Effects of Atomic Coherence on Collapses and Revivals in the Binomial State of the Field

Amitabh Joshi, Ravinder Rupchand Puri

The effects of the coherence between the states of a two-level atom on the phenomenon of collapses and revivals in an undamped binomial state of the electromagnetic field are investigated. It is found that the Rabi oscillations exhibit qualitatively different behaviour for different phases of coherence between the levels. This behaviour in the binomial state of the field is in contrast with that in a coherent state field, in which case the Rabi oscillations are qualitatively the same for all values of the coherence between the two atomic levels.

Squeezed spin states

James D. Macomber, Robert Lynch

The squeezed states of a spin-1/2 particle are described, and the response of such a particle to sudden illumination by a resonant, circularly polarized, coherent electromagnetic wave in the absence of relaxation is given. It is shown that the resultant undamped Torrey nutations (Rabi flops) lead to periodic squeezing of the spin states. The error ellipsoids associated with the minimum-uncertainty states for this system are presented. The implications of these results for the squeezing of the field vectors of the electromagnetic radiation emitted by spins and quasi-two-level atomic systems (in states which have been prepared by coherent transient driving fields) are pointed out.
