Quantum theory of a two-mode laser with coupled transitions

Abstract

The quantum-statistical properties of the optical field of a two-mode laser with two coupled transitions have been studied by means of a generalization of the Scully and Lamb theory. The photon number distribution and the mode intensity distribution are obtained in the steady state for a system of homogeneously broadened atoms in resonance with the laser field. It is shown that the mode-coupling constant $\ensuremath{\xi}$ is unity and that near threshold the results of earlier treatments are recovered. Furthermore, it is shown that certain limit measures for the relative intensity fluctuations predicted by the semiclassical Fokker-Planck treatments based on the third-order theory are valid even in the limit of arbitrarily high gain levels.

Off-resonant operation of a double-transition single-mode laser

Sun Son-gen, Xiao-shen Li, Nianyu Bei

Scully and Lamb's quantum theory of the laser is extended to deal with nonresonant operation of a single-mode laser in a homogeneously broadened medium consisting of three-level atoms. In the case of weak-field intensity, the master equation and operation characters such as the threshold condition, the average photon number, and the half-width of the photon distribution are obtained and discussed.

Quantum effects in the single-mode laser

Federico Casagrande, Luigi A. Lugiato

The single-mode laser model as formulated by Haken and co-workers is considered. Within the approximation which takes into account only the interaction (at all orders in the coupling constant) between the mode and the single atoms, this model leads to a linear time-evolution equation for the Glauber quasiprobability distribution $P(\ensuremath{\beta},{\ensuremath{\beta}}^{*},t)$ of the field mode, containing derivatives of all orders in $\ensuremath{\beta}$ and ${\ensuremath{\beta}}^{*}$. This equation is solved exactly in the stationary situation. Thus the quantum effects due to the terms with derivatives of order higher than the second one are fully taken into account. It is shown that these terms have a shrinking effect on the stationary distribution above threshold, counteracting the broadening effect due to the second-derivative term. The photon and photoelectron distributions are given. Exact relations are deduced, which allow the calculation of all the moments of the steady-state distribution from the first one. This distribution is compared with the stationary solutions of Risken's equation, of P. Mandel's equation, and with the stationary distribution deduced by Weidlich, Risken, and Haken. The connection with the single-mode laser theory of Scully and Lamb is analyzed in the high-intensity region. The complete Scully-Lamb master equation is translated into the Glauber representation, yielding a linear equation for $P(\ensuremath{\beta},{\ensuremath{\beta}}^{*},t)$ containing derivatives of all orders in $\ensuremath{\beta}$ and ${\ensuremath{\beta}}^{*}$. Suitably connecting the parameters $A$, $B$, and $C$ of the Scully-Lamb equation with the parameters of the model of Haken and co-workers, it is shown that there is perfect agreement between the strong-signal Scully-Lamb steady-state distribution and that of Weidlich, Risken, and Haken for all values of the pump parameter.

The quantum theory of a three-mode laser

Xiao-shen Li

The density operator theory and method are used to extend the fully quantum-mechanical theory of the two-level single-mode laser advanced by Sargent, Scully and Lamb (1974) to the homogeneously broadened four-level atomic system so that the master equation of the three-mode laser operation for this system is obtained. The steady-state operation characteristics of the laser in different cases are discussed and compared. Especially, pictorial comparison and discussion of the quantum-statistical properties of the laser are carried out by means of numerical computation. Meanwhile some experimental results obtained by Otsuka (1978) are qualitatively explained.

Quantum theory of a two-photon laser

Shi-Yao Zhu, Xiao-shen Li

A quantum theory of a two-photon laser in a three-level atomic system of the cascade type is presented starting from an original microscopic Hamiltonian. The master equation of the laser operation is derived by using the method of Scully and Lamb [Phys. Rev. A 159, 208 (1967)] for a single-mode laser containing a two-level medium. The photon-number distribution of the laser is studied in detail. The curve of the distribution may have a two-peak structure. One of the peaks located at the origin comes from the single-photon process and reflects the thermal property of the laser, while another comes from the two-photon process and reflects the coherent property of the laser. We cannot find an exact criterion for the threshold of the two-photon laser. The two-photon laser can approximately be considered as a coherent state for certain values of A/C, which can even be much smaller than the threshold for the nonresonant single-mode laser in a two-level system, but it is much larger than the threshold for the resonant one.

Quantum theory of a laser with injected atomic coherence: Quantum noise quenching via nonlinear processes

Ning Lü, János A. Bergou

A quantum theory of a two-level single-mode laser with injected atomic coherence is developed by generalizing the Scully-Lamb laser theory to a form appropriate for the analysis of a coherently pumped laser. We assume that the active atoms are prepared initially in a coherent superposition of the upper and lower levels, and we derive the master equation for the field density operator by treating the interaction of the laser field with many active atoms simultaneously. It is shown that the photon-number distribution can be exactly Poissonian. The laser operation is analyzed in terms of the Fokker-Planck equation for the laser field. Both the intensity and phase diffusion coefficients are phase sensitive and, for stable laser operation, become much smaller than those of an ordinary laser. Consequently, the injected atomic coherence reduces both the photon-number noise and phase noise simultaneously. The intensity diffusion coefficient can vanish exactly, and at the same time the phase diffusion coefficient can become very small. This leads to spontaneous-emission noise quenching in the photon-number distribution, and the laser field can become very close to a coherent state. A scheme to generate the proper form of the initial atomic coherence necessary for the quantum noise quenching is proposed and analyzed.

QUANTUM THEORY OF TWO-PHOTON MICROMASER AND LASER

IMRANA, ASHRAF

In this dissertation, we study the quantum theory of two-photon micromaser and laser. To begin with, we study the photon statistics of the two-photon micromaser by considering the interaction of a quantized single-mode field with an effective two-level atom through intermediate states. We present an exact solution for the photon distribution function and study the behaviour of mean photon number and photon number fluctuations. A periodic "collapse" and "revival" type behaviour is predicted. We find that the photon number fluctuations exhibits a periodic sub-Poissonian behaviour with respect to the interaction time. We then discuss the photon statistics of two-photon laser and derive an exact expression for photon distribution function. We find that photon distribution function for two-photon laser is wider than the Poisson distribution function. We also calculate the natural line-width of a two-level two-photon laser by using a Fokker-Planck approach. It is shown that, apart from a constant, the gain contribution to the laser linewidth is equal to the two-photon gain parameter and is independent of the mean number of photons in the field. Finally, we study the two-photon transitions in multi-level atomic system. In this case first we discuss the photon statistics of three-level two-photon micromaser and laser. Then we consider the two-photon transition in four-level atomic system by considering dye laser as an example.
