Optical bistability in low-dimensional semiconductor heterostructures under cw pump laser and infrared pulse signals

Hamid Reza Hamedi, Ali Khaledi‐Nasab, Ali Raheli +2 more

We have investigated theoretically the optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability in quantum-well (QW) semiconductor heterostructures. The effect of a cw pump laser field and a control infrared pulse signal on OB is discussed. It is found that the OB threshold can be controlled by varying the strength of applied fields. It is also shown that OB can be switched to optical multistability or vice versa just using an appropriate relative phase of applied fields. This investigation may open up some new possibilities for applications in all-optical switching in quantum-well structures.

Optical Bistability in 2D Photonic Crystal Slab Resonators

Myung‐Ki Kim, In-Kag Hwang, Yong-Hee Lee

We report the low-power optical bistability under the continuous wave pumping conditions in photonic crystal linear resonators containing the InGaAsP quantum well active medium. The threshold bistable power is measured to be 35 muW at the normalized detuning of -1.724, by employing fiber coupling techniques.

Bistability and self-pulsing in Cerenkov-type optical parametric interactions

V. N. Lugovoǐ

A Cerenkov-type optical parametric oscillator exhibiting optical bistability, hysteresis, self-pulsing, and other effects is discussed. Noteworthy are a low threshold intensity of the pumping beam and a short characteristic time of the relaxation to steady-state light oscillations in the oscillator.
