Degenerate spin-boson system

Abstract

The temporal evolution of a degenerate two-level system (spin) coupled to a dissipative bath (bosons) is studied in this Rapid Communication. Closed-form expressions for the occupancy probabilities and correlation functions are found by functional methods. The non-Markovian characteristics such as explicit dependence on the initial condition and a possible long-time tail behavior are shown to be present. We also suggest a reasonable procedure for the construction of the Green's function of the nondegenerate system.

Spin-boson model under dephasing: Markovian versus non-Markovian dynamics

Naushad Ahmad Kamar, Daniel A. Paz, Mohammad F. Maghrebi

The spin-boson model, describing a two-level system coupled to a bosonic bath, is extensively studied as a paradigmatic dissipative quantum system, exhibiting rich dynamical behavior and even a localization transition in the strong coupling regime. Here, we additionally consider dephasing as a source of Markovian dissipation on top of the non-Markovian dynamics due to an Ohmic bath, and investigate the dynamics of the spin. We show that the characteristic frequency of the spin dynamics, while strongly renormalized by the bosonic bath, changes in a simple fashion (or does not change at all) with dephasing. To obtain these results, we develop an exact nonperturbative method known as the stochastic Schr\"odinger equation, mimicking the Ohmic bath via a stochastic magnetic field combined with the Lindblad quantum master equation due to dephasing, which allows us to numerically compute the dynamics. Furthermore, we derive weak-coupling analytic results utilizing the well-known noninteracting blip approximation. Our findings are relevant to quantum simulation of the spin-boson model in the regime of strong coupling in trapped ions and circuit QED architectures among others.

Spin–spin model for two-level system/bath problems: A numerical study

Andrei A. Golosov, Stefan I. Tsonchev, Philip Pechukas +1 more

We study a new model for treating quantum dissipative systems, in which the bath is modeled as a collection of spins coupled to the system of interest. We develop a quasiclassical method to study this model, approximating the quantum Heisenberg equations by the classical ones, supplemented with stochastic initial conditions carefully chosen so that the results obtained from the classical equations are as close as possible to the quantum results. Using this method we compare the dynamics of such a spin–spin system with that of a spin–boson system, in which the bath is modeled as a collection of harmonic oscillators. We verify numerically that when the system-bath coupling is spread over many bath spins (the Brownian motion limit), the spin–spin model can be mapped on the spin–boson model (although with a temperature dependent spectral density). We also demonstrate that the two dissipative models are qualitatively very different in a non-Brownian motion regime.

Spontaneous and Induced Emission of Soft Bosons: Exact Non-Markovian Solution

Benjamin Fain

An exact solution of the time-dependent problem has been obtained for a degenerate two-level system interacting with a harmonic boson field. Unlike the Weisskopf-Wigner solution this solution takes into account various many-boson processes and is non-Markovian. There is no exponential decay and the asymptotic behavior explicitly depends on the initial conditions. Both spontaneous and stimulated processes have been considered.

Long-time Markovianity of Multi-level Systems in the Rotating Wave Approximation

Alexander Evgen’evich Teretenkov

For the model of a multi-level system in the rotating wave approximation we obtain the corrections for a usual weak coupling limit dynamics by means of perturbation theory with Bogolubov-van Hove scaling. It generalizes our previous results on a spin-boson model in the rotating wave approximation. Additionally, in this work we take into account some dependence of the system Hamiltonian on the small parameter. We show that the dynamics is long-time Markovian, i.e. after the bath correlation time all the non-Markovianity could be captured by the renormalization of initial condition and correlation functions.

Power-law tails and non-Markovian dynamics in open quantum systems: An exact solution from Keldysh field theory

Ahana Chakraborty, Rajdeep Sensarma

The Born-Markov approximation is widely used to study the dynamics of open quantum systems coupled to external baths. Using Keldysh formalism, we show that the dynamics of a system of bosons (fermions) linearly coupled to a noninteracting bosonic (fermionic) bath falls outside this paradigm if the bath spectral function has nonanalyticities as a function of frequency. In this case, we show that the dissipative and noise kernels governing the dynamics have distinct power-law tails. The Green's functions show a short-time ``quasi''-Markovian exponential decay before crossing over to a power-law tail governed by the nonanalyticity of the spectral function. We study a system of bosons (fermions) hopping on a one-dimensional lattice, where each site is coupled linearly to an independent bath of noninteracting bosons (fermions). We obtain exact expressions for the Green's functions of this system, which show power-law decay $\ensuremath{\sim}|t\ensuremath{-}{t}^{\ensuremath{'}}{|}^{\ensuremath{-}3/2}$. We use these to calculate the density and current profile, as well as unequal-time current-current correlators. While the density and current profiles show interesting quantitative deviations from Markovian results, the current-current correlators show qualitatively distinct long-time power-law tails $|t\ensuremath{-}{t}^{\ensuremath{'}}{|}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ characteristic of non-Markovian dynamics. We show that the power-law decays survive in the presence of interparticle interaction in the system, but the crossover time scale is shifted to larger values with increasing interaction strength.

Study of non-equilibrium Green's functions beyond Born approximation in open quantum systems

Katha Ganguly, Bijay Kumar Agarwalla

We provide a systematic approach to compute different kinds of non-equilibrium Green's functions for open quantum systems which are essentially two-point correlation functions in time. We reveal that the definition of Green's functions based on the Born approximation does not provide the correct results in the leading order of the system-bath coupling. We next provide a systematic correction term in Green's functions by going beyond the Born approximation and incorporating a finite correlation between the system and the bath. We primarily focus on two paradigmatic models of open quantum systems, namely, the dissipative Caldeira-Leggett model and the dissipative spin-boson model. We show that the inclusion of such a correction correctly reproduces the Kadanoff-Baym type equation for the so-called lesser or greater components of the Green's functions and provides the correct long-time result up to the first non-zero order of the system-bath coupling, satisfying the detailed balance condition in thermal equilibrium. We further extend our study to a system coupled to multiple reservoirs simultaneously that are maintained at different temperatures and obtain expressions for non-equilibrium steady-state energy current, once again correct up to the first non-zero order of the system-bath coupling.
