Negative Group Velocity in the Absence of Absorption Resonance

Dexin Ye, Guoan Zheng, Jingyu Wang +4 more

Scientific community has well recognized that a Lorentzian medium exhibits anomalous dispersion behavior in its resonance absorption region. To satisfy the Krammers-Kronig relation, such an anomalous region has to be accompanied with significant loss, and thus, experimental observations of negative group velocity in this region generally require a gain-assisted approach. In this letter, we demonstrate that the negative group velocity can also be observed in the absence of absorption resonance. We show that the k-surface of a passive uniaxial Lorentzian medium undergoes a distortion near the plasma frequency. This process yields an anomalous dispersion bandwidth that is far away from the absorption resonance region, and enables the observation of negative group velocity at the plasma frequency band. Introducing anomalous dispersion in a well-controlled manner would greatly benefit the research of ultrafast photonics and find potential applications in optical delay lines, optical data storage and devices for quantum information processing.

Anomalous dispersion of transparent atomic two- and three-level ensembles

Alessandra S. Rocco, Andreas Wicht, R.-H. Rinkleff +1 more

The absorption and dispersion properties of a driven two-level atomic system probed by a weak field have been measured simultaneously with a phase modulated Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We find that the resonant absorption and the negative dispersion are reduced with respect to the nondriving case by a factor of 490 and 47, respectively, which is in good agreement with the theory. This means a $\ensuremath{\sim}10$-fold enhancement of the amount of dispersion provided per amount of residual absorption. The experimental values are compared to the requirements that have to be fulfilled for the realization of a broadband, high finesse optical cavity. Finally, we propose a specific degenerate three-level system that overcomes some of the shortcomings of the driven two-level atom.

Investigation of Electromagnetically Induced Absorption

Fangyi Liu

Electromagnetically induced absorption(EIA) is an intriguing phenomenon of light-atom interaction. The study of its nonlinear behaviors has theoretical significance and potential applications. On the basis of the researches of degenerate two-level system,N-type four-level system and quasi degenerate N-type level system, the forming mechanism and creating conditions of EIA are given. The result that destructive interference of atomic coherence leads to electromagnetically induced absorption is shown.Furthermore, the dramatic change of dispersion line in the corresponding frequency occurs in the anomalous dispersion, which can be used to realize speeding up of the light group velocity or negative group velocity. The applications of EIA are being further studied.
