Abstract

In this invited tutorial review paper, I discuss the various options available to match the state of polarization of the signal and local oscillator waves in a coherent fiber optical communication system. The various advantages and disadvantages of each technique are discussed and directions for further work are identified.

Quantum communications: An engineering approach

Armando N. Pinto, Nuno A. Silva, Nelson Jesus Muga +2 more

In this paper, we review our recent advances in the implementation of quantum communication systems. We start by discussing two types of optical quantum sources. A source based on a fainted semiconductor laser and another based on the four-wave mixing process. Afterwards, we discuss information encoding techniques in quantum states suitable to be used in fibre-optic quantum communication systems. Next, we present a non-intrusive technique to control random polarization rotations in polarization-encoded quantum communication systems. Finally, we discuss a quantum oblivious transfer protocol implementation based on the noisy storage model and on the use of hash functions.

In current optical coherent communication systems, balanced photo-detectors are typically employed, which preserve the product of the received optical signals and the local oscillators (LO) for detection but cancel out the power of both. Since only the product of the received optical signals and the

Stable quantum key distribution with active polarization control based on time-division multiplexing

Jiankang Chen, Guang Wu, Lu Xu +3 more

Polarization-encoding provides a promising approach for the practical quantum key distribution (QKD) system due to the simple encoding and decoding method. Here we present a long-term stable polarization-encoding QKD with a real-time polarization control. The polarization of the signal photons in the optical fiber was maintained stable by using time-division-multiplexed reference pulses for feedback control. We implemented this technique in the QKD experiment in 50 km fiber to show that it could facilitate polarization-encoded quantum communication. The system operated stably for ∼460 min, and the quantum bit error rate was ∼5.27%. The raw key generating rate in this system was kept stable at ∼500 bits s -1 . The advantages and disadvantages of the previous polarization-control schemes were also rigorously analyzed.
