Abstract

We theoretically studied a two cascaded stages of microring coupled-resonator optical waveguides with corresponding analytical model developed. Simulations show that multiple electromagnetically induced transparency-like spectra appear in this system, which can be ascribed to the combined effects of mode splittings and instructive interferences. Applications of such multiple electromagnetically induced transparency-like spectra are promising to be tailored for multi-channel delaying lines.

Coherent interference induced transparency in self-coupled optical waveguide-based resonators

Linjie Zhou, Tong Ye, Jianping Chen

We propose a self-coupled optical waveguide (SCOW)-based resonator to generate an optical resonance analogous to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The EIT-like effect is formed by the coherent interference between two resonance paths inherent to the SCOW resonator. For cascaded SCOW resonators, the spectrum they produce is significantly affected by the phase shift between them, with the EIT-like peak flattened or split as the two extreme cases. We also investigate the dispersion characteristics of an infinite array of SCOW resonators and show that the dispersion relation and group index in the EIT subband can be greatly changed by a small phase shift between the SCOW resonators.

Electromagnetically induced-transparency-like spectrum in an add/drop interferometer

Kaiyang Wang, Changqiu Yu, Xuenan Zhang +3 more

We propose a single-ring-resonator-based add/drop interferometer and theoretically investigate the transmission characteristics. Due to coherent interference of two resonant pathways, an electromagnetically induced-transparency (EIT)-like spectrum is produced and the line shapes of the transmission spectra are tunable by controlling the coupling coefficients between the waveguide and ring resonator. We observe the EIT-like behavior in a fiber system which agrees well with the theoretical analysis. The proposed configuration has potential applications in tunable delay lines.

Analog to multiple electromagnetically induced transparency in all-optical drop-filter systems

We theoretically study a parallel optical configuration which includes $N$ periodically coupled whispering-gallery-mode resonators. The model shows an obvious effect which has a direct analogy with the phenomenon of multiple electromagnetically induced transparency in quantum systems. The numerical simulations illuminate that the frequency transparency windows are sharp and highly transparent. We also briefly discuss the experimental feasibility of the current scheme in two practical systems, microrings and microdisks.

Research on Coupled Resonator Induced Transparency in Fourth-order Microring Resonator

崔丹凤 CUI Dan-feng

A fourth-order microring resonator structure was designed based on quantum coherence effects of electromagnetic induced transparency.Coupled-resonator-induced-transparency phenomenon which produced in resonator was analyzed theoretically.Key parameters of structures were simulated by Finite Difference Time Domain Method and Beam Propagation Method. The ring resonators were fabricated with electron beam lithography and the induction coupled plasma etching process. The structure was tested by vertical grating coupling method, the results show that a narrow transparent peak was obtained which is caused by interference due to phase elimination.Optical transmission delay is realized by two transmission peaks which are generated from mutual interference among ring resonators and one of the transmission spectrum full width at half maximum is 0.022nm.This structure can achieve high quality factor(Q=0.72×105),and the distance between the two resonance peaks separated by 0.084nm.The through port and drop port transmission spectra are coincided well with each other which excellent agree with the theoretical analysis.

Photonic coherence effects from dual-waveguide coupled pair of co-resonant microring resonators

Ahmer Naweed

We theoretically describe photonic manifestations of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and absorption (EIA) using co-resonant coupled microresonators (CMRs) as opposed to detuned CMRs explored previously. Here the coherent optical interactions between the two resonators are mediated via two adjacent waveguides and the photonic EIT and EIA are achieved by coupling two identical resonators to the waveguides with equal strength, although this coupling is distinct for each waveguide. Using co-resonant CMRs based on either identical or distinct intrinsic quality factor (Q) resonators, these effects may be obtained in both transmission and reflection. We elucidate origin of the sharp features in the spectra of co-resonant CMRs. Furthermore, we demonstrate tunability of these features using Q-tunable resonators, which may lead to tunable slow and fast light effects. The theoretical model described here greatly simplifies accurate numerical studies of coupled-resonator effects, as no additional calculations are required to account for the waveguide dispersion.
