Generalized perturbation theory for quantum oscillators

Abstract

The time dependence of the quantum statistical density operator for oscillator systems (open or closed) is formulated within a generalized time-dependent perturbation theory. The new and more convergent perturbation series is also applicable to any boson system in nonequilibrium.

Evolution of the Density Matrix of Large Systems

Lesser Blum

The time dependent perturbation series for the density matrix is shown to be equivalent to an integral equation. This integral equation is given in the form of a series in the coupling parameter λ, which is allways convergent when t →∞. The terms of this series can be represented by time retarded operators.

PERTURBATION-THEORY RULES FOR COMPUTING THE SELF-ENERGY OPERATOR IN QUANTUM STATISTICAL MECHANICS

Gordon Baym, Andrew M. Sessler

Convenient rules are given for the general term in the time-independent perturbation-theory expansion for the self-energy operator of quantum statistical mechanics. The rules are derived by starting from the usual formalism involving time-dependent Green's functions.

Nonequilibrium open-system theory for continuous photodetection processes: A probability-density-functional description

Masahito Ueda

A nonequilibrium open-system theory for continuous photodetection processes is developed using a probability-density functional combined with the path-integral technique. Nonunitary time evolution of the system-environment density operator due to measurement back action and continuous measurement is exactly described for three familiar photodetection processes. New exact photocounting formulas are obtained for these three processes; in particular, Mollow's photocounting formula is generalized for a nonequilibrium open system. Distinctive features between a closed system and an open system are presented; for example, the probability distribution for the number of counts is shown to contain complete information about photoelectron statistics for a closed system, whereas it does not for an open system. The obtained formulas are applied to photodetection of a single-mode photon field that interacts linearly with a pump source consisting of a single harmonic oscillator and a reservoir consisting of an infinite number of harmonic oscillators. In the former case, increasing the ratio of the source-field coupling constant to the field-detector coupling constant causes the photon field to cross over from a closed attenuating field to an open stationary field. In the latter case, a quantum-mechanical fluctuation-dissipation theorem in the continuous photodetection context is discussed.

Quantum mechanics in general quantum systems (I): Exact solution

An Min Wang

Starting from our idea of combining the Feynman path integral spirit and the Dyson series kernel, we find an explicit and general form of time evolution operator that is a $c$-number function and a power series of perturbation including all order approximations in the unperturbed Hamiltonian representation. Based on it, we obtain an exact solution of the Schrödinger equation in general quantum systems independent of time. Comparison of our exact solution with the existed perturbation theory makes some features and significance of our exact solution clear. The conclusions expressly indicate that our exact solution is obviously consistent with the usual time-independent perturbation theory at any order approximation, it explicitly calculates out the expanding coefficients of the unperturbed state in the non-perturbation method, and it fully solves the recurrence equation of the expansion coefficients of final state in the unperturbed Hamiltonian representation from a view of time-dependent perturbation theory. At the same time, the exact solution of the von Neumann equation is also given. Our results can be thought of as theoretical developments of quantum dynamics, and are helpful for understanding the dynamical behavior and related subjects of general quantum systems in both theory and application. Our exact solution, together with its sequence studies on perturbation theory [An Min Wang, quant-ph/0611217] and open system dynamics [An Min Wang, quant-ph/0601051] can be used to establish the foundation of theoretical formulism of quantum mechanics in general quantum systems. Further applications of our exact solution to quantum theory can be expected.

Generalized Perturbation Theory in Operator Form

Hans Primas

It is proposed to formulate any quantum mechanical perturbation theory in operator form and to take advantage of the fact that such a theory can be completely formulated in the domain of a Lie algebra. The concept of a T- operator is generalized and used to compose a solution of a complicated quantum mechanical problem from subproblems connected therein. (R.E.U.)
