rangachari Parthasarathy

It is shown how classical error correcting codes can be quantized to yield quantum error correcting codes as defined by E. Knill and R. Laflamme [2] by using the notion of an imprimitivity system for a group action in the sense of Frobenius and Mackey [4], [8].

Quantum Error Correction

Ping Dong, Jinsoo Kim

Abstract : We consider quantum error-correcting codes over alphabets of arbitrary size. We generalize quantum stabilizer codes and develop Calderbank-Shor-Steane construction over quantum systems of arbitrary dimensions using the group structure of alphabets. We also develop a methodology systematically conjoining error-correcting codes into a new class of error-correcting codes. With the help of these methods we give several ways to construct quantum maximum distance separable (MDS) codes and present many families of quantum MDS codes.

Clifford codes

Abstract Quantum error control codes allow to detect and correct errors that are due to decoherence effects. We review some basic properties of these codes and give some constructions. Our main focus will be on a construction of quantum error control codes that have been introduced by Knill in 1996 with the intention to generalize stabilizer codes. These so-called Clifford codes can be constructed and analyzed with tools from representation theory of finite groups. We show that a large class of Clifford codes are actually stabilizer codes. And we construct the smallest example of a Clifford code that is not a stabilizer code.
