Energy transfer among Yb3+ ions in a silicate glass

Abstract

We have used time-resolved fluorescence line narrowing to study energy transfer among ${\mathrm{Yb}}^{3+}$ ions in a silicate glass as a function of energy mismatch between donors and acceptors and temperature from 4.2 to 51 K. The observed spectra are consistent with a one-phonon-assisted multipolar interaction between ${\mathrm{Yb}}^{3+}$ ions with a variation with site separation of ${r}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}13}$. These results are compared to that reported for other rare-earth-ion transitions in glasses and crystals.

Low-temperature homogeneous linewidths of Yb3+ in inorganic glasses

Richard T. Brundage, William M. Yen

We have measured the homogeneous linewidth of the $^{2}\mathrm{F}_{5/2}$(1)${\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}^{2}$${\mathrm{F}}_{7/2}$(1) transition of ${\mathrm{Yb}}^{3+}$ in silicate and phosphate glasses using fluorescence line narrowing between 6.5 and 70 K. The linewidth is observed to vary as ${T}^{1.9\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.1}$ at high temperature, changing to ${T}^{1.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.1}$ below 40 K. This behavior is compared to that observed in other systems and examined in light of current theories of dephasing in disordered systems.

Observation of Laser-Induced Fluorescence Line Narrowing in Glass: Nd

L. A. Riseberg

Laser-induced fluorescence line narrowing has been observed for the first time in a nonresonantly excited rare-earth system. Excitation with the 4727-\AA{} ${A}^{+}$ line into the $^{4}G_{\frac{11}{2}}$ level of ${\mathrm{Nd}}^{3+}$ in glass results in narrowing of transitions from the $^{4}F_{\frac{3}{2}}$ to both the $^{4}I_{\frac{9}{2}}$ ground manifold and the $^{4}I_{\frac{11}{2}}$ excited manifold. The concentration dependence of the line narrowing provides information regarding resonant ion-ion energy transfer within the inhomogeneously broadened system.

Transfer of excitation energy between trivalent rare earth ions in crystals

Georgii M. Zverev, I. I. Kuratev, А. М. Онищенко

An analysis is made of the transfer of the excitation energy between trivalent rare earth ions in crystals. The multipole interaction mechanisms are considered and allowances made for the migration of the excitation energy between donor ions. The proposed model is used in estimating the probabilities of elementary energy transfer events, diffusion coefficients of excitations, and concentrations of quenching centers in the case of several rare earth ions in Y3Al5O12. A comparison is made of the experimental and calculated concentration and temperature dependences of the transfer of the excitation energy between trivalent rare earth ions in Y3Al5O12 crystals; the agreement between the calculations and the experiment is good.

Optical Measurement of Narrow Band Rare-Earth 4f Levels with Energies Greater than the Band Gap of the Host

T. Schweizer, P. E.-A. Möbert, Jason Hector +4 more

Excited-state absorption spectra of erbium and thulium doped gallium lanthanum sulfide glasses reveal transitions whose final $4f$ states do not appear in the ground state absorption spectra due to resonance with the fundamental absorption of the glass host. The results give direct evidence for the model of isolated rare-earth ions with highly shielded $4f$ levels showing no noticeable interaction with the host material despite resonance. Only the energy splitting of the $4f$ levels is relevant for energy transfer processes between rare-earth ions and the host material, whereas the absolute energetic position is unimportant.

Spectral energy transfer in Pr F3 , Pr Cl3

D. S. Hamilton, Peter M. Selzer, William M. Yen

Time-resolved fluorescence line narrowing is used to study spectral energy transfer in Pr${\mathrm{F}}_{3}$ and Pr${\mathrm{Cl}}_{3}$. The excitation spectrum of Pr${\mathrm{F}}_{3}$ in the region of the ${(^{3}H_{4})}_{1}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}^{3}P_{0}$ absorption indicates that several strong satellite lines accompany the main transition, their origin being ascribed to different ${\mathrm{Pr}}^{3+}$ ions lying in strongly perturbed lattice sites. The spectral transfer within the inhomogeneously broadened main transiton is measured, where the energy mismatch is about 2 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. This process is characterized by a strong ($\ensuremath{\sim}{T}^{4.3}$) dependence of the transfer probability on sample temperature. The growth of the full inhomogeneous emission profile accompanies a uniform decay of the donor line shape. A transfer process between the lowest-energy satellite ions is also measured. Here the energy mismatch is 32 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ resulting in a weak temperature dependence for the transfer rate. Both the intraline and intersatellite transfer are characterized by simple exponential rate equations. Recent calculations of phonon-assisted transfer probabilities are compared to our measurements, with the intersatellite transfer ascribed to a "one-phonon direct" process whereas the transfer within the main transition occurs by a "one-phonon second-order" mechanism. In Pr${\mathrm{Cl}}_{3}$ the transfer times are faster than the 15-nsec response time of our detection system indicating a much stronger ion-ion coupling.

Decay times of radiative and non-radiative transitions in rare-earth ions

E. F. Kustov, Victor B. Loschenov, Irina Basieva

We present a theoretical method for evaluation of decay times of both radiative and non-radiative transitions in rare-earth ions in crystals and glasses. Relying on one experimentally known lifetime and known parameters of electrostatic and spin–orbit interaction, the fluorescence spectra can be modelled for various pumping wavelengths providing new insights into dynamical processes of fluorescence.
