Abstract

We report on experiments in which we have been able to actively cancel the motional Stark effect and observe pure diamagnetic spectra for the barium atom. These differ from those previously reported in that they contain no intruding structure. In addition, the sigma + and sigma - spectra have been found to be identical.

Motional Stark Effect and Its Active Cancellation in Diamagnetic Spectrum of Barium

Quan Wei, Hongping Liu, Shen Li +1 more

With time-of-flight and electric field ionization detection technique, we investigate the motional Stark effect for highly excited Rydberg barium in high magnetic field and its active cancellation experimentally. In the experiment, the atom beam is aligned at a small angle of 15° with respect to the magnetic field. The motional Stark effect cancellation is demonstrated on two sets of circularly polarized spectra in static magnetic field B = 1.00000 Tesla and B = 1.70000 Tesla, respectively, although the effect is very small (~3.5 Vcm −1 ) in our apparatus configuration.

The pure diamagnetic spectrum of strontium

Roger James Elliott, G Droungas, J P Connerade +2 more

We report on one-photon laser spectroscopy experiments in which we have obtained the even z-parity diamagnetic spectrum of Sr by actively cancelling the motional Stark effect. This spectrum differs from previous experimental studies in that it contains no electric-field-induced structure. New calculations are reported at a resolution comparable with the experimental data, and an excellent agreement between theory and experiment is obtained.

Resonance spectra of Ba Rydberg atom in electric field above the ionization limit

Jiakun Xu, Wenjie Yu, Qing Ye

Stark spectra of barium Rydberg states above the classical field-ionization limit have been recorded employing high-resolution laser spectroscopy with π and σ polarization. The resonance structure is observed obviously in experiment, and the theoretical calculations considering the core effect are well in coincidence with the experimental observation.

Nonlinear spectroscopy of barium in parallel electric and magnetic fields

Haifeng Yang, Wei Jia Gao, Hong Cheng +1 more

We report on the experimental spectral observations of barium in parallel electric and magnetic fields. The laser pulse is linearly polarized along or perpendicular to the fields, leading to the states m = 0 and the states m = ±1 populated, respectively, by one photon excitation. By sweeping the electric field, we observe the linear and nonlinear splitting of the diamagnetic spectrum as the electric field increases. The spectral anticrossing is induced by the atomic core effect. The Stark spectrum also shows an obvious nonlinear quadratic behavior when the applied magnetic field varies strongly. All spectra are well explained by the full quantum calculation after taking the quantum defect effects of the channel n s up to n f into account.

Strontium spectra in crossed electric and magnetic fields

J-P Connerade, M-S Zhan, J Rao +1 more

We report new experiments on the spectrum of Sr atoms in crossed electric and magnetic fields. We apply an experimental geometry which enables the two circular polarizations to be detected and recorded separately, thereby considerably simplifying the observed structure. This experimental procedure allows Stark maps for the diamagnetic structure to be constructed. We compare the data for Sr with analogous data reported recently for Ba. We also present theoretical calculations of the crossed-field spectrum, which agree well with our observations.
