Abstract

We investigate systems of identical bosons with the focus on two-body correlations. We apply a Faddeev type of decomposition of the wavefunction. At large scattering length a series of spatially extended many-body bound states appears, analogously to the three-body Efimov states. We discuss a recombination process with these many-body Efimov states as intermediate states.

Correlated Trapped Bosons and the Many-Body Efimov Effect

Ole Gade Sørensen, D. V. Fedorov, A. S. Jensen

We study two-body correlations in systems of identical bosons. We use a Faddeev type of decomposition of the wave function where all pairs of particles are treated equally. At large scattering length appears a series of Efimov-like states, i.e., spatially extended, model-independent many-body bound states inside the trap. They may play a role in the decay of Bose-Einstein condensates.

Structure of boson systems beyond the mean field

O Sørensen, D. V. Fedorov, A. S. Jensen

We investigate systems of identical bosons with the focus on two-body correlations. We use the hyperspherical adiabatic method and a decomposition of the wave function in two-body amplitudes. An analytic parametrization is used for the adiabatic effective radial potential. We discuss the structure of a condensate for arbitrary scattering length. Stability and time scales for various decay processes are estimated. The previously predicted Efimov-like states are found to be very narrow. We discuss the validity conditions and formal connections between the zero- and finite-range mean-field approximations, Faddeev-Yakubovskii formulation, Jastrow ansatz, and the present method. We compare numerical results from present work with mean-field calculations and discuss qualitatively the connection with measurements.

CorrelatedN-boson systems for arbitrary scattering length

O. Sørensen, D. V. Fedorov, A. S. Jensen

We investigate systems of identical bosons with the focus on two-body correlations and attractive finite-range potentials. We use a hyperspherical adiabatic method and apply a Faddeev type of decomposition of the wave function. We discuss the structure of a condensate as a function of particle number and scattering length. We establish universal scaling relations for the critical effective radial potentials for distances where the average distance between particle pairs is larger than the interaction range. The correlations in the wave function restore the large-distance mean-field behavior with the correct two-body interaction. We discuss various processes limiting the stability of condensates. With correlations we confirm that macroscopic tunneling dominates when the trap length is about half of the particle number times the scattering length.

Efimov resonances in atom-diatom scattering

E. Nielsen, Hiroya Suno, Brett D. Esry

We have investigated three identical bosons with very large pairwise scattering lengths. Normally such a situation is associated with Efimov states, where the three-body system has a set of very loosely bound states close to the three-body threshold. In the limit of infinite scattering length, the three-body system has infinitely many bound states. If, however, the two-body subsystems have deep lying two-body bound states, the Efimov states lie over the corresponding thresholds for breakup. We have calculated the positions and widths of these Feshbach resonances for some simple potentials numerically and have extracted the systematics. We explore the possibility of observing such Efimov resonances in atom-diatom scattering experiments with alkali atoms.

Efimov's Effect: A New Pathology of Three-Particle Systems. II

R. D. Amado, Julian V. Noble

By studying the eigenvalue spectrum of the Faddeev kernel in a certain singular limit, we give an independent proof of an effect recently deduced by Efimov: When three identical particles interact via short-range pairwise potentials, the number of three-body bound states grows without limit when the pairwise scattering length $a$ becomes large. [The number of bound states is then roughly $(\frac{1}{\ensuremath{\pi}})\mathrm{ln}(\ensuremath{\Lambda}|a|)$, where $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ is a momentum cutoff]. We extend our proof to the case where only two particles are identical and show that Efimov's effect persists in the special limiting cases with two heavy and one light particle, and with two light and one heavy particle.

N-body Efimov states of trapped bosons

Mathias Kirk Thøgersen, D. V. Fedorov, A. S. Jensen

We demonstrate the possibility of existence of meta-stable N-body Efimov states in trapped Bose systems with large scattering length. We calculate spectra of trapped systems of N=3,4,5,6, and 7 bosons using a stochastic variational method with a restricted correlated Gaussian basis. For each system the calculations reveal a series of Efimov states where the energy and the r.m.s. radius exhibit the characteristic exponential dependence upon the state number. We also estimate the contribution of these states to the recombination rate of Bose-Einstein condensates.
