Constructing Quantum Error-Correcting Codes for pm-State System from Classical Error-Correcting Codes

Abstract

Quantum error-correcting codes have attracted much attention. Among many research articles, the most general and systematic construction is the so called stabilizer code construction [6] or additive code construction [2], which constructs a quantum error-correcting code as an eigenspace of an Abelian subgroup S of the error group. Thereafter Calderbank et al. [3] proposed a construction of S from an additive code over the finite field F4 with 4 elements. These constructions work for tensor products of 2-state quantum systems. However Knill [8], [9] and Rains [13] observed that the construction [2], [6] can be generalized to n-state systems by an appropriate choice of the error basis. Rains [13] also generalized the construction [3] using additive codes over F4 to p-state quantum systems, but his generalization does not relate the problem of quantum code construction to classical error-correcting codes. We propose a construction of quantum error-correcting codes for p-state systems from classical error-correcting codes which is a generalization of [3]. Throughout this paper, p denotes a prime number andm a positive integer. This paper is organized as follows. In Sect. 2, we review the construction of quantum codes for nonbinary systems. In Sect. 3, we propose a construction of quantum codes for p-state systems from classical codes over Fp2 . In Sect. 4, we propose a construction of quantum codes for p-state systems from classical linear codes over Fp2m . In Sect. 5, we discuss a

We generalize the construction of quantum error-correcting codes from GF(4)-linear codes by Calderbank et al. to p^m-state systems. Then we show how to determine the error from a syndrome. Finally we discuss a systematic construction of quantum codes with efficient decoding algorithms.

Quantum error correcting codes: From stabilizer codes to induced codes

Edward A. Loeb

The first large class of quantum error-correcting codes that was constructed is the class of stabilizer codes. The construction method used for these codes is based on finding abelian subgroups of general Pauli groups. Stabilizer codes are a special case of a more general class of quantum error-correcting codes---Clifford codes. The construction technique for Clifford codes generalizes the stabilizer code construction by introducing abstract error groups. Abstract error groups generalize the Pauli groups so that codes can be constructed for quantum systems with any dimension. Clifford codes are thus constructed by finding normal subgroups of abstract error groups. In this dissertation we show that Clifford codes are a special case of a larger class of codes, which we refer to as induced codes. In addition to this new construction method, we also present some new results pertaining to a subclass of stabilizer codes called degenerate stabilizer codes.

Clifford Code Constructions of Operator Quantum Error-Correcting Codes

Andreas Klappenecker, Pradeep Kiran Sarvepalli

Recently, operator quantum error-correcting codes have been proposed to unify and generalize decoherence free subspaces, noiseless subsystems, and quantum error-correcting codes. This correspondence introduces a natural construction of such codes in terms of Clifford codes, an elegant generalization of stabilizer codes due to Knill. Character-theoretic methods are used to derive a simple method to construct operator quantum error-correcting codes from any classical additive code over a finite field, which obviates the need for self-orthogonal codes.

An inducing construction of quantum codes from classical error correcting codes

Kalyanapuram Rangachari Parthasarathy

The aim of the present paper is to construct error correcting quantum codes from classical error correcting group codes by using the Schur orthogonality relations for characters of a finite abelian group and the Knill–Laflamme criterion for a quantum code to correct a pre-assigned family of errors. This is an abstraction and generalization of Shor's example of a nine qubit single error correcting quantum code.

Nonbinary Stabilizer Codes Over Finite Fields

Avanti Ulhas Ketkar, Andreas Klappenecker, Santhosh Kumar +1 more

One formidable difficulty in quantum communication and computation is to protect information-carrying quantum states against undesired interactions with the environment. To address this difficulty, many good quantum error-correcting codes have been derived as binary stabilizer codes. Fault-tolerant quantum computation prompted the study of nonbinary quantum codes, but the theory of such codes is not as advanced as that of binary quantum codes. This paper describes the basic theory of stabilizer codes over finite fields. The relation between stabilizer codes and general quantum codes is clarified by introducing a Galois theory for these objects. A characterization of nonbinary stabilizer codes over$bf F_q$in terms of classical codes over$ bf F_q^2$is provided that generalizes the well-known notion of additive codes over$ bf F_4$of the binary case. This paper also derives lower and upper bounds on the minimum distance of stabilizer codes, gives several code constructions, and derives numerous families of stabilizer codes, including quantum Hamming codes, quadratic residue codes, quantum Melas codes, quantum Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghem (BCH) codes, and quantum character codes. The puncturing theory by Rains is generalized to additive codes that are not necessarily pure. Bounds on the maximal length of maximum distance separable stabilizer codes are given. A discussion of open problems concludes this paper.

Nonbinary Stabilizer Codes

Pradeep Kiran Sarvepalli, Salah A. Aly

Abstract Recently, the field of quantum error-correcting codes has rapidly emerged as an important discipline. As quantum information is extremely sensitive to noise, it seems unlikely that any large scale quantum computation is feasible without quantum error-correction. In this paper we give a brief exposition of the theory of quantum stabilizer codes. We review the stabilizer formalism of quantum codes, establish the connection between classical codes and stabilizer codes and the main methods for constructing quantum codes from classical codes. In addition to the expository part, we include new results that cannot be found elsewhere. Specifically, after reviewing some important bounds for quantum codes, we prove the nonexistence of pure perfect quantum stabilizer codes with minimum distance greater than 3. Finally, we illustrate the general methods of constructing quantum codes from classical codes by explicitly constructing two new families of quantum codes and conclude by showing how to construct new quantum codes by shortening.
