Influence of a gas lens on the profile of a narrow resonance in a cell and in an interferometer

Abstract

A theoretical investigation is reported of the influence of self-focusing of Gaussian beams on the profile of a saturated absorption resonance in laser frequency standards. An analysis is made of systems with an external nonlinearly absorbing cell and an external interferometer containing a nonlinear absorber. Analytic relationships for the profile of an asymmetric resonance and a shift of its maximum in the course of local and integral photodetection of an optical beam are derived on the assumption of weak absorption and saturation.

New method for calculation of the self-interaction and its application to an analysis of the shift of saturated absorption resonances in Gaussian beams

Vladimir Leonardovich Derbov, Leonid A. Melnikov, A. D. Novikov

A new modification of the generalized method of moments is used to derive a system of differential equations which describe the behavior of a Gaussian beam in a nonlinear medium. This modification is used in an analysis of an asymmetry and frequency shifts of saturated absorption resonances and dispersion due to light-induced aperture and lens-like properties of the medium.

Pulling of the frequency of a narrow resonance in an interferometer with a nonlinearly absorbing medium

E. N. Bazarov, G A Gerasimov, V. P. Gubin +3 more

Theoretical and experimental investigations are reported of the shifts due to the pulling of a reference resonance in an external interferometer with a nonlinear absorber. It is shown that for a fixed interferometer length its tuning relative to the transition frequency results in a large additional shift and asymmetry of a resonance because of a correction due to saturated dispersion of the medium. The shifts are considered for the pulling in a system with noninstantaneous and instantaneous locking of an interferometer mode to the radiation frequency.

Shifts of the emission frequency of a third-harmonic-stabilized laser due to saturation of the refractive index

Yurii M Malyshev, Yu G Rastorguev, Alexandre N. Titov

A laser with an internal absorption cell stabilized with the aid of its third harmonic is investigated. Considerable frequency shifts are observed when the gas pressure in the cell, depth of modulation, and intensity of the saturating field are altered. These shifts are attributed to the appearance of lens-like properties in the absorbing medium under the action of a resonant field with a Gaussian intensity distribution.

Influence of transverse configuration of running laser beam on sub-Doppler structure of its absorption spectrum in thin gas cell

А. Ч. Измайлов

The theoretical investigation is conducted of the strong dependence of sub-Doppler resonances of absorption on the transverse intensity profile of a monochromatic laser beam propagating through a thin cell with rarefied gas medium. The resonances under study correspond to centers of quantum transitions and are caused by the specificity of the optical pumping of atoms during their flight between the walls of a thin cell whose internal thickness is many times smaller than its diameter. The detection of narrow high-contrast sub-Doppler absorption resonances, which are prospective for efficient laser-frequency stabilization, can be facilitated by the proper selection of the radial distribution of the light beam intensity in the cell’s transverse cross section.

Numerical simulation of nonlinear resonance spectra in aperture-limited light beams having various profiles

Vladimir Leonardovich Derbov, Sergey K. Potapov, Inna L. Plastun +3 more

Only for optically thin layers and plane waves may the intensity of a light wave be unambiguously expressed in terms of the nonlinear susceptibility of the medium. In aperture limited light beams the saturation parameter and the Stark shifts are local variables, while the output intensity of the pump and probe beams is an integral characteristic of the transmission process. The output spectrum is affected by diffraction, nonlinear refraction, and saturated absorption. The nonlinear refraction is a cause of a spectral line asymmetry which is well- known in saturation spectroscopy. In addition to usual line broadening, the saturated absorption causes specific beam effects, related to the formation of a self-induced transparency channel. The diffraction of the beam due to this self-induced aperture may result in the enhancement of the on-axis intensity, which is not a result of the self-induced lens effects. All these factors are taken into account by the mathematical model suggested in the present work. The propagation of the near-resonance saturating pump and non-saturating probe beams of various initial profiles through a homogeneously broadened two-level gas is simulated numerically. The calculations carried out make it possible to analyze the contribution of the propagation phenomena, mentioned above, to the output spectra of the beams.

Ultimate precision of the absorption saturation method

It is shown that lens-like properties of an active medium, induced by a saturating field or an electron distribution, are responsible for the shift and asymmetry of a molecular resonance observed in lasers with a nonlinearly absorbing cell.
