Influence of hole burning on laser pumping dynamics and efficiency in Yb:Er:phosphate glasses

Abstract

Measured population dynamics of erbium metastable level in a Yb:Er:phosphate glass following the excitation with a Nd:glass laser is reproduced by a theoretical model based on rate equations. To our knowledge, this is the first model to include frequency hole burning of inhomogeneously broadened pumping transition of ytterbium ion. The model explains also the previously observed dependence of pumping efficiency on Nd:glass laser pulse length.

Population dynamics in Yb:Er:phosphate glass under neodymium laser pumping

Boris Majaron, H. Lukac, M. Copic

Characteristics of ytterbium to erbium energy transfer in Yb:Er:phosphate glasses have been studied for a case when Nd phosphate glass laser is used as a pumping source. A theoretical model of the energy transfer was developed to reproduce the experimentally observed population dynamics of the Er/sup 3+/ upper and lower laser levels. The results show that saturation and frequency hole burning of the inhomogeneously broadened Yb/sup 3+/ absorption line are of primary importance in determining the dynamics and efficiency of the Yb/sup 3+/-Er/sup 3+/ energy transfer under Nd laser pumping. The influence of other loss channels that have been identified in previous studies is found to be relatively small. The model also yields the lifetime of the frequency hole, as well as the effective rates of energy transfer between groups of Yb/sup 3+/ and Er/sup 3+/ ions in phosphate glasses.>

Transient spectral hole burning in erbium-doped fluoride glasses

Laurent Bigot, Samuel Choblet, Anne-Marie Jurdyc +2 more

We report what is, to the best of our knowledge, the first observation of transient spectral hole burning in erbium-doped fluorozirconate glass around 1.53 μm. Holes deeper than 12% were burnt. A study of the hole width as a function of power density, wavelength, temperature, and erbium concentration has been performed and underlines the role of spectral diffusion. Dynamics of refilling of the holes, involving optical pumping of the long-lived 4I13/2 excited state, was also investigated. The nearly linear temperature dependence of the hole width behaves as reported for other rare-earth ions and is interpreted within the framework of the two-level systems theory. Hole-refilling dynamics has been studied for three different erbium concentrations and is used to interpret the origin of the saturation.

Stimulated emission from laser-pumped ytterbium- and erbium-activated glasses

E. I. Galant, Valery N Kalinin, Sergei G. Lunter +5 more

A calculation is reported of the energy parameters of stimulated emission of λ = 1.54 μ. radiation from glasses activated with Yb 3+ and Er 3+ ions and pumped with neodymium laser radiation. The calculation allows for the influence of the induced absorption at the pump wavelength and for the quenching of the excited levels of the Yb 3+ and Er 3+ ions. The kinetics and magnitude of the induced absorption are investigated for glasses of various compositions containing Yb 3+ and Er 3+ . The calculated values of the energy parameters are compared with the experimental results. Some features of the stimulated emission spectra of erbium-activated phosphate glasses are considered.

How the ytterbium concentration affects the population inversion of erbium in phosphate laser glasses

Vladimir A. Aseev, M. N. Zhukova, А. С. Златов +3 more

The population of the metastable level of erbium in ytterbium-erbium phosphate glasses has been measured as a function of the concentration of ytterbium ions and the power of the laser pumping. The ytterbium concentration was varied from 0 to a limiting value of 52.4×1020cm−3. It is established that increasing the concentration of ytterbium ions causes the population inversion of erbium to increase.

Some features of laser excitation of ytterbium-erbium glasses

Alexander G. Murzin, D. S. Prilezhaev, Victor A. Fromzel

An analysis is made of some processes that occur under conditions of accumulation of population inversion due to the 4 I 13/2 – 4 I 15/2 resonant transition in Er 3+ ions in ytterbium–erbium (Yb–Er) glasses of various compositions. Methods of measuring the parameters of direct and reverse excitation energy transfer between Er 3+ and Yb 3+ ions are also studied. It is found that, under certain conditions achieved in practice, appreciable bleaching of the medium should be observed at the frequency of the pump radiation, particularly under conditions of high-intensity reverse transfer of excitation energy from Er 3+ to Yb 3+ ions. This is typical of glasses having a low rate of intracenter relaxation of Er 3+ ions. It is also shown that nonsteady-state rate equations that assume a linear relationship between the rate of interionic transfer and the ground state population of the acceptor consistently describe the energy characteristics of the excitation processes of Yb–Er glasses. In this case, it is not necessary to introduce in the calculation model additional excitation losses that increase nonlinearly with the pump radiation.

Laser Hole Burning Spectroscopy: A High Resolution Probe of Molecular Environments.

R. M. Macfarlane, Robert M. Shelby

Laser induced hole burning in optical absorption bands of low temperature solids has been investigated with emphasis on mechanisms for population hole burning, the interactions with the environment which limit the hole widths and the use of hole burning for ultra high resolution spectroscopy. Hole burning was observed in a wide range of solids including organic and organometallic molecules in crystals and rare earth ions in crystals and glasses. The mechanisms for hole burning also varied widely and a new mechanism involving optically induced nuclear spin flips of near neighbor nuclei was discovered. Examples of hole burning in new classes of materials are presented here for the first time, namely inorganic glasses (silicate glasses containing Nd(3+), Pr(3+) or Eu(3+)) and undoped stoichiometric compounds (e.g., EuP5O14). Hole recovery was used to determine nuclear spin lattice relaxation rates in praseodymium doped crystals. For allowed optical transitions (e.g., singlet states of zinc porphyrin, dibromoindigo and color centers in alkali halides) the hole widths at 2K are limited by population decay to approximately 50 MHz. For longer lived optical levels in crystalline materials, e.g., those containing rare earth ions, the hole widths are narrower (less than 10 MHz) and are limited by dynamical interactions with surrounding nuclei. In amorphous materials such as europium doped silicate glass, hole widths are much broader, being limited by low frequency tunneling motions. Hole burning measurements were complemented by time domain coherent transient (photon echo, and optical free decay) measurements of homogeneous linewidths which enabled us to measure optical resonances as narrow as 760 Hz in Eu(3+):Y2O3.
