Abstract

In this paper, we propose a method for the generation of higher-dimensional modal entanglement through a type II spontaneous parametric down-conversion process using a three-waveguide directional coupler in a periodically poled lithium niobate substrate. We show that by a proper design, it is possible to achieve an output state of two photons occupying three different spatial modes. The advantage of using such waveguide structure is its flexibility and the design space availability to achieve desired characteristics of the photon pairs generated in the down-conversion process.

Generation of modal- and path-entangled photons using a domain-engineered integrated optical waveguide device

Jasleen Lugani, Sankalpa Ghosh, Krishnan Thyagarajan

Integrated optical devices are expected to play a promising role in the field of quantum information science and technology. In this paper we propose a scheme for the generation of nondegenerate, copolarized, modal, and path-entangled photons using a directional coupler and an asymmetric $\mathsf{Y}$-coupler geometry in type-0 phase-matched domain-engineered lithium niobate (LN) waveguide. The nonlinearity in LN is tailored in such a way that quasi-phase-matching conditions for two different spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes are obeyed simultaneously, leading to a modal and path-entangled state at the output. Assuming typical values of various parameters, we show, through numerical simulations, that an almost maximally entangled state is achievable over a wide range of waveguide parameters. For the degenerate case, the proposed scheme gives a NOON state for $N$ $=$ 2. The generated entangled photon pairs should have potential applications in quantum information schemes and also in quantum metrology. By appropriate domain engineering and component designing, the idea can be further extended to generate hyperentangled and two-photon multipath-entangled states, which may have further applications in quantum computation protocols.

Modal, spectral, and polarization entanglement in guided-wave parametric down-conversion

Mohammed F. Saleh, Bahaa E. A. Saleh, Malvin Carl Teich

We examine the modal, spectral, and polarization entanglement properties of photon pairs generated in a nonlinear periodically poled two-mode waveguide (one-dimensional planar or two-dimensional circular) via nondegenerate spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Any of the possible degrees of freedom---mode number, frequency, or polarization---can be used to distinguish the down-converted photons while the others serve as attributes of entanglement. Distinguishing the down-converted photons based on their mode numbers enables us to efficiently generate spectral or polarization entanglement that is either narrowband or broadband. On the other hand, when the generated photons are distinguished by their frequencies in a type-0 process, modal entanglement turns out to be an efficient alternative to polarization entanglement. Moreover, modal entanglement in type-II down-conversion may be used to generate a doubly entangled state in frequency and polarization.

Generation of polarization-entangled photons using type-II doubly periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides

Krishna Thyagarajan, Jasleen Lugani, Sankalpa Ghosh +5 more

In this paper, we address the issue of the generation of nondegenerate cross-polarization-entangled photon pairs using type-II periodically poled lithium niobate. We show that, by an appropriate engineering of the quasi-phase-matching grating, it is possible to simultaneously satisfy the conditions for two spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes, namely, ordinary pump photon down conversion to either extraordinary signal and ordinary idler paired photons or to ordinary signal and extraordinary idler paired photons. In contrast to single type-II phase matching, these two processes, when enabled together, can lead to the direct production of cross-polarization-entangled states for nondegenerate signal and idler wavelengths. Such a scheme should be of great interest in applications requiring polarization-entangled nondegenerate paired photons with, for instance, one of the entangled photons at an appropriate wavelength being used for local operation or for quantum storage in an atomic ensemble and the other one at the typical wavelength of 1550 nm for propagation through an optical fiber.

Modal phase-matching in thin-film lithium niobate waveguides for efficient generation of entangled photon pairs

Jiacheng Liu, Jia-Chen Duan, Pingyu Zhu +6 more

Thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) waveguides have emerged as a pivotal platform for on-chip spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC), serving as a crucible for the generation of entangled photon pairs. The periodic poling of TFLN, while capable of generating high-efficiency SPDC, demands intricate fabrication processes that can be onerous in terms of scalability and manufacturability. In this work, we introduce a novel approach to the generation of entangled photon pairs via SPDC within TFLN waveguides, harnessing the principles of modal phase-matching (MPM). To address the challenge of efficiently exciting pump light typically in a higher-order mode, we have engineered a mode converter that couples two asymmetrically dimensioned waveguides. This converter adeptly transforms the fundamental mode into a higher-order mode, demonstrating a conversion loss of 1.55 dB at 785 nm with a 3 dB bandwidth exceeding 30 nm. Subsequently, we have showcased the device's capabilities by characterizing the pair generation rate (PGR), coincidences-to-accidentals ratio (CAR), and spectral profile of the entangled photon source. Our findings present a simplified and versatile method for the on-chip generation of entangled photon sources, which may pave the way for the application in the realms of quantum information processing and communication technologies.
