Abstract

This paper presents a method to construct regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes of short block length and high rate based on a special type of combinatoric designs, i.e., balanced incomplete block designs (BIBDs) with lambda = 2 whose construction are based on cyclic difference families. Although the Tanner graph of the codes constructed contains some cycles of length 4, simulation results show that they perform well under belief propagation (BP) decoding. Further, these codes are quasi-cyclic (QC) codes and hence can be encoded efficiently

Construction of well-structured quasi-cyclic low-density parity check codes

B. Honary, Abdolhosein Moinian, Bassem Ammar

Two classes of well-structured binary low-density parity check codes (LDPC) are described. The first class is based on a branch of combinatorial mathematics, known as the balanced incomplete block design (BIBD). Construction of three types of codes derived from BIBD designs is illustrated in addition to a family of LDPC codes constructed by decomposition of incidence matrices of the proposed BIBD designs. The decomposition technique reduces the density of the parity check matrix and hence reduces the number of short cycles, which generally lead to better performing LDPC codes. The second class of well-structured LDPC codes, Vandermonde or array LDPC codes, are defined by a small number of parameters and cover a large set of code lengths and rates with different column weights. The presented LDPC codes are quasi-cyclic with no cycles of length four; hence simple encoding while maintaining good performance is achieved. Furthermore, the codes are compared with known random LDPC codes, in order to assess their relative achievable performance/complexity trade-offs. It is shown that well-structured LDPC codes perform very similar to the known random LDPC codes.

Construction of Low-Density Parity-Check Codes Based on Balanced Incomplete Block Designs

Bassem Ammar, B. Honary, Y. Kou +2 more

This correspondence presents a method for constructing structured regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes based on a special type of combinatoric designs, known as balance incomplete block designs. Codes constructed by this method have girths at least 6 and they perform well with iterative decoding. Furthermore, several classes of these codes are quasi-cyclic and hence their encoding can be implemented with simple feedback shift registers.

Construction of High-Rate Regular Quasi-Cyclic LDPC Codes Based on Cyclic Difference Families

Hosung Park, Seokbeom Hong, Jong‐Seon No +1 more

For a high-rate case, it is difficult to randomly construct good low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes of short and moderate lengths because their Tanner graphs are prone to have short cycles. Also, the existing high-rate quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes can be constructed only for very restricted code parameters. In this paper, based on special classes of cyclic difference families, we propose a new construction method of high-rate regular QC LDPC codes having parity-check matrices consisting of a single row of circulants with column-weight 3 or 4. The proposed QC LDPC codes can be constructed for various code rates and lengths including the minimum achievable length for given column-weight and design rate under girth 6. It is observed that the parity-check matrices of the proposed QC LDPC codes have full rank for column-weight 3 and just one redundant row for column-weight 4. It is shown that the error correcting performance of the proposed QC LDPC codes of short and moderate lengths is almost the same as that of the existing ones through numerical analysis.

LDPC Code Based on Balanced Incomplete Block Design and Cycle Permutation Matrix

Yanhu Shan

A method to construct a flexible length or rate of quasi-cyclic Low Density Parity Check(LDPC) codes based on Balanced Incomplete Block Design(BIBD) and cycle permutation matrix is proposed.Based on actual demand, the corresponding template matrix is constructed by BIBD method. The template matrix is extended by the appropriate cycle permutation matrix. The quasi-cyclic LDPC codes constructed by the proposed method have a good structure and flexibility. This method improves the efficiency of construction good codes which meet the needs of a practical application.Simulations show that quasi-cyclic LDPC codes constructed by the proposed method perform well over AWGN channels with iterative decoding and have a lower error floor.

LDPC Codes on Balanced Incomplete Block Designs: Construction, Girth, and Cycle Structure Analysis

Hengzhou Xu, Xiaodong Zhang, Mengmeng Xu +2 more

In this paper, we investigate the cycle structure inherent in the Tanner graphs of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes constructed from balanced incomplete block designs (BIBDs). We begin by delineating the incidence structure of BIBDs and propose a methodology for constructing LDPC codes based on these designs. By analyzing the incidence relations between points and blocks within a BIBD, we prove that the resulting LDPC codes possess a girth of 6. Subsequently, we provide a detailed analysis of the cycle structure of the constructed LDPC codes and introduce a systematic approach for enumerating their short cycles. Using this method, we determine the exact numbers of cycles of lengths 6 and 8. Simulation results demonstrate that the constructed LDPC codes exhibit excellent performance.
