Abstract

Based on the master equation for the density matrix, the collective spontaneous emission of two A-type three-level atoms interacting with two modes of a quantum electromagnetic field in a finite- Q cavity is studied. The evolution of the emission intensity for each mode is found for the case where both atoms are initially in the excited state.

Spontaneous emission from an atom in a nonideal cavity: Application of a generalized master equation

R.W.F. van der Plank, L.G. Suttorp

The decay of an excited two-level atom in a cavity with mirrors of finite transmittivity is studied with the help of a generalized multimode master equation that has been established recently. The time evolution of the decaying atom is obtained by accounting for the interaction with infinitely many quasimodes. The analytical and numerical results are compared with those of the standard multimode master equation and of a universe-mode approach. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Dynamics of several two-level atoms in a one-mode cavity

P. Schwendimann, A. Quattropani

The dynamics of few two-level atoms interacting with one cavity mode is described in master equation formalism. Two different configurations are considered: a transient one with all atoms initially in the excited state and a stationary one where a coherent pump acts on either the atoms or the cavity mode. Superradiance, resonant scattering and switching between a low and a high emission state are considered. Cooperation and decoherence as well as the statistics of the emitted radiation field in both cases are discussed.

Spontaneous emission of light from atoms: the model

P. Marecki, N. Szpak

We investigate (non-relativistic) atomic systems interacting with quantum electromagnetic field (QEF). The resulting model describes spontaneous emission of light from a two-level atom surrounded by various initial states of the QEF. We assume that the quantum field interacts with the atom via the standard, minimal-coupling Hamiltonian, with the A2 term neglected. We also assume that there will appear at most single excitations (photons). By conducting the analysis on a general level we allow for an arbitrary initial state of the QEF (which can be for instance: the vacuum, the ground state in a cavity, or the squeezed state). We derive a Volterra-type equation which governs the time evolution of the amplitude of the excited state. The two-point function of the initial state of the QEF, integrated with a combination of atomic wavefunctions, forms the kernel of this equation.
