Abstract

In this paper we present three optimization techniques of improving the performance of some irregular low-density parity-check ensemble with determinate structure and finite block length. Firstly, its permutation matrix optimization. We present a new random permutation matrix called as the Q-matrix. We substituted Q-matrix for identity matrix in base matrix array which can be expanded into H-matrix of the irregular QC-LDPC codes recommended in IEEE 802.16e standard draft and can make the performance of this QC-LDPC codes improve about 0.4 dB. Secondly, it is large girth optimization technique. We design H-matrix of the irregular LDPC ensemble and make it at least not include 8-cycle. Thirdly, its column weight optimization technique in H-matrix of the irregular LDPC ensemble. For the presented irregular LDPC ensemble, it is not such case that the larger the column weight is and the better the performance is, but the column weight should be a moderate value.

A Method of Constructing the Half-Rate QC-LDPC Codes with Linear Encoder, Maximum Column Weight Three and Inevitable Girth 26

Li Peng

This paper presents a method of constructing the half-rate irregular quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check codes which can provide linear encoding algorithm and their H-matrices may contain almost the least “1” elements comparing with H-matrices of all existing LDPC codes. This method shows that three kinds of special structural matrices, respectively named as S-matrix, M-matrix and A-matrix, are defined and constructed. With regard to the arbitrary large structural girth based on A-matrix, its general pattern is conceived and its basic rule is proved. A general method of constructing M-matrix with the inevitable girth larger than 24 is introduced by using generalized block design and treating A-matrix as its sub-matrix. S-matrix is generated by substituting specially circular-shift values for non-zero elements in M-matrix. Combining Hd-matrix generated from lifting the S-matrix and Hp-matrix with the approximate lower triangular array structure forms the H-matrix, i.e. H=[Hd Hp], which defines a class of half-rate irregular QC-LDPC codes with maximum column weight 3 and inevitable girth of length 26. Simulation tests show that the performance of the presented QC-LDPC code can achieve the signal-noise-ratio of below 2dB at the bit-error-rate of 10-5, which is comparable with the performance of the practical QC-LDPC codes in industrial Standard, but the complication of the former owing to the least “1” elements in H-matrix is lower than that of the later, as well as the storage requirement is smaller.

Design and performance evaluation of low complexity encoding methods for LDPC codes

Ambar Bajpai, Lunchakorn Wuttisittikulkij, Piya Kovintavewat

There is an important breakthrough in the field of forward error correction techniques, low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. These codes have potential to approach the Shannon limit with reliable performance on a given channel, known as the channel capacity. Recently, researchers pay much more attention towards LDPC codes because its performance is better than Turbo codes. However, the LDPC code is the best when it is an irregular code and uses with a very large block-length. Although, the short block-length LDPC codes perform not so well, they are easy to implement in various practical applications. Therefore, there is still a demand of new development on the encoding side of LDPC codes for various ranges of code rate and code length so as to capable of using in many applications. This thesis proposes the development of quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes for column weight 3. In the first part of this thesis, we propose a new construction algorithm of QC-LDPC codes for medium to large block-length by combining QC-LDPC codes of small block-length as their component codes, via Chinese remainder theorem (CRT). Such component codes were constructed by permuting each column block sequentially to attain the desire local girth. After combining all component codes to generate an expanded parity-check matrix, the resulting girth is greater than or at least equal to the maximum girth of the component codes. Simulation results show that our proposed construction method of the parity-check matrix significantly outperforms the other well-known existing methods in terms of low error-floor, simple structure, high performance, and can reduce encoding complexity. In addition, this thesis also proposes two new construction methods for QC-LDPC codes, namely a base matrix method and a subtraction based method. A base matrix based method is a simple, less computational complexity method for constructing the exponent matrix (3, K) of girth 8, 10 and 12 of QC-LDPC codes. Another method is a subtraction method, which has a similar exponent matrix as a base matrix method and has a girth at least 8. Results indicate that the LDPC codes constructed from these two methods have flexibility for arbitrary block-column length K and have a similar BER performance if compared to existing methods.

Xiaopeng Chen, Lin Zhou, Rui Zhao +1 more

Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check (QC-LDPC) codes require less hardware resources due to the quasi-cyclic structure of parity-check matrices. In this paper, two improved methods for constructing QC-LDPC codes are proposed.Firstly, in order to make sure the masked LDPC codes have flexible code rate and code length, an improved construction of masking matrix is presented. The proposed regular masking matrix of QC-LDPC codes have the girth at least 6.Then, the irregular codes are constructed by using improved finite field approach and PEG algorithm, which result in large girth and less short cycles.Simulations demonstrate that the proposed QC-LDPC codes have both lower error floor and good waterfall performance.

The Design of Structured Low-Density Parity-Check Codes With Large Girth

Jing Long

This paper, based on algebra and graph, proposes a method for constructing structured low-density parity-check(LDPC) codes. In this method, the authors design a connected graph with three kinds of special path to ensure that the Tanner graph of the parity check matrix mapped from the connected graph is without short cycles. The construction method results in two classes of(3,k)-regular quasi-cyclic LDPC codes with girth 8 and 12 respectively.Furthermore,by extending this construction method, two classes of LDPC codes with column weight 2,whose girths are respectively 16 and 24,can be obtained. The simulation studies show that these codes can achieve better performance than randomly constructed regular LDPC codes over AWGN channels with iterative decoding. At the BER of 10-5,the new proposed(3,6)-regular(4356,2205) QC-LDPC code performs 1.48dB from the Shannon limit. Moreover,it outperforms the random regular LDPC code of comparable parameters by 0.1dB.For the new proposed structured LDPC codes with column weight 2,they can achieve about 2dB coding gains with respect to the random regular LDPC codes with similar block lengths and code rates.

Design of good quasi-cyclic LDPC codes

Xu Dan

The existing design of quasi-cyclic(QC) low-density parity-check(LDPC) codes has not considered the problems of short length girths and the rows' dependency. The first problem leads to the BER performance of QC LDPC codes to be much poorer than that of randomly constructed LDPC codes, while the second problem leads to the difficulty of construction of generator matrices from parity-check matrices. To solve the first problem, the constraint conditions for designing the QC LDPC codes are proposed, and the dimension and shift factors of the circulant matrices of the given sparse parity-check matrix are adjusted according to the test results of both girth 4 and girth 6.To solve the second problem,an approach of irregular QC LDPC codes is proposed. The proposed approach is to replace some sub-matrices by zero matrices and identity matrices at special positions in the given sparse parity-check matrix so as to get a nonsingular square matrix for the construction of the generator matrix.Though adopting bidiagonal submatrices in parity-check matrix can solve the rows' dependency problem, many code words with low weights will occur, which leads to the BER performance can not be better by increasing code lengths.Examples are provided for the proposed design of QC LDPC codes, and computer simulation results show that the proposed QC LDPC codes achieve good BER performance.

Construction of irregular LDPC codes based on Balanced Incomplete Block Designs

Siddarama R. Patil, Sant Saran Pathak

In this paper, we present a method to design irregular structured low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes based on balanced incomplete block designs (BIBD). The problem of designing irregular structured LDPC codes that have good overall error performance for a wide range of code rates and block sizes with attractive storage requirements is attempted. The proposed codes are well structured and unlike random codes can lend themselves to a very low-complexity implementation. The codes constructed by this method have the girth at least 6 and they perform well with the sum-product iterative decoding algorithm. Furthermore, the codes are compared with known random LDPC codes, in order to assess their relative achievable performance. The proposed LDPC codes demonstrate performance that is better than an average random LDPC code of similar block length, code rate and parity check matrix sparsity.
