Origin of spectral tuning dependence of the Tl anti-Stokes Raman laser

Abstract

The origin of the dip and asymmetry in the tuning curve of the Tl anti-Stokes Raman laser is investigated. The dip is mainly attributed to a defocusing effect of the pumping dye laser beam caused by Tl atomic number density gradient over the beam cross section. The asymmetry is assigned to different pumping dye laser power densities due to focusing on the red side and to defocusing on the blue side of the resonance of the Tl 62P3/2-72S1/2 transition.

Focusing and defocusing of a near-resonant dye laser beam by photodissociation-produced Tl atoms

Jie Zhang, Terence A. King

A new optical effect showing focusing and defocusing of a near-resonant dye laser beam in Tl atomic vapour produced by photodissociation is reported. The effect is attributed to wavefront distortion of the dye laser beam, caused by Tl vapour number density gradient produced via an inhomogeneous intensity distribution of the dissociation KrF excimer laser beam, and the anomalous dispersion of Tl atoms near the resonance of the 6 2 P 3/2 -7 2 S 1/2 transition.

Threshold and dispersion effects in the anti-Stokes Raman laser

J. C. White, Don O. Henderson

Threshold characteristics for an anti-Stokes Raman laser based on inverted, metastable TI * (6p(2)P degrees (3/2)) atoms are studied. Raman upconversion of a tunable dye laser at 535 to 378 nm is observed with an overall tuning range of 1125 cm(-1) for a single-pass laser device. The anti-Stokes pump-laser threshold varies inversely as the square of the detuning from the intermediate Raman level, except in a region ~50 cm(-1) to either side of the resonance, where the threshold is constant. These observations are explained in terms of group-velocity dispersion effects and are in good agreement with a simple theoretical model.

Tuning and saturation behavior of the anti-Stokes Raman laser

J. C. White, Don O. Henderson

The tuning and saturation behavior of the anti-Stokes Raman laser is examined experimentally for the first reported time in a Raman medium of inverted, metastable Tl* (6p(2)P degrees (3/2)). Two significant regions of saturation are identified that correspond to atomic saturation and pump depletion of the input laser field.

Laser focusing and defocusing via anomalous dispersion and density inhomogeneity in Tl vapour

Jingyuan Zhang, Terence A. King

An optical effect showing focusing and defocusing of a dye laser beam near the atomic resonance of the Tl*6p 2 P 3/2 -7s 2 S 1/2 transition in Tl vapour produced by photodissociation is reported. The experimental investigation of the effect as a function of detuning, vapour number density, dissociation laser energy and dye laser energy is presented. The effect is attributed to distortion of the dye laser wavefront by anomalous dispersion near the resonance and the inhomogeneous number density of Tl atomic vapour produced by an inhomogeneous intensity distribution of the dissociation laser.

Resonant peak in the output spectral profile of an ionic anti-Stokes Raman laser

Sergei A Babin, Sergey I. Kablukov, S. Khorev +4 more

Continuous-wave generation of the anti-Stokes Raman laser is demonstrated in the new $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ scheme $\mathrm{Ar}$ II ${3d}^{\ensuremath{'}}{}^{2}{G}_{9/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{4p}^{\ensuremath{'}}{}^{2}{F}_{7/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{4s}^{\ensuremath{'}}{}^{2}{D}_{5/2}$ with quasimetastable initial and final levels. Red pump radiation with wavelength ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{p}=611 \mathrm{nm}$ from a dye laser that excites transition ${3d}^{\ensuremath{'}}{}^{2}{G}_{9/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{4p}^{\ensuremath{'}}{}^{2}{F}_{7/2}$ is converted into the blue radiation at $\ensuremath{\lambda}=461 \mathrm{nm}$ ${(4p}^{\ensuremath{'}}{}^{2}{F}_{7/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{4s}^{\ensuremath{'}}{}^{2}{D}_{5/2})$ with efficiency of about $30%.$ The tunability range spans more than 20 GHz around exact resonance, which is five times broader than the Doppler contour. The output frequency $\ensuremath{\omega}$ is found to depend linearly on the frequency ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{p}$ of the pump field: $\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\simeq}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{p}{\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{p}/\ensuremath{\lambda}.$ A sharp peak of output power is observed in the spectral profile at the exact resonance instead of the well-known two-photon dip. The model is proposed that includes ionic scattering in plasma and interaction of the running pump and standing output waves. The theory offers an interpretation of the observed peak.

Up-conversion Using Stimulated Anti-stokes Raman Scattering and Stimulated Collisional Induced Fluorescence in Tl

D. G. Cunningham, Donal J. Denvir, I. Duncan +1 more

We have observed stimulated collisional induced fluorescence at 377·6 nm in a Tl anti-Stokes Raman up-converter. The up-converter was operated with an excess pressure of argon, and the influence of the ‘collisional’ pumping of the Tl (72S½) level on both the anti-Stokes Raman and collision-induced fluorescence was investigated.
