Abstract

Strong resonant generation of the second harmonic by means of a transition forbidden in the electric-dipole, quadrupole, and magnetic-dipole approximations, was observed in the absence of external static electric and magnetic fields.

Optical Second Harmonic Generation in the Forbidden 22S1/2-32S1/2Transition of Atomic Lithium Vapor

Jumpei Okada, Yukio Fukuda, Masahiro Matsuoka

Second harmonic generation (SHG) in atomic Li vapor is studied when the 2 2 S 1/2 -3 2 S 1/2 two-photon transition is resonantly excited. This is an SHG in a medium with inversion symmetry, with no externally apptied electric or magnetic field, and with no apparent multipole moments associated with the resonant excitation. The SH polarization is found to be parallel to the intensity gradient of the incident laser beam when a cylindrical lens focusing is applied. The mechanism of this highly forbidden SHG is explained by the radial electric field induced by free expansion of photo-electrons around the laser beam axis.

Optical second-harmonic generation in atomic vapors with focused beams

Donald S. Bethune

Processes leading to second-harmonic generation when a single polarized beam is focused into neutral or partially ionized atomic vapor are considered, including electric-field-induced third-order mixing, and quadrupole and magnetic dipole processes. Estimates of the relative strengths of these processes are given. In addition, the polarization properties given by the tensor susceptibilities are discussed in detail.

Resonantly enhanced second-harmonic generation in zinc vapor

W. Jamroz, Paul E. LaRocque, Boris Peter Stoicheff

Coherent second-harmonic radiation has been generated in atomic zinc vapor at 1792.5 and 1601 A from the 5(1)S(0)and 4(1)D(2) states, respectively, by two-photon resonance enhancement. Measurements of the ratio of second-to third-harmonic generation suggest the occurrence of static electric fields of ~5 kV/cm. These fields are caused by ionization of ~2% of the atoms in the focal volume of the incident laser beam.

Time-Delayed Second Harmonic Generation

J. H. Brownell, Xilin Lu, Sven R. Hartmann

Second harmonic generation in Cs vapor is produced by the combined action of a polarized laser pulse and a magnetic field. It is delayed from the 10 ps excitation pulse by several hundred ps. The laser is two-photon resonant with the $6{S}_{\frac{1}{2}}\ensuremath{-}6{D}_{\frac{3}{2}}$ transition and initially induces a macroscopic quadrupole moment whose radiation pattern has a null in the forward direction. The magnetic field reshapes this pattern to produce second harmonic light, which is simply a free polarization decay signal evolving in a manner akin to the free induction decay following an adiabatic demagnetization.

Picosecond Studies of Optical Second Harmonic Generation in Atomic Vapor

Christopher S. Mullin, Doseok Kim, Marla B. Feller +1 more

Picosecond laser pulses are used to study the forbidden resonant second harmonic generation (SHG) in atomic vapor. The results can be understood quantitatively by an ionization-initiated dc-field-induced SHG model taking into account the temporal buildup of the dc field and transient behavior of the two-photon coherent excitation of the vapor.
