Quantum theory of a laser with injected atomic coherence: Quantum noise quenching via nonlinear processes

Abstract

A quantum theory of a two-level single-mode laser with injected atomic coherence is developed by generalizing the Scully-Lamb laser theory to a form appropriate for the analysis of a coherently pumped laser. We assume that the active atoms are prepared initially in a coherent superposition of the upper and lower levels, and we derive the master equation for the field density operator by treating the interaction of the laser field with many active atoms simultaneously. It is shown that the photon-number distribution can be exactly Poissonian. The laser operation is analyzed in terms of the Fokker-Planck equation for the laser field. Both the intensity and phase diffusion coefficients are phase sensitive and, for stable laser operation, become much smaller than those of an ordinary laser. Consequently, the injected atomic coherence reduces both the photon-number noise and phase noise simultaneously. The intensity diffusion coefficient can vanish exactly, and at the same time the phase diffusion coefficient can become very small. This leads to spontaneous-emission noise quenching in the photon-number distribution, and the laser field can become very close to a coherent state. A scheme to generate the proper form of the initial atomic coherence necessary for the quantum noise quenching is proposed and analyzed.

Nonlinear theory of a two-photon correlated-spontaneous-emission laser: A coherently pumped two-level–two-photon laser

Ning Lü, Fang-Xiao Zhao, János A. Bergou

We develop a nonlinear theory of a two-photon correlated-spontaneous-emission laser (CEL) by using an effective interaction Hamiltonian for a two-level system coupled by a two-photon transition. Assuming that the active atoms are prepared initially in a coherent superposition of two atomic levels involved in the two-photon transition, we derive a master equation for the field-density operator by using our quantum theory for coherently pumped lasers. The steady-state properties of the two-photon CEL are studied by converting the field master equation into a Fokker-Planck equation for the antinormal-ordering Q representation of the field-density operator. Because of the injected atomic coherence, the drift and diffusion coefficients become phase sensitive. This leads to laser phase locking and an extra two-photon CEL gain. The laser field can build up from a vacuum in the no-population-inversion region, in contrast to an ordinary two-photon laser for which triggering is needed. We find an approximate steady-state solution of the Q representation for the laser field, which consists of two identical peaks of elliptical type. We calculate the phase variance and, for any given mean photon number, obtain the minimum variance in the phase quadrature as a function of the initial atomic variables. Squeezing of the quantum noise in the phase quadrature is found and it exhibits the following features: (1) it is possible only when the laser intensity is smaller than a certain value; (2) it becomes most significant for small mean photon number, which is achievable in the no-population-inversion region; and (3) a maximum of 50% squeezing can be asymptotically approached in the small laser intensity limit. As a by-product we also study the ordinary two-photon laser and find, e.g., photon-number variance and laser linewidth.

Quantum theory of a noninversion laser with injected atomic coherence

János A. Bergou, Pál Bogár

A quantum theory of a \ensuremath{\Lambda}-type three-level single-mode quantum-beat laser with injected atomic coherences and with an external microwave field, which coherently drives the lower two nearly degenerate levels, is studied. A master equation for the field-density operator and the photon statistics is derived. The laser operation is analyzed in terms of the coefficients of the Fokker-Planck equation of the laser field. Noninversion lasing is found in both cases: without and with injected atomic coherences. At the same time, in the latter case large quantum-noise reduction is found, and for particular initial parameter choices the laser field is very near to a coherent state with exactly Poissonian photon-number distribution and near-Poissonian phase distribution.

Quantum theory of bistable inversionless lasers

Guo Qin Ge, L. M. Chen

A fully quantum-mechanical theory of bistable inversionless lasers is developed by generalizing the Scully-Lamb laser theory to this kind of laser systems. By converting the quantum master equation of the system into a Fokker-Planck equation, we obtain the steady-state properties and the fluctuation properties of the laser field for both coherently and incoherently injected atomic systems. It is shown that both the intensity and phase fluctuations of the laser system with coherent atomic injection are reduced corresponding to their counterpart of the incoherent atomic injection. The phase noise of bistable inversionless lasers can be quenched down to the vacuum-noise level for both atomic injections.

Quantum theory of two-photon correlated-spontaneous-emission lasers: Exact atom-field interaction Hamiltonian approach

Ning Lü, Shi-Yao Zhu

A quantum theory of two-photon correlated-spontaneous-emission lasers (CEL's) is developed, starting from the exact atom-field interaction Hamiltonian for cascade three-level atoms interacting with a single-mode radiation field. We consider the situation where the active atoms are prepared initially in a coherent superposition of three atomic levels and derive a master equation for the field-density operator by using a quantum theory for coherently pumped lasers. The master equation is transformed into a Fokker-Planck equation for the antinormal-ordering Q function. The drift coefficients of the Fokker-Planck equation enable us to study the steady-state operation of the two-photon CEL's analytically. We have studied both resonant two-photon CEL for which there is no threshold, and off-resonant two-photon CEL for which there exists a threshold. In both cases the initial atomic coherences provide phase locking, and squeezing in the phase quadrature of the field is found. The off-resonant two-photon CEL can build up from a vacuum when its linear gain is larger than the cavity loss (even without population inversion). Maximum squeezing is found in the no-population-inversion region with the laser intensities far below saturation in both cases, which are more than 90% for the resonant two-photon CEL and nearly 50% for the off-resonant one. Approximate steady-state Q functions are obtained for the resonant two-photon CEL and, in certain circumstances, for the off-resonant one.

Correlated-emission laser: the effect of injected atomic coherence and quantum-noise quenching for Hermitian operators

Ning Lü

We develop a quantum theory of a correlated-emission laser (CEL) with injected atomic coherence for arbitrary initial atomic conditions and arbitrary atomic decay rates. The effect of initial atomic coherence on the CEL is studied. It is shown that, with a proper form of the initial atomic coherence and equal atomic decay rates between the two upper levels of V-type three-level lasing atoms, the diffusion coefficients for the relative phase and the relative amplitude of two laser modes can vanish under certain conditions. These conditions, plus equal cavity-loss rates, lead to the vanishing of the normally ordered variances (quantum-noise quenching) of Hermitian operators corresponding to the relative phase and the relative amplitude.

Quantum theory of two-mode lasing without inversion with injected atomic coherence

János A. Bergou, Pál Bogár, Mark S. Hillery

We present the quantum theory of a two-mode Lambda-type three level quantum-beat laser with injected atomic coherences. The lower two levels are coupled by an external classical field. The master equation and the Fokker–Planck equation are derived. Phases of the two modes are locked to a value depending on the phase of the external field, the phase of the injected coherence and the population of the lower two levels. Lasing without inversion and without threshold is found for both modes with and without injected coherences. Applying the appropriate initial atomic coherences one can switch intensities between the two modes, as well as bifurcation and multiple branching can be found when coherences among all levels are present. It is also possible to find phase bistability at a fixed intensity for one of the two modes, when high pump is applied. Strong intensity and phase noise reduction can be found in one of the modes at the expense of increased noises in the other one. Near Poissonian noise can be achieved.
