Abstract

We show that the interference between photon pairs emitted by spontaneous parametric downconversion and coherent laser light generates a class of N-photon phase squeezed states characterized by a single squeezing parameter given by N times the ratio of the downconversion amplitude and the squared coherent amplitude.

Induced coherence without induced emission resulting in nonlocal interference

X. Y. Zou, L. J. Wang, L. Mandeļ

Although induced coherence is generally associated with induced or stimulated emission, in the process of spontaneous parametric downconversion of light induced coherence can be generated on its own. This is demonstrated in an experiment in which the signal beams from two coherently pumped downconverters come together and interfere whenever the idler beam from the first downconverter (DC1) passes through and is aligned with the second downconverter (DC2). Misaligning the idlers, or blocking the first idler, makes the interference disappear. More generally, the degree of coherence can be controlled by varying the amplitude of the idler from DC1 that reaches DC2. The interpretation of this nonclassical interference is discussed in terms of the interpretation of the wave function or state vector of the emitted photon.

Tunable quantum interference: How to make morning, noon, and afternoon states

Holger Friedrich Hofmann, Takafumi Ono

We show that the N-photon states produced by interference between laser light and downconverted light at the input of a two path interferometer can be characterized by a single tuning parameter that describes a transition from phase squeezing to nearly maximal path entanglement and back. The quantum states are visualized on a sphere using the analogy between N-photon interference and the spin-N/2 algebra.

Generation of amplitude squeezed states of light from phase squeezed coherent states

Kasivishvanathan Sundar

We propose a scheme to generate a displaced macroscopic superposition of phase squeezed coherent states by incorporating an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) and a nonlinear Kerr medium in a Mach-Zhender interferometer configuration. We show that the phase squeezed coherent state generated by the OPO evolves into a macroscopic superposition of phase squeezed coherent states on spending a specific amount of time inside a Kerr medium. The phase space displacement is achieved by the interference of the intense reference beam with the signal in the final beam splitter of the interferometer. The noise of the reference beam contaminating the signal is prevented by making this beam splitter highly reflective. We have calculated the photon number uncertainty of the outcoming beam and have shown that it is smaller than the usual amplitude squeezed coherent state's value.

Analysis of the time-energy entanglement of down-converted photon pairs by correlated single-photon interference

Changliang Ren, Holger Friedrich Hofmann

The time-energy entanglement of down-converted photon pairs is particularly difficult to characterize because direct measurements of photon arrival times are limited by the temporal resolution of photon detection. Here, we explore an alternative possibility of characterizing the temporal coherence of two-photon wave functions using single-photon interference with weak coherent light. Specifically, this method makes use of the fact that down conversion generates a coherent superposition of vacuum and two-photon states, so that the coincidence count rates for photon pairs after interference with weak coherent light are given by a superposition of the two-photon wave function from the down conversion with the product wave function defined by the weak coherent references. By observing the frequency-dependent interference pattern, it is possible to reconstruct the amplitudes and the phases of the two-photon wave function within the bandwidth of the reference pulses used in the single-photon interferences. The correlated single-photon interferences therefore provide a direct map of the entangled two-photon wave function generated in the down-conversion process.

Characterization of two-photon interference between a weak coherent state and a heralded single photon state

Aojie Xu, Lifeng Duan, Lirong Wang +1 more

We experimentally investigate two-photon interference between a weak coherent state and a heralded single-photon state, producing from a spontaneous parametric down conversion. Both the unequal spectrum linewidth and average photon number ratio in a given time interval are considered in our model. We obtained excellent agreement between our experimental data and prediction from our model. Furthermore, the range of observing high visibility two-photon interference is significantly extended by isolating coincidence events from two-photon contributions in the weak coherent state. These results may throw some new light on quantum information technology when the two-photon interference with independent sources is required.

Experimental observation of three-photon interference between a two-photon state and a weak coherent state on a beam splitter

Tingyu Li, Saburo Sakurai, Katsuyuki Kasai +3 more

We experimentally demonstrated a three-photon interference on a beam splitter between a weak coherent state and a two-photon state produced by a spontaneous parametric down conversion. It indicates that a combined three-photon probability amplitude, which is formed by the two-photon state and one-photon from the coherent state, can be used to interfere with another three-photon probability amplitude from the coherent state. The observed three-photon coincidence rate showed that the interference depended on not only the relative phase between the two interference field but also the amplitude of the weak coherent state. This may introduce another free parameter for preparing quantum state, such as high N00N state, with quantum interference.
