Bose-Einstein condensation of spin-1/2 atoms with conserved total spin

Abstract

Recently it has been predicted that if a gas of spin-1/2 bosonic atoms is cooled down while conserving its total spin, it can form a Bose-Einstein condensate in a new type of fragmented state. In that fragmented state two orbital wave functions are macroscopically occupied. We derive a set of Gross-Pitaevskii equations that describe the two occupied wave functions, taking into account the effects of interatomic interactions. We then analyze the solutions of those equations in some special cases. In particular, we find that if the fragmented state is realized in a toroidal trap, under certain conditions the system will spontaneously acquire macroscopic orbital angular momentum. Finally, we discuss the nature of the phase transition from an uncondensed gas to a fragmented-state condensate.

Fragmentation of spin-orbit-coupled spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Shu-Wei Song, Yi‐Cai Zhang, Hong Jin Zhao +2 more

The fragmentation of spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose gas with a weak interaction in external harmonic trap is explored by both exact diagonalization and mean-field theory. This fragmentation tendency, which originates from the total angular momentum conservation, is affected obviously by the spin-orbit-coupling strength and the spin-dependent interaction. Strong spin-orbit interaction raises the inverse participation ratio, which describes the number of significantly occupied single-particle states. As the spin-dependent interaction changes from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic, the peak values in the inverse participation ratio become lower. Without the confinement of the appointed total angular momentum, the condensate chooses a zero or finite total angular momentum ground state, which is determined by both the interaction and the spin-orbit-coupling strength.

Topics in the Theory of Bose -Einstein Condensates With a Spin Degree of Freedom

Sahel Ashhab

We study several problems in Bose-Einstein condensates with internal degrees of freedom, and we find that this kind of condensates, which are usually referred to as spinor condensates, exhibit several phenomena that are qualitatively different from scalar (i.e. spinless) condensates. We analyze the ground state of a condensate with the constraint of maintaining a constant value of the total spin, and we find a number of different structures depending on the value of the total spin and the applied external magnetic field. We also study a certain type of measurement on spinor condensates in an attempt to distinguish between the so-called coherent and singlet states. We find that this kind of measurement cannot distinguish between the two states in question. We then consider a different experiment based on the interference between spinor condensate. It turns out that interference experiments cannot be used to distinguish between coherent and singlet states either. One of the interesting results regarding interference between two spinor condensates is that both the offset and visibility of the interference fringes vary from shot to shot, even if the initial conditions are identical in all the runs of the experiment. We then turn to the problem of condensing a gas of effectively spin 1/2 atoms. We argue that if spin relaxation mechanisms are slow enough, the condensate displays the phenomenon of fragmentation. The main difference of the fragmented state that we study and other fragmented states discussed in the literature is that this one is not caused by interatomic interactions, but rather by the constraint on the total spin of the system. We investigate the consequences of performing the experiment in a toroidal trap, and we find that, under certain conditions, the system spontaneously builds up a macroscopic value of orbital angular momentum. We finally discuss several problems related to the external Josephson effect. We derive simple equations of motion for the case of a two-component condensate that are identical to the extensively analyzed Bloch equations. We also find equilibrium points of the motion that are unstable in the spinless case.

Fragmented Condensate in a Two-Component Bose Gas with $p$-wave Interactions

Mingyang Liu, Shizhong Zhang

In this Letter, we discuss the effects of $p$-wave attractive interaction in a spin-$1/2$ Bose gas. With a repulsive $s$-wave background interaction, we show that for weak $p$-wave attraction, one obtains a standard Bose-Einstein condensate at zero momentum with spins fully polarized. Upon increasing the $p$-wave attraction, a fragmented condensate state with singlet pair formation and $p$-wave correlation emerges. We determine the transition point and investigate the properties of the fragmented condensate using an ansatz wave function. We construct the relevant Gross-Pitaevskii equations for the fragmented condensate and show that the sound velocities are anisotropic and may vanish in specific directions. Based on the many-body wave function, we also discuss the low-energy spin excitations of the system.

Bose-Einstein condensate of a mixture of two species of spin-1 atoms

Ma Luo, Zhibing Li, Bao Cheng-guang

The interaction between two species of atoms in the condensate has been deduced and the trial wave functions that conserve the total spin have been constructed for the states of the ground band. A couple of generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equations have been derived for the spatial wave functions and the energies. The mixture of $^{23}\mathrm{Na}$ and $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ has been calculated as an example. The density of states is found to exhibit a ladder shape.

Attractive Bose gas in two dimensions: An analytical study of its fragmentation and collapse

Marios C. Tsatsos

An attractive Bose-Einstein condensate in two spatial dimensions is expected to collapse for supercritical values of the interaction strength. Moreover, it is known that for nonzero quanta of angular momentum and infinitesimal attraction the gas prefers to fragment and distribute its angular momentum over different orbitals. In this work we examine the two-dimensional trapped Bose gas for finite values of attraction and describe the ground state in connection to its angular momentum by theoretical methods that go beyond the standard Gross-Pitaevskii theory. By applying the best-mean-field approach over a variational ansatz whose accuracy has been checked numerically, we derive analytical relations for the energy, the fragmentation of the ground states, and the critical (for collapse) value of the attraction strength as a function of the total angular momentum $L$.

Ground band and a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation for spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Bao Cheng-guang, Zhibing Li

For spinor Bose-Einstein condensates both the total spin $S$ and its $Z$ component ${S}_{Z}$ should be conserved. However, in existing theories, only the conservation of ${S}_{Z}$ has been taken into account. To remedy this, here we attempt to take the conservation of both $S$ and ${S}_{Z}$ into account. For this purpose, a total spin state with the good quantum numbers $S$ and ${S}_{Z}$ is introduced in the trial wave function; thereby a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation has been derived. With this equation, the ground bands of the $^{23}\mathrm{Na}$ and $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ condensates have been studied, where the levels that are distinct in $S$ split. It was found that the level density is extremely dense in the bottom of the ground band of $^{23}\mathrm{Na}$, i.e., in the vicinity of the ground state. On the contrary, for $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$, the levels are extremely dense in the top of the ground band.
