A Class of Quasi-exact Solutions of Rabi Hamiltonian

Abstract

A class of quasi-exact solutions of the Rabi Hamiltonian, which describes a two-level atom interacting with a single-mode radiation field via a dipole interaction without the rotating-wave approximation, are obtained by using a wavefunction ansatz. Exact solutions for part of the spectrum are obtained when the atom-field coupling strength and the field frequency satisfy certain relations. As an example, the lowest exact energy level and the corresponding atom-field entanglement at the quasi-exactly solvable point are calculated and compared to results from the Jaynes–Cummings and counter-rotating cases of the Rabi Hamiltonian.

Exactly solvable approximating models for Rabi Hamiltonian dynamics

Andrey Pereverzev, Eric R. Bittner

The interaction between an atom and a one mode external driving field is an ubiquitous problem in many branches of physics and is often modeled using the Rabi Hamiltonian. In this paper we present a series of analytically solvable Hamiltonians that approximate the Rabi Hamiltonian and compare our results to the Jaynes-Cummings model which neglects the so-called counter-rotating term in the Rabi Hamiltonian. Through a unitary transformation that diagonalizes the Jaynes-Cummings model, we transform the counter-rotating term into separate terms representing several different physical processes. By keeping only certain terms, we can achieve an excellent approximation to the exact dynamics within specified parameter ranges.

A progressive diagonalization scheme for the Rabi Hamiltonian

Feng Pan, Xin Guan, Yin Wang +1 more

A diagonalization scheme for the Rabi Hamiltonian, which describes a qubit interacting with a single-mode radiation field via a dipole interaction, is proposed. It is shown that the Rabi Hamiltonian can be solved almost exactly using a progressive scheme that involves a finite set of one variable polynomial equations. The scheme is especially efficient for the lower part of the spectrum. Some low-lying energy levels of the model with several sets of parameters are calculated and compared to those provided by the recently proposed generalized rotating-wave approximation and a full matrix diagonalization.

Beyond the Rabi model: Light interactions with polar atomic systems in a cavity

Giovanni Scala, Karolina Słowik, Paolo Facchi A +2 more

The Rabi Hamiltonian, describing the interaction between a two-level atomic system and a single-cavity mode of the electromagnetic field, is one of the fundamental models in quantum optics. The model becomes exactly solvable by considering an atom without permanent dipole moments, whose excitation energy is quasiresonant with the cavity photon energy, and by neglecting the nonresonant (counter-rotating) terms. In this case, after including the decay of either the atom or the cavity mode to a continuum, one can derive the well-known phenomenology of quasiresonant transitions, including the fluorescence triplets. In this work we consider the most general Rabi model, incorporating the effects of permanent atomic electric dipole moments. Based on a perturbative analysis, we compare the intensities of emission lines induced by rotating terms, counter-rotating terms, and parity-symmetry-breaking terms in order to identify the parameter regimes in which these different contributions play a significant role. The analysis reveals that the emission strength related to the existence of permanent dipoles may surpass the one due to the counter-rotating interaction terms but is usually much weaker than the emission due to the main, resonant coupling. This ratio can be modified in systems with a reduced dimensionality or by engineering the energy spectral density of the continuum.

Interaction of a two-level atom with single-mode optical field beyond the rotating wave approximation

Ju Liu, Zhiyuan Li

One of the simplest models involving the atom-field interaction is the coupling of a single two-level atom with single-mode optical field. Under the rotating wave approximation, this problem is reduced to a form that can be solved exactly. But the approximation is only valid when the two levels are resonant or nearly resonant with the applied electromagnetic radiation. Here we present an analytical solution without the rotating wave approximation and applicable to general atom-field interaction far away from the resonance. We find that there exists remarkable influence of the initial phase of optical field on the Rabi oscillations and Rabi splitting, and this issue cannot be explored in the context of the rotating wave approximation. Due to the retention of the counter-rotating terms, higher-order harmonic appears during the Rabi splitting. The analytical solution suggests a way to regulate and control the quantum dynamics of a two-level atom and allows for exploring more essential features of the atom-field interaction.

Higher-order correction for rotating wave approximation, Rabi transformation, and its applications in the Jaynes-Cummings model

Wang XiaoGuang, Sun Changpu

Taking into account the consistence of the quantum adiabatic approximation and the rotating wave approximation in essence, we propose a method to study the interaction between atom and radiation field in a quantized cavity systematically. By using the exact solution of Jaynes-Cummings model as the lowest-order approximation, the effect of high frequency terms on the dynamics of atom-cavity field system is studied analytically.

Eigenvalues and Eigenstates of Quantum Rabi Model

Andrei V. Ivanov

The scientific interest in the analytical solution of the quantum Rabi model is due to the widespread use of this simple model in quantum optics, quantum computing, cavity QED, and nanoelectromechanical systems. This interest is related to the need for the theoretical description of the interaction of a two-level system with a quantum oscillator in the case when the rotating wave approximation fails. In this Letter, we present an approach to the exact diagonalization of the quantum Rabi Hamiltonian. This approach is based on the properties of the Pauli operators and allows us to readily solve the stationary Schrodinger equation for a two-level system. First, we demonstrate the applicability of the approach to the Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian to get the well-known solution. Then, we obtain the eigenvalues and eigenstates for the quantum Rabi Hamiltonian using the proposed approach. It is shown that the obtained eigenstates can be represented in the basis of the eigenstates of the Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian.
