Abstract

We investigate circular current in both ordered and disordered Hubbard quantum rings threaded by magnetic flux, employing exact diagonalization and the Hartree-Fock mean-field approach within the tight-binding framework. The influence of on-site and extended Hubbard interactions, disorder, and electron filling on the persistent current is systematically analyzed. To construct the full many-body Hamiltonian, we introduce a linear table formalism, which, to our knowledge, has been rarely used in this context. In ordered rings, the current decreases monotonically with increasing on-site repulsion, while the impact of the extended interaction depends strongly on the filling factor. At low filling, stronger extended interaction suppresses the current, whereas near half-filling, it enhances the current up to a critical ratio, half of the on-site strength, before reducing it. Disorder significantly modifies these behaviors, notably enhancing the current at less than quarter-filling with increasing extended interaction. The localization properties of eigenstates, examined via the inverse participation ratio, further support the crucial roles of filling and the interplay between on-site and extended interactions in governing persistent current.

Multiple Current Enhancement Regimes and Interaction Induced Re-entrant Transport in a Quasiperiodic Hubbard Ring with Antiferromagnetic Order

Souvik Roy, Ranjini Bhattacharya

We investigate persistent charge and spin currents in a one-dimensional quantum ring threaded by an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) flux, considering generalized Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) modulation with staggered onsite energies and antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering in both the noninteracting and interacting regimes, with the latter treated using a self-consistent Hartree-Fock mean field theory (MFT). At half filling, two distinct current-enhancement peaks emerge as the modulation strength increases, with quasiperiodic hopping modulation playing a crucial role in establishing the two-peak structure within a restricted parameter regime. Spin-resolved bond-current profiles reveal a switch in the dominant spin contribution between the two peaks, while the inverse participation ratio (IPR) and flux-dependent spin-resolved ground-state energies provide complementary insights into the spatial characteristics of the eigenstates and their spin-dependent flux sensitivity. At quarter filling, the spin current exhibits a single enhancement peak, in contrast to the two-peak response observed at half filling. The Hubbard interaction affects the two half-filled peaks differently: it suppresses the primary peak, whereas the secondary peak exhibits a nonmonotonic, re-entrant response, with the current recovering at finite interaction strength. The interacting results are further characterized through the Drude weight, and comparisons with exact diagonalization (ED) and density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations for a finite half-filled system support the reliability of the MFT description. Our findings elucidate how quasiperiodic modulation, AFM order, band filling, and electronic correlations collectively govern the magnitude and spin-resolved character of persistent currents, giving rise to multiple enhancement regimes and interaction-induced re-entrant behavior.

Persistent Currents in Interacting Systems: Role of the Spin

G. Bouzerar, Didier Poilblanc

Persistent currents flowing through disordered mesoscopic rings threaded by a magnetic flux are investigated. Models of fermions with on-site interactions (Hubbard model) or models of spinless fermions with nearest neighbor interactions are considered on 2D cylinders with twisted boundary conditions in one direction to account for a magnetic flux. Self-consistent Hartree-Fock methods are used to treat the electron-electron interaction beyond first order. We show that the second harmonic of the current (which is relevant in the diffusive regime) is {\it strongly suppressed} by the interaction in the case of spinless fermions while it is {\it significantly enhanced} in the Hubbard model. Our data also strongly suggest that the reduction (increase) of this harmonic is related to a strong increase (reduction) of the spacial fluctuations of the charge density.

Persistent currents and spin-charge separation in a one-dimensional Hubbard ring with side sites

W. Z. Wang

The persistent current and spin-charge separation are studied in a one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard ring with side sites connected to the even sites of the ring. At half filling, the persistent current is always paramagnetic and has a period of flux quantum. Away from half filling, as the onsite repulsion $U$ increases, the sign of the current may oscillate depending on the total number of electrons ${N}_{e}$ and the hopping $t$ between the ring site and the side site. For small hopping $t$, the number of electrons ${N}_{e}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ in the ring sites plays an important role in determining the sign of the current. In contrast to the 1D Hubbard model, a weak or a moderate $U$ can strongly enhance the persistent current while the hopping $t$ always suppresses the current. The study on the transmittance of the ring with two connected leads indicates that in the large $U$ and small $t$ case, the transmittance varies with a period $1∕{N}_{e}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ of a flux quantum, demonstrating a spin-charge separation in this system.

Persistent currents in interacting electronic systems

G. Bouzerar, Didier Poilblanc

Persistent currents in disordered mesoscopic rings threaded by a magnetic flux are calculated using exact diagonalization methods in the one-dimensional (1D) case and self-consistent Hartree-Fock treatments for two dimensional (2D) systems. For multichannel systems, a comparative study between models of spinless or spinfull (Hubbard) fermions has been done. First, it is shown that a purely one-dimensional model can not reproduce the correct order of magnitude of the observed currents. For 2D systems, going beyond first order pertubative calculations, we show that the second harmonic of the current is {\it strongly suppressed} in the case of spinless fermion models but {\it significantly enhanced} for the Hubbard model. This reduction (resp. increase) of the second harmonic is related to a strong increase (resp. reduction) of the spacial charge density fluctuations. Our work underlines the important role of the spin degrees of freedom in the persistent currents.

Persistent currents in multichannel interacting systems

G. Bouzerar, Didier Poilblanc

Persistent currents in disordered multichannel mesoscopic rings threaded by a magnetic flux are calculated using exact diagonalizations and self-consistent Hartree-Fock treatments of two-dimensional tori and cylinders of spinless interacting fermions. The validity of the Hartree-Fock approximation is controlled by a direct comparison with the exact results on small 4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4 clusters. The existence of a crossover value for the disorder parameter ${\mathit{W}}_{\mathit{c}}$ (depending on the electronic density and the system size) separating two different regimes is established. Decomposing the current I(\ensuremath{\varphi}) in terms of its fundamental harmonics, we find that, while the first harmonic is always enhanced by the interaction, the second harmonic is enhanced for W${\mathit{W}}_{\mathit{c}}$ and strongly suppressed otherwise. This effect is stronger as we increase the disorder.
