Bifurcation effects in coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract

Bifurcation behavior of effective Hamiltonians is investigated for coupled systems of Bose-Einstein condensates. Phase-space structure mapped on the Bloch sphere shows a variety of Josephson-related behavior, systematically classified in the bifurcation analysis, leading to a phase diagram with prediction of some physical effects.

Bifurcation Analysis of the Dynamics of Two Vortices in a Bose–Einstein Condensate. The Case of Intensities of Opposite Signs

S.V. Sokolov, Pavel Evgen'evich Ryabov

This paper is concerned with a system two point vortices in a Bose–Einstein condensate enclosed in a trap. The Hamiltonian form of equations of motion is presented and its Liouville integrability is shown. A bifurcation diagram is constructed, analysis of bifurcations of Liouville tori is carried out for the case of opposite-signed vortices, and the types of critical motions are identified.

Quantum dynamics of a model for two Josephson-coupled Bose–Einstein condensates

Arlei Prestes Tonel, Jon Links, Angela Foerster

In this work, we investigate the quantum dynamics of a model for two single-mode Bose–Einstein condensates which are coupled via Josephson tunnelling. Using direct numerical diagonalization of the Hamiltonian, we compute the time evolution of the expectation value for the relative particle number across a wide range of couplings. Our analysis shows that the system exhibits rich and complex behaviours varying between harmonic and non-harmonic oscillations, particularly around the threshold coupling between the delocalized and self-trapping phases. We show that these behaviours are dependent on both the initial state of the system and regime of the coupling. In addition, a study of the dynamics for the variance of the relative particle number expectation and the entanglement for different initial states is presented in detail.

Quantum dynamics of three coupled atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

Kae Nemoto, Catherine A. Holmes, Gerard J Milburn +1 more

The simplest model of three coupled Bose-Einstein condensates is investigated using a group theoretical method. The stationary solutions are determined using the SU(3) group under the mean-field approximation. This semiclassical analysis, using system symmetries, shows a transition in the dynamics of the system from self trapping to delocalization at a critical value for the coupling between the condensates. The global dynamics are investigated by examination of the stable points, and our analysis shows that the structure of the stable points depends on the ratio of the condensate coupling to the particle-particle interaction, and undergoes bifurcations as this ratio is varied. This semiclassical model is compared to a full quantum treatment, which also displays a dynamical transition. The quantum case has collapse and revival sequences superimposed on the semiclassical dynamics, reflecting the underlying discreteness of the spectrum. Nonzero circular current states are also demonstrated as one of the higher-dimensional effects displayed in this system.

Three coupled atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

Kae Nemoto, Gerard J Milburn, William J. Munro

Summary form only given. We present a quantum and semiclassical analysis of the dynamics of three coupled atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). The quantum description is most conveniently analyzed in terms of the operator algebra of SU(3). The space of pure states corresponds to a real manifold of five dimensions corresponding to the parameters of the coset SU(3)/U(2). This is the higher dimensional analogue of the Bloch sphere which has been used to describe the dynamics of two coupled BECs. The equations of motion in the Heisenberg picture can be mapped onto equations in this real manifold. The semiclassical description also involves five real parameters, and corresponds to the mean values of the Heisenberg equations with a factorisation assumption for higher order moments. The symmetries of the problem may be used to construct the ground states of the quantum system for both positive and negative scattering lengths. The structure of the ground states change as the elastic scattering strength changes with respect to the linear tunnelling coupling between the condensate components.

Phase separation and dynamics of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

R. Navarro, R. Carretero-González, P. G. Kevrekidis

We study the interactions between two atomic species in a binary Bose-Einstein condensate to revisit the conditions for miscibility, oscillatory dynamics between the species, steady-state solutions, and their stability. By employing a variational approach for a quasi-one-dimensional, two-atomic species condensate, we obtain equations of motion for the parameters of each species: amplitude, width, position, and phase. A further simplification leads to a reduction of the dynamics into a simple classical Newtonian system where components oscillate in an effective potential with a frequency that depends on the harmonic trap strength and the interspecies coupling parameter. We develop explicit conditions for miscibility that can be interpreted as a phase diagram that depends on the harmonic trap's strength and the interspecies coupling parameter. We numerically illustrate the bifurcation scenario whereby nontopological, phase-separated states of increasing complexity emerge out of a symmetric state as the interspecies coupling is increased. The symmetry-breaking dynamical evolution of some of these states is numerically monitored and the associated asymmetric states are also explored.

Classical and quantum dynamics of a model for atomic-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates

G. Santos, Arlei Prestes Tonel, Angela Foerster +1 more

We study a model for a two-mode atomic-molecular Bose-Einstein condensate. Starting with a classical analysis we determine the phase space fixed points of the system. It is found that bifurcations of the fixed points naturally separate the coupling parameter space into four regions. The different regions give rise to qualitatively different dynamics. We then show that this classification holds true for the quantum dynamics.
