Bosons and fermions in a one‐dimensional harmonic oscillator potential

Abstract

Abstract The symmetry properties of bosons and fermions in a one‐dimensional harmonic oscillator are explored. It is shown that there is a one‐to‐one correspondence between the counts of the maximal spin states states formed by N‐noninteracting bosons and fermions in a one‐dimensional harmonic oscillator. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hidden symmetries and thermodynamic properties for a harmonic oscillator plus an inverse square potential

Shi‐Hai Dong, Marcelo Lozada‐Cassou, Yu Jiang +2 more

Abstract The exact solutions of a one‐dimensional Schrödinger equation with a harmonic oscillator plus an inverse square potential are obtained. The ladder operators constructed directly from the normalized wavefunctions are found to satisfy a su(1, 1) algebra. Another hidden symmetry is used to explore the relations between the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions by substituting x → −ix. The vibrational partition function Z is calculated exactly to study thermodynamic functions such as the vibrational mean energy U, specific heat C, free energy F, and entropy S. It is both interesting and surprising to find that both vibrational specific heat C and entropy S are independent of the potential strength α. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem, 2007

Spectral equivalence of bosons and fermions in one-dimensional harmonic potentials

Michael Crescimanno, Adam Scott Landsberg

Recently, Schmidt and Schnack [Physica A 260, 479 (1998)], following earlier references, reiterate that the specific heat of N noninteracting bosons in a one-dimensional harmonic well equals that of N noninteracting fermions in the same potential. We show that this peculiar relationship between heat capacities results from a more dramatic equivalence between Bose and Fermi systems. Namely, we prove that the excitations of such Bose and Fermi systems are spectrally equivalent. Two complementary proofs of this equivalence are provided; one based on a combinatoric argument, the other from analysis of the underlying dynamical symmetry group.

Thermodynamic fermion-boson symmetry in harmonic oscillator potentials

Schmidt, H.-J, Schnack, J

A remarkable thermodynamic fermion–boson symmetry is found for the canonical ensemble of ideal quantum gases in harmonic oscillator potentials of odd dimensions. The bosonic partition function is related to the fermionic one extended to negative temperatures, and vice versa.

Fermionic Properties of Two Interacting Bosons in a Two-Dimensional Harmonic Trap

Pere Mujal, Artur Polls, Bruno Juliá-Díaz

The system of two interacting bosons in a two-dimensional harmonic trap is compared with the system consisting of two noninteracting fermions in the same potential. In particular, we discuss how the properties of the ground state of the system, e.g., the different contributions to the total energy, change as we vary both the strength and range of the atom–atom interaction. In particular, we focus on the short-range and strong interacting limit of the two-boson system and compare it to the noninteracting two-fermion system by properly symmetrizing the corresponding degenerate ground state wave functions. In that limit, we show that the density profile of the two-boson system has a tendency similar to the system of two noninteracting fermions. Similarly, the correlations induced when the interaction strength is increased result in a similar pair correlation function for both systems.

Quantum spectrum of three anyons in an oscillator potential

M. V. N. Murthy, J. Law, M. Brack +1 more

The low-lying quantum states of three anyons confined in a harmonic-oscillator well are obtained numerically. The interpolation of these states between the limits of noninteracting bosons to noninteracting fermions in the well is established. Particular attention is paid to the transformation of the fermionic ground state to an excited Bosonic state, and its overlap with Laughlin-Wu-type correlated states.
