Spectral manifestation of an effective refraction index in a chiral optical medium inside a Fabry-Perot resonator with anisotropic mirrors

Abstract

New boundary conditions for the decoupling of elliptically polarized eigenmodes in an anisotropic optical cavity are proposed. It is shown that twisting the optical axis changes the phase shift of the waves. The difference between the effective refraction indices is greater than the one between ordinary and extraordinary refraction indices.

Frequency splitting of polarization eigenmodes in microscopic Fabry–Perot cavities

Manuel Uphoff, Manuel Brekenfeld, Gerhard Rempe +1 more

We study the frequency splitting of the polarization eigenmodes of the fundamental transverse mode in CO 2 laser-machined, high-finesse optical Fabry–Perot cavities and investigate the influence of the geometry of the cavity mirrors. Their highly reflective surfaces are typically not rotationally symmetric but have slightly different radii of curvature along two principal axes. We observe that the eccentricity of such elliptical mirrors lifts the degeneracy of the polarization eigenmodes. The impact of the eccentricity increases for smaller radii of curvature. A model derived from corrections to the paraxial resonator theory is in excellent agreement with the measurements, showing that geometric effects are the main source of the frequency splitting of polarization modes for the type of microscopic cavity studied here. By rotating one of the mirrors around the cavity axis, the splitting can be tuned. In the case of an identical differential phase shift per mirror, it can even be eliminated, despite a nonvanishing eccentricity of each mirror. We expect our results to have important implications for many experiments in cavity quantum electrodynamics, where Fabry–Perot cavities with small mode volumes are required.

Optical properties of dual-state Fabry–Perot étalons

Pochi Yeh, D. Botez, Claire Gu

We consider the optical properties of dual-state Fabry-Perot étalons where both the cavity and the external media can support two eigenmodes with different refractive indices. A matrix formulation is developed to analyze resonant transmission of such étalons. The results are presented and discussed. In particular, the results can be employed to explain the resonances of phase-locked arrays of antiguides.

Dynamical aspects of polarization induced switching phenomena in diffusively nonlinear Fabry-Perot resonators

Jan Danckaert, Hugo Thienpont A, Irina P. Veretennicoff

The combination of polarization optics and nonlinear optics gives rise to interesting new physical phenomena1. In the work presented here we will focus on planar resonators with a nonlinearity of diffusive nature, such as the nonlinear Fabry-Perot resonator (NLFP). There are two ways to display the role of polarization in the bistable response of such a device. First, in a configuration where the light wave is obliquely incident on the resonator, as the interface's reflectances depend on the polarization state of the incident light. Second, in a configuration where the beam impinges normally on a resonator now filled with an anisotropic material, as a phase shift is induced between the linear Airy resonances of the two polarization eigenmodes. In this paper, two dynamic theories for planar resonators are presented for both configurations mentioned above, for an arbitrary polarization of the incident plane wave.

Electromagnetically induced narrow linewidths of optical resonators

Matthias A. Müller, G. Muller, Andreas Wicht +2 more

Summary form only given. We present our work on the modified properties of an optical resonator that contains an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium. Transparency and steep index of refraction are utilized to reduce the linewidth of the cavity. The influence of the relative intensities of the laser fields is studied, and the results are in good agreement with computer simulations. The linewidth of an optical cavity depends on the phase shift accumulated by the light wave during one round trip. A transparent medium with very strong dispersion causes a very rapidly varying phase shift and would have a remarkable effect on the linewidth of the cavity.

Optical Bistability in a Two-State Dissipative Medium Inside a Fabry-Perot Cavity

In this work a theoretical model treating the optical bistability in a two state dissipative atomic medium inside a Fabry-Perot cavity is presented. The model is based on a semiclassical point of view to explain the field-matter interaction. The atoms of the medium are described by the "quantum polarization equation of motion" while the field is described by the "classical Maxwell's field equations".Applying the boundary conditions to the fields inside the Fabry-Perot cavity, the occurrence of optical bistability is deduced between the incident field intensity and both the intracavity and transmitted field intensities. Also the effect of building standing and nonstanding waves inside the cavity on bistability is discussed.

Fabry–Perot resonator with volume-distributed phase inhomogeneities

А. В. Белинский, Anatolii S Chirkin

The Born approximation is used to solve the problem of the influence of inhomogeneities of the refractive index of a medium filling a resonator on the resonator parameters. The attention is concentrated on finding the effective optical path (phase fluctuations) allowing for diffraction, which should give the expression for the Q factor of a resonator with an inhomogeneous medium. It is shown that diffraction has a positive influence reducing the role of distributed homogeneities and thus increasing the Q factor.
