Quantum dynamical semigroups, group representations and convolution semigroups

Paolo Aniello

Semigroups of operators are known to play an important role in theoretical physics. In particular, quantum dynamical semigroups are fundamental in the theory of open quantum systems. We will describe a class of semigroups of operators which has interesting applications, for instance, in quantum information science. Each of these semigroups of operators is generated, in a suitable way, by a representation (or an antirepresentation) of a group in a Banach space and by a convolution semigroup of probability measures on that group. Some significant examples—including a remarkable type of quantum dynamical semigroups introduced by Kossakowski in the pioneering times of the theory of open quantum systems—and their mutual relations will be discussed.

Quantum-Dynamical Semigroups and the Church of the Larger Hilbert Space

Frederik vom Ende

In this work we investigate Stinespring dilations of quantum-dynamical semigroups, which are known to exist by means of a constructive proof given by Davies in the early 70s. We show that if the semigroup describes an open system, that is, if it does not consist of only unitary channels, then the evolution of the dilated closed system has to be generated by an unbounded Hamiltonian; subsequently the environment has to correspond to an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, regardless of the original system. Moreover, we prove that the second derivative of Stinespring dilations with a bounded total Hamiltonian yields the dissipative part of some quantum-dynamical semigroup — and vice versa. In particular this characterizes the generators of quantum-dynamical semigroups via Stinespring dilations.

Quantum Markov Semigroups and their Stationary States

Franco Fagnola, Rolando Rebolledo

The notion of a Quantum Markov Semigroup (QMS) is an extension of classical Markov semigroups motivated by the study of open quantum systems. Indeed, a number of physicists interested in open quantum systems introduced the notion of Quantum Dynamical Semigroups in the Seventies. Since then the subject has been extensively discussed and improved by both physicists and mathematicians, especially by the founders of Quantum Stochastic Analysis. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
