Abstract

By employing an adaptive time-dependent density-matrix-renormalization-group method, the spin-flip process of polarons is investigated in a polymer chain with magnetic impurities. Being driven by an external electric field, a polaron carrying both spin 1/2 and charge +/-e moves at a constant speed in the polymer chain. When the polaron passes through a specific site, which couples to a magnetic impurity via spin-exchange interaction, a spin-flip process is observed if its spin is antiparallel to the impurity spin. Our results show that the spin-flip probability is enhanced by the on-site Coulomb interaction and increases with increase in the spin-exchange integral. Additionally, some possible applications of the spin-state swap between the polaron and the impurity are discussed.

Correlation effects on the scattering of soliton pairs in conjugated polymers

Hui Chao Zhao, Yuguang Chen, Yonghong Yan +2 more

\n\nBy employing an adaptive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group (t-DMRG) method, we investigate the electron-electron correlation effects on the inelastic-scattering processes of oppositely charged-soliton anti-soliton pairs in conjugated polymers under the influence of an external electric field. The simulations are performed based on the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model modified to include electron-electron interactions and an external electric field. The percent yield of product is numerically calculated by a projection method. Our results show that the on-site Coulomb interaction is of fundamental importance and favors the recombination between the pairs of soliton. Additionally, the effects of external electric field and nearest-neighbor electron-electron interaction on the collision processes are also discussed.\n

Real Time Dynamics of Hole Propagation in Strongly Correlated Conjugated Molecular Chains: A time-dependent DMRG Study

Tirthankar Dutta, S. Ramasesha

In this paper, we address the role of electron-electron interactions on the velocities of spin and charge transport in one-dimensional systems typified by conjugated polymers. We employ the Hubbard model to model electron-electron interactions. The recently developed technique of time dependent Density Matrix Renormalization Group (tdDMRG) is used to follow the spin and charge evolution in an initial wavepacket described by a hole doped in the ground state of the neutral system. We find that the charge and spin velocities are different in the presence of correlations and are in accordance with results from earlier studies; the charge and spin move together in the noninteracting picture while interaction slows down only the spin velocity. We also note that dimerization of the chain only weakly affects these velocities.

Interaction between impurities and solitons in quasi one-dimensional spin-Peierls systems

David Augier, P. Hansen, Didier Poilblanc +2 more

The role of the spin-phonon coupling in spin-Peierls chains doped with spin-0 or spin-1 impurities is investigated by various numerical methods such as exact diagonalization, quantum Monte Carlo simulations and Density Matrix Renormalization Group. Various treatments of the lattice, in a fully quantum mechanical way, classically in the adiabatic approximation or using a fixed three-dimensional dimerization pattern are compared. For an isolated chain, strong bonds form between the two spin-1/2 sites next to the impurity site, leading to the appearance of magneto-elastic solitons. We also show that these excitations do not bind to spin-0 impurities but are weakly attracted by spin-1 impurities. However, the interchain elastic coupling generates an effective confining potential at the non-magnetic impurity site which can lead to the formation of soliton-impurity bound states. We also predict that a soliton and an antisoliton bound to two impurities on the same chain can annihilate each other when the separation between the impurities is smaller than a critical value depending on the interchain elastic constant.

Spin- S impurities with XXZ anisotropy in a spin- 12 Heisenberg chain

Ayushi Singhania, Masahiro Kadosawa, Y. Ohta +2 more

We study the effect of anisotropy of spin-$S$ impurities on an antiferromagnetic SU(2) Heisenberg chain. The magnetic impurities are assumed to have an XXZ-type anisotropic exchange with their neighboring sites. First, using density-matrix renormalization group technique, we examine spin-spin correlation function, instability of N\'eel order, and local spin susceptibility in the presence of a single spin-$S$ impurity. Based on the results, we find that the types of spin-$S$ impurities are classified into two groups: (i) nonmagnetic and $S=1$ impurities enhance only short-range antiferromagnetic correlation and (ii) $S=\frac{1}{2}$ and $S>1$ impurities can, in contrast, stabilize a long-range N\'eel order in the disordered SU(2) Heisenberg chain. Then, we focus on the case of $S=\frac{1}{2}$ impurity as a representative of (ii) and investigate the evolution of some experimentally observable quantities such as magnetization, specific heat, and magnetic susceptibility, as a function of concentration and XXZ anisotropy strength of the impurity. We confirm that the N\'eel order is induced in the bulk spin chain in the presence of finite amount of easy-axis XXZ $S=\frac{1}{2}$ impurities. Furthermore, we recover some of the aforementioned features using cluster mean-field theory, which allows us to present results on experimentally accessible quantities at finite temperatures. Interestingly, in the presence of uniform magnetic field, the total magnetization exhibits a pseudogap behavior for low values of applied field. We also discuss the dependence of NMR spectrum on various XXZ impurities and identify that the spin state of Co impurity in ${\mathrm{SrCu}}_{0.99}{\mathrm{Co}}_{0.01}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ is $S=\frac{3}{2}$.

Density-matrix renormalization-group studies of the alternating Hubbard model

Hanbin Pang, Shoudan Liang

Discrepancies between the single-particle band structure and the exact many-particle behavior are particularly striking in one-dimensional systems. The one-dimensional alternating Hubbard model is especially interesting as a nontrivial model for conjugated polymer chains, such as polyacetelyne. We study this model for chains of 60 sites using the density-matrix renormalization-group method. We obtain the first electronic and magnetic excited-state energies at half filling as a function of an alternating hopping parameter and on-site electron-electron interaction. We also study the effect of the interaction on the dimerization and discuss its relation to the charge gap and spin triplet gap. In addition, we calculate the local spin and charge densities of some excited states, which manifest a clear crossover from bandlike to strongly correlated behavior.

Non-equilibrium quantum dynamics of the magnetic Anderson model

D Becker, S Weiss, Michael Thorwart +1 more

We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of a spinful single-orbital quantum dot with an incorporated quantum mechanical spin-1/2 magnetic impurity. Due to the spin degeneracy, double occupancy is allowed, and Coulomb interaction together with the exchange coupling of the magnetic impurity influence the dynamics. By extending the iterative summation of real-time path integrals (ISPI) to this coupled system, we monitor the time-dependent non-equilibrium current and the impurity spin polarization to determine features of the time-dependent non-equilibrium dynamics. We particulary focus on the deep quantum regime, where all time and energy scales are of the same order of magnitude and no small parameter is available. We observe a significant influence of the non-equilibrium decay of the impurity spin polarization both in the presence and in the absence of Coulomb interaction. The exponential relaxation is faster for larger bias voltages, electron–impurity interactions and temperatures. We show that the exact relaxation rate deviates from the corresponding perturbative result. In addition, we study in detail the impurity's back action on the charge current and find a reduction of the stationary current for increasing coupling to the impurity. Moreover, our approach allows us to systematically distinguish mean-field Coulomb and impurity effects from the influence of quantum fluctuations and flip-flop scattering, respectively. In fact, we find a local maximum of the current for a finite Coulomb interaction due to the presence of the impurity.
