Abstract

It is shown that the complex quantum structure of nonclassical superposition states and strong atom-field entanglement are reflected in instability of resonance fluorescence driven by optical field being initially excited into the superposition of two phase shifted coherent states.

Resonance fluorescence of a two-level atom excited by a superposition of coherent states, and the instability of the average atomic dipole moment

S. Ya. Kilin, Vyacheslav Shatokhin

We find the evolution of average atomic variables in the resonance fluorescence of a two-level atom excited by a superposition of coherent states shifted in phase by π . A new effect is predicted, the quantum instability of the average atomic dipole moment, with a strong correlation between atom and field being the reason. We propose different ways of verifying the effect in experiments involving high- Q optical and microwave cavities.

Collective resonance fluorescence in an intense laser field with phase and amplitude fluctuations

A.S. Shumovsky, R. Tanaś, Tran Quang

The collective resonance fluorescence from a system of two-level atoms resonantly driven by a strong laser field with the phase and amplitude fluctuations is considered. The effect of the laser field fluctuations on the spectrum as well as the degrees of the second-order coherence of the fluorescent field is discussed in detail for the off-resonance case.

Atomic coherence effects in a three-level atom

W. Vogel, R. Blatt

A folded three-level system that is excited to resonance fluorescence with two monochromatic lasers exhibits a dark resonance. This phenomenon is usually interpreted as arising from a coherent superposition of two long-lived states1–3. To demonstrate directly such an atomic coherence, we propose intensity correlation measurements of the resonance fluorescence with a phase shift between the laser phases introduced after a certain delay time.
