Influence of optical Stark effect on the amplification of intense light pulses in resonance media

Abstract

The amplification of intense light pulses in resonance active media with an optical Stark effect and coherence effects is examined theoretically. In the course of the amplification, the pulse may go through a stage of an incoherent Stark quasisoliton. The envelope of this quasisoliton has an approximately constant, highly asymmetric shape. The energy of the quasisoliton is approximately constant. Upon further amplification, the Stark quasisoliton "breaks up" into a train of shorter pulses. Over a sufficiently long amplification distance, a true soliton may form in the active medium. In general, this true soliton is not the same as a standard π pulse in a medium without a Stark effect.

Formation of steady-state high-power shock radiation pulses in resonantly amplifying media

Vladimir D Taranukhin

A theory is developed for the amplification of high-power radiation pulses in resonant media allowing for the optical Stark effect and induced line broadening. It is predicted that steady-state radiation pulses having a steep leading edge will be formed in long amplifiers and that these pulses will be stable with respect to large-scale and small-scale transverse perturbations.

Characteristics of coherent amplification of short optical pulses in media with a nonresonant polarizability

V. A. Yurevich

A calculation is reported of the parameters of amplification of light pulses in crystalline laser media with a nonresonant nonlinear polarizability when the duration of the pulses being amplified is less than the phase relaxation time of the medium. A reduction in the contrast and an increase in the frequency of the nutation substructure of the radiation intensity, and also a shift and asymmetry of the Stark doublet structure in the spectrum of the pulses are predicted.

Optical Stark effect in an active medium

R F Mardanov, Yu. E. Pol’skii

The semiclassical approximation is used in an analysis of the nonlinear shift of the frequency of an electric dipole transition in a high-power radiation field. It is shown that the shift can only increase the frequency. The magnitude of the shift is proportional to the field intensity but independent of its frequency. Secondapproximation relationships are derived for the calculation of the parameters of the interaction of the field with an active medium. Numerical estimates of the Stark effect are obtained for some gaseous active media.

On the problem of ideal amplification of optical solitons

Gaston Melo Melchor, Máximo Augusto Agüero Granados, G H Corro

The new possibilities of almost ideal amplification of optical solitons during the incoherent interaction of light pulses with a resonantly amplifying medium are considered. The mechanism of two-photon amplification of optical solitons with an optimal frequency-modulation law is proposed. It is shown that the entirely ideal amplification of solitons cannot be achieved because the law of phase modulation of radiation differs from a parabolic law. The possibility of using the phase cross modulation to produce the required initial phase of amplified solitons is studied.

Self-induced-transparency soliton propagation under the influence of a far-from-resonance transition line

Victor V. Kozlov, Evald E. Fradkin

The results of theoretical research of the propagation effect of an ultrashort optical pulse under the conditions of coherent interaction with two resonant transitions are presented. One of the transitions is tuned to exact resonance with the pulse carrier frequency; the other is distanced by much more than the pulse spectral width, thus the adiabatic following approximation may be applied to it. The interaction between the pulse and the far-from-resonance transition is described by the wave equation with the nonlinear index of refraction in the form of the Lorentz function of the field amplitude. This wave equation is solved together with the Bloch equations for the exact resonant transition. The solution in the form of the stationary phase-modulated pulse is obtained, and (pi) -pulse of self-induced transparency is the special case of this solution. The obtained solution has the area under the pulse envelope less than (pi) , and with increasing the absorption coefficient of the far-from-resonance transition the pulse area decreases. The effect can be used for reducing the transparency threshold of the resonant medium below (pi) .

Propagation of vector solitons in a quasi-resonant medium with stark deformation of quantum states

С. В. Сазонов, N. V. Ustinov

The nonlinear dynamics of a vector two-component optical pulse propagating in quasi-resonance conditions in a medium of nonsymmetric quantum objects is investigated for Stark splitting of quantum energy levels by an external electric field. We consider the case when the ordinary component of the optical pulse induces σ transitions, while the extraordinary component induces the π transition and shifts the frequencies of the allowed transitions due to the dynamic Stark effect. It is found that under Zakharov-Benney resonance conditions, the propagation of the optical pulse is accompanied by generation of an electromagnetic pulse in the terahertz band and is described by the vector generalization of the nonlinear Yajima-Oikawa system. It is shown that this system (as well as its formal generalization with an arbitrary number of optical components) is integrable by the inverse scattering transformation method. The corresponding Darboux transformations are found for obtaining multisoliton solutions. The influence of transverse effects on the propagation of vector solitons is investigated. The conditions under which transverse dynamics leads to self-focusing (defocusing) of solitons are determined.
