Abstract

A new direct-coupled Josephson exclusively OR gate, based on a noninterferometer, is proposed. A high gain and a wide operation margin with fan-out 2 feature are produced by successive switchings of junctions. The threshold characteristics and functional operation have been investigated theoretically and experimentally.

An interferometer direct‐coupled Josephson logic gate

K. Hohkawa, Akira Ishida

Abstract New interferometer direct‐coupled Josephson logic gates are proposed which have good input‐output signal separation and stable, high‐gain, wide‐margin operation. Formulas for evaluating the threshold characteristics and conditions for high gain and high sensitivity are derived. Dynamic properties such as switching times and waveforms are obtained by computer simulation. These gates were tested‐fabricated with a lead alloy whose properties agreed with the results of computer simulation: sensitivity was 2.5 over a bias range of more than 50%. Thus, they can be used as basic logic elements in buffers and OR gates.

A novel current injection Josephson logic gate with high gain

K. Hohkawa, Masaru Okada, Akira Ishida

A novel Josephson logic gate achieving high gain, employing current injection, and having a noninterferometer configuration has been proposed and studied. The gate includes three small junctions for input sensing, output driving, and I-O isolation. The junctions are appropriately biased by source resistors to obtain high current gain. Computer simulation and preliminary experiment have demonstrated that a current gain higher than 2 can easily be obtained through the proposed configuration.

Direct-coupled Josephson full adder

J. H. Magerlein, L. N. Dunkleberger

We describe a one-bit full adder circuit constructed from direct-coupled Josephson logic elements. The basic gate, which can perform various logic functions, consists of two Josephson junctions and two resistors connected in a loop. Switching the junctions into the finite-voltage state diverts the bias current into a parallel output line, which is directly coupled through the junctions of successive logic elements. The adder is constructed with a 100 μm basic linewidth and 25 μm square tin tunnel junctions. It operates under all input data conditions with an add time of about 1 nS and a power dissipation of 1 μW per gate.

A simple high-performance current-switched Josephson gate

T. A. Fulton, S. S. Pei, L. N. Dunkleberger

A versatile current-switched gate is described which consists of two Josephson tunnel junctions and a small resistor in a loop. The directly combined bias and control currents flow through one junction in the zero-voltage state, causing the switching. The second junction and the resistor provide isolation between input and output after switching. The switching speed of a few tens of picoseconds and the microwatt power dissipation are comparable to those of other present designs. The design is particularly simple, compact, and easy to fabricate.

Josephson dual rail two-bit adder circuit utilizing magnetically coupled OR-AND gates

Hirotaka Yamada, Yoshichika Ichimiya, Akira Ishida

A novel Josephson logic gate called the asymmetrical interferometer device (AID) is presented. It is composed of a pair of asymmetrical interferometers whose outputs are injected into a single junction. The interferometers are individually operated as two input OR and the single junction is worked as AND.(A + B) (C + D)operation is accomplished by only one AID gate. They have a serial fan-in capability due to their magnetic coupling scheme. The gate size is reduced by half, compared with the previous current injection logic (CIL) gate. With these AID gates, a high-speed two-bit dual rail adder circuit is configured, which provides the logic circuits performing with both true and complement inputs and without any timing circuits. The AID gate fabricated by standard 5-µm Pb-alloy technology showed a wide margin over ±20 percent that was in good agreement with statically designed characteristics. Experimental adder operation was also successfully performed.
