Abstract

A theory is given of the resonant interaction between an ultrashort coherent light pulse and a semiconductor, which occurs when the pulse duration is less than the polarization or "phase memory" relaxation time. It is shown that, under certain conditions, a stationary 2π pulse can form. Numerical estimates of the velocity of propagation of a stable pulse are obtained for a typical semiconductor.

Influence of relaxation processes on coherence of twophoton interaction between light pulses and resonant media

I A Poluéktov, Yurii M Popov, V S Roĭtberg

Numerical integration of a system of equations for a resonant medium and a field is used in a study of the influence of the relaxation of the phase memory of this medium on its coherent two-photon interaction with a light pulse. It is shown that the principal coherent effects occur right up to pulse durations equal to the phase relaxation time.

Effect of relaxation processes on the coherent interaction between radiation and a two-level medium

Dmitrii I. Gruev

Numerical integration of a system of equations describing the coherent interaction between radiation and a two-level medium (e.g., a semiconductor) is employed to analyze the effect of relaxation processes on the energy characteristics and dynamics of radiation pulses of duration τpΣ T '2 (T '2 is the irreversible polarization relaxation time). It is shown that the interaction of these pulses with the medium is strongly dependent on their area on entry to the medium and the attenuation of the pulses as a result of relaxation processes decreases with increasing pulse input power. This may be utilized for probing the medium in the resonant absorption range for short polarization relaxation times, in solution 42.65.Gv.

Ultrashort Optical Pulses and Their Generation in Resonant Media (Scientific Summary)

Rostislav M. Arkhipov, Mikhail V. Arkhipov, A. A. Shimko +2 more

Our recent studies of methods for obtaining ultrashort light pulses and analysis of the impact of ultrashort optical pulses on classical and quantum micro-objects with the identification of the determining role of the degree of unipolarity of pulses (maximum for strictly unipolar pulses) in the efficiency of direct laser acceleration of charged particles and excitation of atoms and molecules have been reviewed. Special attention has been paid to the coherent mode locking regime in lasers, which is implemented when the laser pulse duration is less than the relaxation time of the working transition in media with resonance amplification and absorption (laser analog of the phenomenon of self-induced transparency). Experimental data on coherent mode locking in a titanium-sapphire laser with a cell with rubidium vapor at self-induced transparency in rubidium have been presented. The interaction of ultrashort pulses in resonant media has also been analyzed.

Theoretical study of resonant ultrashort-pulse propagation in semiconductors

A. Knorr, Rolf H. Binder, Markus Lindberg +1 more

Femtosecond-pulse propagation in resonantly excited semiconductors is investigated by numerically solving the semiconductor Maxwell-Bloch equations for plane waves. For excitation at the exciton resonance, it is shown that the pulse absorption exhibits a strongly nonlinear dependence on the input pulse area. Very long propagation distances for strong pulses are observed, but even when all dephasing processes have been neglected, no lossless propagation (self-induced transparency) was found. The influence of the electron-hole many-body effects, nonequilibrium carrier relaxation, and optical dephasing on the pulse-propagation dynamics is studied. The exchange interaction in the electron-hole plasma is shown to support large propagation distances. For excitation of the continuum states, the dependence of the absorption on the intensity of the input pulse is reduced due to the rapid carrier relaxation into quasiequilibrium distributions.

Harmonic generation in coherent two-photon interaction between high-power optical pulses and resonant media

I A Poluéktov, A. Nazarkin

A theoretical investigation is made of collinear propagation of high-power optical pulses through a medium under conditions of two-photon resonance ω 0 ± ω s ≈ ω 21 ( ω 0 and ω s are the pulse frequencies, ω 21 is the frequency of an atomic transition in the medium). It is assumed that the condition for coherent interaction τ 0 , τ s < T 2 is satisfied ( τ 0 and τ s are the pulse durations at the entrance, T 2 is the phase relaxation time of the medium). By means of numerical integration of equations for the fields and the medium, it is shown that efficient generation of the harmonics ω 1 = 2 ω 0 ± ω s , ω 2 = 2 ω s ± ω 0 is possible under short and ultrashort pulse conditions.

Frequency Modulation and Transient Effects in the Resonant Propagation of Coherent Light Pulses

Michael D. Crisp

A theoretical analysis of the propagation of near resonant and linearly chirped light pulses through a resonant medium is presented under the restriction that the pulses are far enough off resonance or weak enough so that they do not significantly alter the atomic populations. If the pulses are of duration comparable to or less than the phase memory time T(2) of the atoms, it is found that the transient response of the medium gives rise to amplitude-and phase-modulating effects. Analytic solutions are presented to describe the propagation of an off-resonant pulse which is very short compared with T(2) and an off-resonant rectangular pulse. The evolution of a Gaussian pulse having a positive linear chirp is studied numerically.
