Abstract

We experimentally observe that the width of beating signal between drive and broad-band probe fields becomes significantly narrower (more than 1000 times) than it has been before propagating throught the cell.

Spectral narrowing via quantum coherence

Eugeniy E. Mikhailov, Vladimir A. Sautenkov, Yuri V. Rostovtsev +4 more

We have studied the transmission through an optically thick $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ vapor that is illuminated by monochromatic and noise-broadened laser fields in $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ configuration. The spectral width of the beat signal between the two fields after transmission through the atomic medium is more than 1000 times narrower than the spectral width of this signal before the medium.

Coherent Resonances in a Dipole-Broadened Contour of Selective Reflection from the Transparent Insulator–Atomic Rubidium Vapor Interface

Vladimir A. Sautenkov, Sergey A. Saakyan, Andrey A. Bobrov +2 more

Abstract Coherent narrow resonances in a homogeneously broadened contour of selective reflection from the interface between a cell window and high-density atomic rubidium vapor, where the dipole broadening greatly exceeds the Doppler width of the unresolved components of rubidium D2 line, are discussed. The formation of coherent resonances is caused by the coherent scattering of probe and pump optical fields from the oscillations of populations of the ground and excited states of atoms at the beat frequency. The width of each resonance depends on the population difference decay rate. Within a simple model conditions are found for observing resonances with a Lorentzian spectral profile. The experimentally recorded coherent resonances are described by a Lorentz function with fitting parameters in the form of amplitude, width, and spectral baseline. In the limit of zero optical saturation the measured half-width of a coherent resonance (HWHM) γres/2π is about 52 MHz, which greatly exceeds the radiative decay rate of the rubidium excited state 5P3/2.

Radiation-matter oscillations and spectral line narrowing in field-correlated four-wave mixing. II. Experiment

Mark A. Dugan, A. C. Albrecht

New radiation-matter phenomena in four-wave mixing spectroscopies, given a theoretical basis in the preceding paper [Dugan and Albrecht, Phys. Rev. A 43, 3877 (1991)], are examined experimentally here. A new class of Rabi detuning oscillations is recorded in interferometric coherent Stokes Raman scattering (CSRS). Two identical nanosecond incoherent light fields are mutually delayed, while simultaneously mixing in a nonlinear medium with a narrow-band field of a different color. Spectral filtering of the CSRS signal is essential. From such signals the frequencies and the dephasing rate constants can be a measure of the Raman-active vibrations in both the electronic ground state and the electronic excited state of the scattering chromophore. In principle, analogous probing of vibronic transitions is possible. Detuning oscillations for multimode systems are presented. It is shown how they are transformed into quantum beats, exactly those seen with femtosecond CSRS, when the narrow-band field is made broad and/or the detection is ``white.'' Finally, an example of the sub-Raman linewidth spectral feature, predicted in the preceding paper, is presented. It determines a Raman frequency, but does not carry its linewidth.
