Intensity of a linear absorption resonance of atoms trapped in an anharmonic potential

Abstract

For atoms trapped in an anharmonic potential, a resonance of homogeneous width occurs at the center of an absorption line in the linear approximation with respect to the field. Quantum kinetic equations are derived for an atom trapped in an arbitrary potential and these are used to study the resonance intensity as a function of anharmonic corrections to the expansion of the potential near the bottom of the well.

Intensity of a linear resonance of the absorption by trapped particles

E. V. Baklanov, Е. А. Титов

A study is made of the intensity of a resonance with homogeneous width, which appears at the center of an absorption line for particles trapped in a potential well. A calculation is made of the dependence of the amplitude of the resonance on geometric factors (such as the orientation of a light beam relative to the symmetry axes of the well) and on the anharmonicity.

Saturation of the absorption of light by an atom captured in a trap

Е. А. Титов

A nonlinear (in respect of the field) correction is found to the cross section for the absorption of light by a trapped atom. When the line half-width is much less than the frequency of vibrations of an atom in a trap, this correction is smaller compared with an untrapped atom by a factor which is equal to the Doppler width divided by the frequency of the atomic vibrations.

Two-photon absorption line profile of ions captured in a trap

E. V. Baklanov, Е. А. Титов, V. A. Ulybin

The two-photon absorption line profile in a standing wave field is found for particles captured in a three-dimensional trap. When the transverse dimension of the optical beam is comparable with the size of the trap, transit broadening is eliminated and the line profile is that of a resonance having the homogeneous width. For optical beams of small dimensions, homogeneous-width resonances occur in the line profile if the frequency of the ion oscillations in the trap is greater than the homogeneous width.

Stimulated Raman scattering by particles captured in a trap

E. V. Baklanov, Е. А. Титов, V. P. Chebotaev

Particles captured in a trap are considered in the linear approximation with respect to a probe field. A resonance, having the width of a forbidden transition, is predicted for the stimulated Raman forward and backward scattering line profiles.

Ion crystals in anharmonic traps

S. R. Bastin, Tony E. Lee

There is currently intensive research into creating a large-scale quantum computer with trapped ions. It is well known that for a linear ion crystal in a harmonic potential, the ions near the center are more closely spaced compared to the ions near the ends. This is problematic as the number of ions increases. Here, we consider a linear ion crystal in an anharmonic potential that is purely quartic in position. We find that the ions are more evenly spaced compared to the harmonic case. We develop a variational approach to calculate the properties of the ground state. We also characterize the zigzag transition in an anharmonic potential.

Intensity-induced quenching of absorption of diatomic molecules in two near-resonance laser fields

Munir Hasan Nayfeh, Kevin King, G. Barry Hillard +2 more

The interaction of a diatomic molecule with two near-resonance laser fields is investigated with the use of a one-dimensional anharmonic oscillator model. Our study shows that, over a certain range of intensity of one of the laser fields, induced quenching of the absorption takes place.
