In this work we investigate Stinespring dilations of quantum-dynamical semigroups, which are known to exist by means of a constructive proof given by Davies in the early 70s. We show that if the semigroup describes an open system, that is, if it does not consist of only unitary channels, then the evolution of the dilated closed system has to be generated by an unbounded Hamiltonian; subsequently the environment has to correspond to an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, regardless of the original system. Moreover, we prove that the second derivative of Stinespring dilations with a bounded total Hamiltonian yields the dissipative part of some quantum-dynamical semigroup — and vice versa. In particular this characterizes the generators of quantum-dynamical semigroups via Stinespring dilations.

We explore the symmetry properties of Stinespring dilations of single-qubit Pauli channels, addressing both the generic case and the specific examples of phase damping and depolarizing channels. For each scenario, we derive the representation of the Pauli group acting on the Hilbert space of the environment. We then focus on dilations that are continuous in time and driven by a time-independent Hamiltonian, and on collision models that generate a Pauli dynamical semigroup in the limit of fast collisions. First, we complement some recent general results on these types of dilations (M. Cattaneo, Phys. Rev. A 111, 022209 (2025)) with some additions and clarifications, including the case of covariant channels with strongly conserved quantities. Next, we show that the covariance property of Pauli channels impose strong constraints on both the dilation Hamiltonian and the initial state of the environment, and demonstrate how these constraints can be exploited to explicitly construct the time-dependent dilations in all considered cases. Our results are relevant for the quantum simulation of Pauli channels via unitary dilations and of Pauli semigroups via collision models, both in the laboratory and on quantum computers.
In the study of open quantum systems, one commonly describes the evolution of a system of interest through reduced dynamics, obtained by treating the environment indirectly rather than as a part of the full model. This thesis presents an expository account of an alternative, dilation-based viewpoint in the finite-dimensional setting, where a family of reduced dynamics is represented through unitary evolution on a larger system consisting of the original system together with an ancillary environment. After reviewing the reduced-dynamics perspective and the language of quantum channels, we formulate finite-dimensional quantum dynamics as channel-valued dynamical curves and use this framework to discuss Stinespring dilations of such curves. We then present exact dilation results for analytic dynamical curves, explain the singular behavior that can arise at t=0, and describe approximation results showing that Lipschitz-continuous dynamical curves admit approximate finite-dimensional Stinespring dilations. The thesis therefore provides a mathematically focused introduction to dilation-based modeling of quantum dynamics and argues that a change of perspective can lead to new ways of formulating problems in the theory of open quantum systems.
We show that the discrete-time evolution of an open quantum system generated by a single quantum channel T can be embedded in the discrete-time evolution of an enlarged closed quantum system, i.e., we construct a unitary dilation of the discrete-time quantum-dynamical semigroup (Tn)n∈N0. In the case of a cyclic channel T, the auxiliary space may be chosen (partially) finite-dimensional. We further investigate discrete-time quantum control systems generated by finitely many commuting quantum channels and prove a similar unitary dilation result as in the case of a single channel.
In this thesis we study the problem of continuous measurement on an open quantum system. The starting point of our analysis is the time-evolution of an open quantum system where the evolution of the environment is not explicitly described, i.e. traced out.More explicitly we restrict to time-evolutions having the structure of a semigroup or evolution system. That is, for time-points 0 ≤ r ≤ s ≤ t there exists a two-parameter family of completely-positive maps E * (t, s), such that E * (t, s)E * (s, r) = E * (t, r) and the systems state evolved according to ρ(tPhysically this means that in our Ansatz the interaction between system and environment is already fixed and can only be weak. The main goal of this thesis is now to describe, mathematically rigorous, all continuous measurements compatible with the given evolution.A measurement is compatible with the given time-evolution, if the evolution does not change when measurement results are ignored. In other words the measurement is indirect and does not further disturb the systems evolution. Our results can be interpreted as a rigorous construction of continuous matrix product states, and are related to the Hudson-Parthasarathy quantum stochastic calculus. The analysis in this thesis separates into two parts. In the first we study the class of quantum systems having an evolution system structure as described above.Precisely we study the theory of minimal solutions to a Cauchy equation with a generator of Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad type.We do this for the case of time-dependent and unbounded generators. This analysis culminates in the description of a counterexample due to Holevo of a semigroup which is not the minimal solution to such a standard Lindblad equation. In the second part we construct a description of all measurements compatible with a given evolution and thus achieve our main goal. The analysis starts with the discrete-time version of the problem, i.e.where the time-points r, s, t in the above description of the evolution are chosen from a finite set. This discrete-time problem is completely solved by Stinespring dilation theory. We then construct our solution of the continuous-time case as a refinement limit over arbitrary discretizations of the evolution.Hence, our construction gives a continuous-time analogue of the Stinespring dilation for semigroups and evolution systems. It can be interpreted as a complete quantum description of the information the system radiates into the environment, i.e. it yields a quantum state of the environment. We complement the description of the state with a description of the observables for continuous measurements and the calculation expectation values.
Background: Operator algebras and quantum dynamical semigroups are the mathematical tools of choice for understanding open quantum systems, especially in infinite-dimensional spaces. Such tools are extremely important for the time development of quantum systems out of equilibium under the influence of environment, where conventional finite dimensional methods do not include all possibilities for interaction. Objective: The objects of the present research are the r-properties and the decompositions of generators of quantum dynamical semigroups on infinite-dimensional spaces including their Hamiltonian and dissipative part, semigroup continuity, stationary states, and positivity improvement. The aim is to set a fundament in order to think about long-time dynamics in open quantum systems. Methods: The theorem Hille–Yosida is used to get conditions for the semigroup strongly continuous generated by unbounded operators. The time-evolution operator of the system is approximated with both Gaussian quadrature and Monte Carlo integration during infinitesimal time slices, by using Inf-LCHS in conjunction. Generators were studied under decomposition of their Hamiltonian and dissipative parts, while commutant algebras were investigated for irreducibility and positivity enhancement. Results: Most systems studied for these properties presented a singular decomposition, strong and weak semigroup continuity, existence of stationary states and positivity improvement. The counterexamples were the systems with in a lack of verification for dissipative parts, and they lost smoothing property, uniqueness of decomposition, partial semigroup continuity or large errors in approximation when we perform numerically. Conclusions: The combination of the methods of operator algebra with state-of-the-art simulation techniques yields a powerful approach to study infinite-dimensional quantum dynamics. Although dissipative components are not yet completely characterized, the results improve our understanding of generator structures and long-term system behavior which will help future work in quantum statistical mechanics and quantum information theory.
In recent years, digraph induced generators of quantum dynamical semigroups have been introduced and studied, particularly in the context of unique relaxation and invariance. We define the class of pair block diagonal generators, which allows for additional interaction coefficients but preserves the main structural properties. Namely, when the basis of the underlying Hilbert space is given by the eigenbasis of the Hamiltonian (for example the generic semigroups), then the action of the semigroup leaves invariant the diagonal and off-diagonal matrix spaces. In this case, we explicitly compute all invariant states of the semigroup. In order to define this class we provide a characterization of when the Gorini- Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad (GKSL) equation defines a proper generator when arbitrary Lindblad operators are allowed (in particular, they do not need to be trace- less as demanded by the GKSL Theorem). Moreover, we consider the converse con- struction to show that every generator naturally gives rise to a digraph, and that under certain assumptions the properties of this digraph can be exploited to gain knowledge of both the number and the structure of the invariant states of the corre- sponding semigroup. We also consider more general constructions on the von Neumann algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space, perhaps infinite dimensional. In partic- ular, we prove that for every semigroup of Schwarz maps on such an algebra which has a subinvariant faithful normal state there exists an associated semigroup of con- tractions on the space of Hilbert-Schmidt operators of the Hilbert space. Moreover, we show that if the original semigroup is weak∗ continuous then the associated semigroup is strongly continuous. We introduce the notion of the extended generator of a semigroup on the bounded operators of a Hilbert space with respect to an or- thonormal basis of the Hilbert space. We describe this form of the generator of a quantum Markov semigroup on the von Neumann algebra of all bounded linear op- erators on a Hilbert space which has an invariant faithful normal state under the assumption that the generator of the associated semigroup has compact resolvent, or under the assumption that the minimal unitary dilation of the associated semigroup of contractions is compact.
