Enhanced Quantum Correlations in Bound Higher-Order Solitons

Abstract

Quantum effects in N-bound solitons can be drastically enhanced compared to the fundamental soliton. In particular, the spectral photon-number correlations are much stronger. The formation of spectral domains of almost perfect positive and negative correlations is predicted. Criteria that are based on the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality are used for studying nonclassical correlations. Interferences between different soliton components of the N-bound solution being responsible for the strong changes in the coherent amplitude may also be a mechanism for the strong correlations. The results offer novel possibilities of producing light with highly nonclassical properties.

Nonclassical correlations in damped quantum solitons

Schmidt, E, Knöll, L, Welsch, D G

Using cumulant expansion in Gaussian approximation, the internal quantum statistics of damped soliton-like pulses in Kerr media are studied numerically, considering both narrow and finite bandwidth spectral pulse components. It is shown that the sub-Poissonian statistics can be enhanced, under certain circumstances, by absorption, which damps out some destructive interferences. Further, it is shown that both the photon-number correlation and the correlation of the photon-number variance between different pulse components can be highly nonclassical even for an absorbing fiber. Optimum frequency windows are determined in order to realize strong nonclassical behavior, which offers novel possibilities of using solitons in optical fibers as a source of nonclassically correlated light beams.

Nonclassical correlations in damped N-solitons

Eduard Schmidt, L. Knöll, Dirk‐Gunnar Welsch

The quantum statistics of damped higher-order optical solitons are analyzed numerically, using cumulant-expansion techniques in Gaussian approximation. A detailed analysis of nonclassical properties in both the time and the frequency domain is given, with special emphasis on the role of absorption. Highly nonclassical broadband spectral correlation is predicted.

Observation of Multimode Quantum Correlations in Fiber Optical Solitons

S. Spälter, Natalia Korolkova, Friedrich König +2 more

Quantum correlations of photon numbers in different spectral components of ultrashort optical solitons have been observed experimentally. These correlations are crucial for the understanding and characterization of the internal quantum structure of soliton pulses and contribute significantly to soliton squeezing by spectral filtering. The accessible information on the nonclassical state of the correlated spectral components is discussed with the example of two modes. The method may be generalized to obtain a complete quantum description of a multimode field.

Quantum correlations via vector soliton interactions

Andrey Ivanovich Konyukhov

Quantum correlations play a prominent role in numerous applications, from quantum communications and networking to enhanced sensing. I propose using optical soliton splitting and inelastic soliton collision to generate pulse pairs with highly correlated photon number fluctuations. The fluctuations are studied using the linearized quantum fluctuation theory of vector solitons. I show that the interpulse correlations arise in the process of inelastic soliton interactions initiated by the polarization mode dispersion and modulation of the fiber dispersion. The inelastic soliton interactions produce pulses with highly correlated quantum fluctuations in the orthogonal polarization components of the field. In the time domain, the pulses have a four-lobe correlation pattern. In the frequency domain, the correlation functions acquire a ``checkerboard'' structure with alternating positive and negative regions. Correlations between the separated pulses arise only with appropriate pulse width, group velocity dispersion, and polarization mode dispersion. The generation of pulses with high intrapulse correlations offers the possibility of producing entangled sources for continuous-variable quantum communication and computation.

Strongly correlated photons generated by coupling a three- or four-level system to a waveguide

Huaixiu Zheng, Daniel J. Gauthier, Harold U. Baranger

We study the generation of strongly correlated photons by coupling an atom to photonic quantum fields in a one-dimensional waveguide. Specifically, we consider a three-level or four-level system for the atom. Photon-photon bound states emerge as a manifestation of the strong photon-photon correlation mediated by the atom. Effective repulsive or attractive interaction between photons can be produced, causing either suppressed multiphoton transmission (photon blockade) or enhanced multiphoton transmission (photon-induced tunneling). As a result, nonclassical light sources can be generated on demand by sending coherent states into the proposed system. We calculate the second-order correlation function of the transmitted field and observe bunching and antibunching caused by the bound states. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the proposed system can produce photon pairs with a high degree of spectral entanglement, which have a large capacity for carrying information and are important for large-alphabet quantum communication.
