Persistent currents and spin-charge separation in a one-dimensional Hubbard ring with side sites

Abstract

The persistent current and spin-charge separation are studied in a one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard ring with side sites connected to the even sites of the ring. At half filling, the persistent current is always paramagnetic and has a period of flux quantum. Away from half filling, as the onsite repulsion $U$ increases, the sign of the current may oscillate depending on the total number of electrons ${N}_{e}$ and the hopping $t$ between the ring site and the side site. For small hopping $t$, the number of electrons ${N}_{e}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ in the ring sites plays an important role in determining the sign of the current. In contrast to the 1D Hubbard model, a weak or a moderate $U$ can strongly enhance the persistent current while the hopping $t$ always suppresses the current. The study on the transmittance of the ring with two connected leads indicates that in the large $U$ and small $t$ case, the transmittance varies with a period $1∕{N}_{e}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ of a flux quantum, demonstrating a spin-charge separation in this system.

Persistent currents in the one-dimensional mesoscopic Hubbard ring

Bo-Bo Wei, Shi-Jian Gu, Hai‐Qing Lin

In this paper, we study persistent charge and spin currents in the ground state of the one-dimensional mesoscopic Hubbard ring with repulsive interaction based on its Bethe-ansatz solution. We find that the persistent charge current is suppressed by the on-site Coulomb interaction more significantly at half-filling than away from half-filling. As the system size increases the charge current decays exponentially as I ∼ L −1 e − L /ξ in the half-filling case and decays in a power law away from the half-filling case. We also find that the persistent spin current is suppressed by the on-site Coulomb interaction, and it decays algebraically as the system size increases both at half-filling and away from half-filling.

Persistent Currents in Interacting Systems: Role of the Spin

G. Bouzerar, Didier Poilblanc

Persistent currents flowing through disordered mesoscopic rings threaded by a magnetic flux are investigated. Models of fermions with on-site interactions (Hubbard model) or models of spinless fermions with nearest neighbor interactions are considered on 2D cylinders with twisted boundary conditions in one direction to account for a magnetic flux. Self-consistent Hartree-Fock methods are used to treat the electron-electron interaction beyond first order. We show that the second harmonic of the current (which is relevant in the diffusive regime) is strongly suppressed by the interaction in the case of spinless fermions while it is significantly enhanced in the Hubbard model. Our data also strongly suggest that the reduction (increase) of this harmonic is related to a strong increase (reduction) of the spatial fluctuations of the charge density.

Persistent currents in interacting electronic systems

G. Bouzerar, Didier Poilblanc

Persistent currents in disordered mesoscopic rings threaded by a magnetic flux are calculated using exact diagonalization methods in the one-dimensional (1D) case and self-consistent Hartree-Fock treatments for two dimensional (2D) systems. For multichannel systems, a comparative study between models of spinless or spinfull (Hubbard) fermions has been done. First, it is shown that a purely one-dimensional model can not reproduce the correct order of magnitude of the observed currents. For 2D systems, going beyond first order pertubative calculations, we show that the second harmonic of the current is {\it strongly suppressed} in the case of spinless fermion models but {\it significantly enhanced} for the Hubbard model. This reduction (resp. increase) of the second harmonic is related to a strong increase (resp. reduction) of the spacial charge density fluctuations. Our work underlines the important role of the spin degrees of freedom in the persistent currents.

Flux-driven charge and spin transport in a dimerized Hubbard ring with Fibonacci modulation

Souvik Roy, Soumya Ranjan Padhi, Tapan Mishra

We study quantum transport in a one-dimensional Hubbard ring with dimerized nearest-neighbor hoppings and a Fibonacci-modulated onsite potential. For non-interacting case our analysis reveals that at half-filling, the charge current along with the Drude weight decreases with increasing onsite potential when inter-cell hopping dominates over the intra-cell hopping, while for dominating intra-cell hopping it shows non-monotonic behavior with sharp peak at certain critical modulation strength, indicating enhanced transport. Moving away from half-filling gives rise to re-entrant features in both quantities at fillings associated with Fibonacci numbers. On the other hand, in spin-imbalanced systems, both spin and charge current shows multiple peaks and re-entrant behavior, tunable via hopping dimerization and filling. Including the on-site Hubbard interaction preserves the re-entrant behavior in current and moreover favors finite transport which is absent in the non-interacting ring. These results reveal rich interplay among Fibonacci modulated potential, electron fillings, hopping dimerization and interaction.

Features of spin-charge separation in the equilibrium conductance through finite rings

Julián Rincón, Armando A. Aligia, K. Hallberg

We calculate the conductance through rings with few sites $L$ described by the $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model, threaded by a magnetic flux $\ensuremath{\Phi}$ and weakly coupled to conducting leads at two arbitrary sites. The model can describe a circular array of quantum dots with large charging energy $U$ in comparison with the nearest-neighbor hopping $t$. We determine analytically the particular values of $\ensuremath{\Phi}$ for which a depression of the transmittance is expected as a consequence of spin-charge separation. We show numerically that the equilibrium conductance at zero temperature is depressed at those particular values of $\ensuremath{\Phi}$ for most systems, in particular at half filling, which might be easier to realize experimentally.
