Nonlinear optics via double dark resonances

Susanne F. Yelin, Vladimir A. Sautenkov, Michael M. Kash +2 more

Double dark resonances originate from a coherent perturbation of a system displaying electromagnetically induced transparency. We experimentally show and theoretically confirm that this leads to the possibility of extremely sharp resonances prevailing even in the presence of considerable Doppler broadening. A gas of ${}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms is subjected to a strong drive laser and a weak probe laser and a radio frequency field, where the magnetic coupling between the Zeeman levels leads to nonlinear generation of a comb of sidebands.

Observation of narrow Autler-Townes components in the resonant response of a dense atomic gas

Vladimir A. Sautenkov, Yuri V. Rostovtsev, E. R. Eliel

We have experimentally studied the reflection of a weak probe beam from a dense atomic potassium vapor in the presence of a strong laser field tuned to the atomic resonance transition. We have observed an Autler-Townes doublet under hitherto unexplored conditions, namely, that the Rabi frequency induced by the strong laser field is much smaller than the self-broadened width of the resonance transition of the unexcited vapor. We attribute our observation to a reduction of the atomic decoherence by the strong drive field. We present a theoretical model of nonlinear processes in a dense atomic gas to explain the observed results.

Two-color optical nonlinearity in an ultracold Rydberg atom gas mixture

Cheng Chen, Fan Yang, Xiaoling Wu +3 more

We report the experimental observation of strong two-color optical nonlinearity in an ultracold gas of $^{85}\mathrm{Rb}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atom mixture. By simultaneously coupling two probe transitions of $^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ and $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms to Rydberg states in electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) configurations, we observe significant suppression of the transparency resonance for one probe field when the second probe field is detuned at $\ensuremath{\sim}1\phantom{\rule{3.33333pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{GHz}$ and hitting the EIT resonance of the other isotope. Such a cross-absorption modulation to the beam propagation dynamics can be described by two coupled nonlinear wave equations we develop. We further demonstrate that the two-color optical nonlinearity can be tuned by varying the density ratio of different atomic isotopes, which highlights its potential for exploring strongly interacting multicomponent fluids of light.
