Abstract

In a Monte Carlo simulation, we feedback with conditional measurements and a multiple-step spontaneous parametric downconversion process to generate number-squeezed photonic states with sub-Poissonian variance. A 12 photon state is demonstrated with a success rate of 30%.

Photon number squeezing in repeated parametric downconversion with ancillary photon-number measurements

Boris L. Glebov, Jingyun Fan, Alan L. Migdall

We present a realistic numerical simulation of a source of number-squeezed photon states employing a cavity-based parametric downconversion (PDC) process. A cavity containing the PDC medium is pumped repeatedly. The cavity recycles only one of the PDC output modes, allowing it to be amplified with each subsequent pump pulse. A photon number resolved (PNR) measurement is made on the other PDC output mode following each pump pulse. Once the PNR measurements indicate that the target number of photons has accumulated in the cavity, the pumping is stopped and the resulting photon state is released. The photon number uncertainty in the resulting state is ~3 dB below that of a mean-equivalent coherent state and furthermore the probability of generating the target photon number is similarly increased.

We show through Monte Carlo simulation, under realistic experimental conditions, that a system composed of just a few repetitive spontaneous parametric downconversion processes can approximate an on-demand single-photon source with nearly deterministic single-photon emission.

Generation of N-photon phase squeezed states by interference of downconverted photon pairs with weak coherent light

We show that the interference between photon pairs emitted by spontaneous parametric downconversion and coherent laser light generates a class of N-photon phase squeezed states characterized by a single squeezing parameter given by N times the ratio of the downconversion amplitude and the squared coherent amplitude.

Generation of Pure-State Single-Photon Wavepackets by Conditional Preparation Based on Spontaneous Parametric Downconversion

Alfred B. U’Ren, Christine Silberhorn, Reinhard K. Erdmann +4 more

We study the conditional preparation of single photons based on parametric downconversion, where the detection of one photon from a given pair heralds the existence of a single photon in the conjugate mode. We derive conditions on the modal characteristics of the photon pairs, which ensure that the conditionally prepared single photons are quantum-mechanically pure. We propose specific experimental techniques that yield photon pairs ideally suited for single-photon conditional preparation.

Generation of sub-Poissonian non-Gaussian states from multimode twin beams by photon-number-resolving detectors

We generate sub-Poissonian non-Gaussian conditional states from pulsed multimode twin beams by measuring with photon-number-resolving detectors. Links among twin-beam non-classicality and the properties of the conditional states are discussed.
